Sigma 768 March 26, 2014 Share March 26, 2014 Sparring is basically where you fight your opponent, but don't try to harm them for the sake of either training or just plain fun. My mother doesn't have the money for me to learn fencing or judo, so I often times spar with one of my friends as an alternative. Cuts and bruises are common, but that's just a price that has to be paid. Does anyone here do something similar? Acoustic Cloud 2,202 March 26, 2014 Share March 26, 2014 (edited) Well I was in Taekwondo (Useless unless you like to just walk and kick), then I took Karate for about 11 years, then about 2 years of formal Brazilian jujitsu training.SOOOOO do I like sparring? The answer is, I did. Not so much now. *The only sparring worth doing is without gear and just go open handed. It's safe, and more realistic. :/ Edited March 26, 2014 by Rainbow Dashey

MagicalStarRain 599 March 26, 2014 Share March 26, 2014 I'm a black belt in tae kwon do, so I do lots sparring. I've gotten punched in the jaw a couple times, but it's all fun. The downside is that we have to put on sparring gear and it's hard to put on by yourself. Click this dragon hatchling to help it grow, please! Courageous Thunder Dash 7,824 March 26, 2014 Share March 26, 2014 I'm a 3rd degree black belt and haven't sparred in forever. Would like to do a street sparring match with someone. The fun thing about street sparring is, it's basically MMA-style fighting. MagicalStarRain 599 March 26, 2014 Share March 26, 2014 The downside is putting on the protective gear, not getting punched in the jaw? Mainly because the gear is so tough to put on without sone assistance. I guess I worded it wrong or something. XD Click this dragon hatchling to help it grow, please! Khaoios 1,970 March 26, 2014 Share March 26, 2014 Yes, I used to spare a lot with my girlfriend. (problem is, she's Chinese and she learned a lot of things at a young age, while I am sort of a street fighter, so she always ends up winning, ) Besides that, I also love sparring in Fencing. Hm, sparing gear..sounds nice, though I do think that in order to be trained TRULY effectively you need to spar without gear at least every now and again just so if you ARE ever in a real fight with a really tough guy you wont be in total shock from the pain of a direct jaw hit, not saying it don't hurt getting hit with sparing gear, just trying to say that it's always good to experience the pain penalty of a real fight so you know what to fully expect. In no way hating, just giving you ideas on ways to improve yourself, as far as my experiences go we used to beat the crap outta each other in highschool, started out as innocent fun, then someone got a fist to the jaw and the fight was on. Evilshy 5,090 March 27, 2014 Share March 27, 2014 Used to spar a ton with my friends, wooden swords and shields and whatnot. We'd get cut up and bruised and such, but nothing too bad. I also used to fence, but I don't much like all the rigid, structured guidelines of real fencing. 1 Signature now 99% less edgy!

Chuckles4lyfe 441 March 27, 2014 Share March 27, 2014 I'm a 2nd Degree Black belt and practiced Tae-Kwon-Do for ~11 years. I was exposed to plenty of sparring during that time. Did I like it? Honestly, No. I hated sparring. Even though we were wearing protective gear, it was still easy to get hurt. The whole idea of martial arts is to learn self defense so that we don't have to spar and fight. Besides, MLP has taught us that the magic of friendship prevails over fighting any day . #Squadgoals "But that day...The day I discovered racing...I proved that the legends were true. I made the impossible happen!"—Dash "Friendship isn't always easy, but there's no doubt it's worth fighting for."— Twilight Sparkle
Frith is Magick 1,471 March 27, 2014 Share March 27, 2014 I love sparring. Not only is it an important part of training, it is also enjoyable. There are three main points I like about sparring: 1. It is a way to learn and practice different things in a setting where you do not only have one chance at full speed, you can refine and build your ability, which will pay off in the long run. 2. As you build in the technical aspect, you can push a little harder. This is where protective gear comes into play because you can go further and start to train the psychological side of combat (especially if you are going against someone with more experience) without risking serious injury (cuts and bruises are part of the fun, but you should only be hospitalizing people in a true fight). You also learn how to take a punch and keep going, those small bruises and scrapes will remove, or at least limit, the fear of pain, something that can be crippling in combat (to an extent, you want to avoid being hurt, but a fearful mindset will be a huge disadvantage) 3. Sparring with different people trains adaptability, but I find that when you spar with someone and have a chance to see their fighting style/preferences first-hand, you really learn quite a bit about that person. Casual sparring can turn into a fun mind game. Keep flyin'
Hive King 2,001 March 27, 2014 Share March 27, 2014 I use foam Nerf Swords and weapons. I usually go in with twin broadswords, my sister uses a mace and shield, and my cousin uses daggers. We do hand to hand too, but we're a bit more cautious ever since my cousin broke my wrist by catching my punch "Aren’t we the same? You know, aren’t you carrying the same mindset as I am? Just because you couldn’t bear to lose, you lost your precious partner! You really call yourself a true duelist? You’re the complete opposite of that!" -Weevil Underwood
