About the Female Fans of MLP...

I keep hearing all of this stuff about phrases like "brohoof" and "brony" are bad because they are geared toward guys but the only other example I see from the OP aside from something else I mentioned in my previous statement is a short clip from the brony documentary which talks about female fans. Where is the evidence that there is a concerted effort to push away female fans? You can make an argument that the labeling can be a bit much at times but there is a bit of a difference between too much labeling being a problem and implying that there is epidemic of sexism in the fandom especially with offering very little evidence supporting that claim.

Well said Kaydreamer! That is exactly how I feel! Earthbender, I think it's fine that there are phrases such as brony and brohoof (they rock!), but I guess sometimes I wish there was more of an effort to help females feel a bit more welcome in the fandom... sure, there's Pegasister, but as I've stated many times before that phrase just makes me cringe every time... if ya know what I mean. :/

It's 'cause people on Tumblr hate bronies because all they think we do is fap to horses.

This is true, I love tumblr people, i think they are the funniest bloggers in all the internet, i just go there to look and laugh....but they are very hostile to bronies, they see us all as sexual freaks about ponies

ADDING ON Also, I totally second PE Brony's suggestion of hoof-bump in place of brohoof. Especially since it's actually from the show! It's way more neutral, and why wouldn't we endeavour to be show-accurate?

Me number after two! (Cookie to whoever gets that reference)

It's gender neutral and it's canon.

And this despite the fact that clop is really more like a bonus for most cloppers instead of being the whole reason they are into the show and it is also a tad hypocritical considering how none of these people raise a fuss about all the Sonic and Pokemon R34 that has existed forever.

exactly, i personally cant figure out why people are into pokemon still, the pokemon are rediculous now they look like house appliances, and yet i have no urge to make fun of them for it or be volgar about it.

Woo! I love being accurate! I was inspired by this and other threads that I've come across to start a suggestion, just to raise awareness. I don't expect it to take hold too much, but it is worth the small effort it took to start it!

One of a possible reason i can think of is that girls/woman tend to be attention seeking, also known as "Attention Whores".

Another one is the fear of getting flooded with homoerotic fanworks (fanfiction, pictures...) since indeed many females have liking for this kind of stuff.

Guys who think that female fans like something for the attention (comic books, games, and MLP) are morons. Guys like that aren't worth trying to get attention from. Girls like what we like because we LIKE IT. Not because we're trying to get the attention of some conceited jerk.

And I've known many guys in this fandom that have fapped to/created drawings or fics of homoerotic ponies. It really isn't just the females, lol.

While I still use the lingo and happily call myself a brony, I do agree the fanbase has a double-standard that really ticks me off.

Personally, I wish we could just be past the stage where male fans need to address themselves as bronies and the like. Because while a show may be written for a particular demographic, there is no show that the other sex can't watch. Likewise, there is no sex that can't watch specific shows.

This may just come from my sheer hatred of gender roles in society, but I don't think there's a difference between bronies and pegasisters, and I don't think there should be terms to differentiate between them. Everyone's just an MLP fan. The end.

Probably said here quite a few times now but, most non-bronies see the show as a "girls show" so the thought of dudes watching it, makes everybody flip. So it is mostly because the guys are getting the most attention from others about it.

2011 Tumblr was a paradise for nerds and geeks like us where we could escape the judgement of the rest of net and have some peace and fun.

2014 Tumblr is almost as bad as 4Chan and only allows that privilege to fandoms like SuperWhoLock and Hannibal that they have their heads up the asses of.

I know it must be a shock for some, but people on tumblr or on some sites on the internet that have heard of bronies, are very hostile towards the fandom. Female fans are almost overlooked when liking the show, because they see that male fans liking the show comes off as a shock to them. But to me, males and females should be treated with respect.

Well, from my experience, instead of being pushed aside, pegasisters (or lady bronies, since some of them prefer being called bronies too) receive less attention because dudes liking a show with a fame for being for little girls get far more attention for being WAY too unexpected. Yeah, sure, there are assholes who shoos ladies in the fandom, but I haven's seen many cases of that

I'm probably the most mature in my group of friends so if anyone ever called me childish, I would be thinking "seriously? explain please." and I would ask them "what's wrong with being childish?". Anywho, I think, just like in any other case, girl bronies (pegasisters, whatever) are just as awesome as boys because if a boy likes a little girl's TV show, that's fine, but in the eyes of many, girls are "supposed to" grow out of these things and so if they are fine with watching it than others should be too.

Brony and brohoof can imply to both genders.

you can be a girl and be a brony.

But I mean Most of the fandom is male. So thats why its ''brohoof'' because ''bro we're totally watching mlp'' the usual girl would probably not refer to her fellow female friend as a bro, unless its inteded as a joke or sarcasm.

And I guess we were lucky that bro + pony = a very good smooth word.

Well people think it is more normal for a girl to like mlp at roughly your age and under, so that could maybe be why, but don't get me wrong , Anyone and everyone can like my little pony, but i do have to admit girls are under appreciated in the MLP fandom, if it weren't for girls, we wouldn't even be watching the show!

You don't see many girls in the fandom (that is another reason) either because when the hate is thrown out, it hits the 'unman like' males like me but will seem normal for girls because of the stereotype that every aspect of the show is for girls and girls only, but nonetheless both genders should be respected equally.

As for 'Pegasisters' I do feel that it sounds like a 5 second thought on the idea of the name, maybe the female population of the fandom should do a vote on how they feel on the name and whether or not you should change it :)

I keep hearing comments about us needing to do something to make female fans feel more welcome but the only suggestion I have seen is changing the "brohoof" button on this site to "hoofbump" which may have some good intentions behind it but still seems a bit patronizing to me. Why so much focus on gender when it dosen't even matter in the first place? One of the things I like about this fandom is that it is full of people that are willing to challenge these arbitrary, outdated gender roles and double standards and willing to like something that is considered not only bizarre but even deviant. I have already asked where the evidence is but this time I will ask a different question. Suppose it is true that female fans are second class citizens in this fandom, exactly what should be done to make them feel more welcome? I hear a lot of complaining in this thread but not many suggestions or solutions to solve the purported problem.

So people get mad over females watching a show where 90% of characters are female?

*mind blown*

I don't think there is any special things to be done, we will always have people lacking logic. (They are everwhere)

Btw hoofbumb does not sound good, it gives me strange pictures. (Admit it you got them too!)

So...men start watching a show for little girls and end up alienating women who watch the show.

img-1665762-1-190176__safe_applejack_ima

I strive to be inclusive.  I view the word "brony" as slang and not necessarily gender specific (though it was originally intended to be).  The fandom as a whole seems to be like this.

According to the newest census of our fandom, the girl population has gone up a lot! While still dominated by boys, it's not as big of a gap anymore.

I'mma girl, so yay! /) I prefer to call myself a brony, because that is the only term I knew of for a while, and I got used to calling myself that. Then I heard of 'pegasister' and was just like... nope. It has too many syllables and sounds rather stupid. No offense to those who like the name though! ;)

I've never gotten any flames for being a girl who likes the show and identifies as a brony. I also understand, yeah, I'm closer to the demographic, so it's not that big of a deal that I like it. But I take part in the fandom, I know this show inside and out, and if ever any guy did challenge my right to like the show and be a part of the fandom, I'd bet him ten bucks that I know more about the show and fandom than he does. :comeatus:

Anyway, my true point is, I don't think most people really care whether you're a boy or girl in the fandom. We may be rather lopsided when it comes to gender, but girls are a part of the fandom as well. Just be prepared to take criticism if you happen to meet some random idiot who thinks only boys can be bronys. :muffins:

Aha...so they want to change Brohoof into Hoof-bump(corrected!)...

Well, what comes next then? Maybe changing the term Brony into something completely 'gender-neutral'...

@@Commissar Alexer, where in the world did you pull "brobump" from? If you paid attention, it says "hoof-bump." I was the one that made the suggestion since it is show-accurate and was a plausible solution for them. Honestly, I'd prefer to change it out of accuracy, rather than gender, but it doesn't hurt their situation. I was simply supplying something to help them.

There IS a gender-neutral term already...it's called "fan." But that's boring. Plus, most of the girls I've seen comment have preferred "brony" anyway.

I couldn't care less if people call themselves "Bronies". I actually always thought it was kind of a cool name for male MLP fans, I just don't think that I or anybody else (male or female) should feel they have to be lumped into under the label. So, no, I don't wish to change it to a gender-neutral term. Just don't try to tell me I'm a 'Brony', and I'm fine.

'Brohoof', is different. Because I have to click "brohoof" to 'like' anybody's post.
