How come bronys are like this

It's sad but to be honest it's not just the brony communtiy. I'm big into anime, comic, and gaming culture as well and I see it. I see it when I go to the gym and I see it walking down the street. The world is depressed. Sorry I don't have have much to build on from there it's a sad truth all I can say is wake up everyday and look for one thing to make you smile and tenrubito get one person else to smile. I can say it helps.

People who are sad and depressed tend to get a lot of attention, someone who says something like "I had a great day, I ate my favorite meal, I got a raise at work and I found out my crush feels the same way" they tend to get less attention than someone who says something like "my life sucks, what is the point of even living anymore I might as well put a bullet in my head." That is not to say that there aren't a significant amount of bronies that are going through tough times as the economy kind of sucks right now it is putting alot of people through more pressure than they might otherwise be put under with jobs being scarce and the cost of living continuing to go up while the average person is getting screwed over harder and harder.

Fandoms in general tend to attract a lot of people who are socially awkward and as someone who has struggled with this I can say firsthand that being rejected and judged by so many people for such stupid reasons can be humiliating and soul crushing. The only reason why I advanced to the point where I don't give a damn what people think is because I went through years of hell trying to fit in and learned that there is a lot less pain and humiliation if I just say to hell with it and be myself regardless of what a bunch of shallow pricks think but a lot bronies and people in general haven't learned this lesson yet which is why a lot of bronies tend to get defensive with haters and trolls instead of ignoring them.

And I think this fandom attracts a lot of people that want something more positive in their lives, I suspect that many of these people are on a subconscious level more likely to give MLP a chance because they can sense that. To make a long story short there are a lot of reasons why bronies or anyone for that matter is or can be depressed, trust me I have been through depression many times in my life and am struggling with it now and each time I had it there were different things that triggered it.

This guy said it all. Everyone keeps saying, "oh keep your head up, look at the bright side," etc...and yet, doing the exact opposite, gets attention.

I don't think it has anything to do with this fandom. It more likely has to do with the average age of the members of this forum, which I believe is somewhere in the teens.

When I was in my teens I was also very melodramatic. For some reason I almost enjoyed it... Yet there was nothing there, I had a pretty good life. Not a perfect one, but a pretty good one.

I try to stay away from teenagers being depressing for no reason, because it makes me sick. Some teenagers have real reasons to complain, but for those who do not, it literally makes me sick to read such words when they have such a good life.

For me (yeah, using myself as an example) it showed me a couple of important moral values and its so much nicer being nice, especially on these forums (:
For my friend, he was under a lot of stress and when I recommended this to him, he definitely seems to smile more :P

It basically has a positive experience on so many peoples lives, thats why the fandom is so huge (:

I don't know,I guess the show attracts lots of people of that type. It's really saddening sometimes to see members act happy one day, then suicidal the next.Sometimes I want them to take that stuff and leave the forums alone from that stuff (cruel I know).

The show really cheered me up a lot. The fundamentals of a good life lesson and just the large amount of good vibe coming threw the show seemed to help adjust my outlook. I know it seems silly but just a month ago before a friend got me to watch it I was a very angry person. (I don't get sad when depressed I get mean angry and even a little violent) And now I'm I seem to be in a much happier mood. When I start to fill down or angry I'll watch an episode and then go beat some.big bad bosses in Dark souls 2 seems to cheer me right up.

I feel like in general people are depressed. Bronies are, judging from the huge amount of disdain, the most hated fandom on the internet. Ponies do make life more happy. To me, it makes sense that depressed people would be attracted to such a happy show.

It looks like some good points have already been made in this thread.  I'll add a quick theory.  I think a show like MLP tends to attract people who maybe don't fit in well in society, are socially awkward, have trouble making friends, etc.  I don't really know, but I'd wager that the stereotypical "average" guy that just watches football and stuff probably fits in better and doesn't feel so lonely.  I'm lonely and depressed as well, and that's part of what draws me to the show.  It gives me a little happiness and a little hope.  I wish life could be like MLP.  I think troubled people and deep thinkers tend to be attracted to something like this.  Just my theory.

I'm not a teenager but I suffer from some very severe depression and anxiety. It's bad enough that in the last few years I have difficulty leaving my house.

The ponies really do help cheer me up. Most TV shows and movies I watch are very cynical in outlook, so it's refreshing to have a show that is sincere and upbeat but that is also high quality.

EBP provides a good base to get some ideas. Depression stems from a variety of different reasons. However, it also depends on how bad your state of depression might be.  it might be for the moment mood, or possibly long term (which is worst and problematic).  But it will vary greatly between people and as EBP and others have said, Fandoms attract people for something a bit more positive in their lives (as one of the potential reasons for it).

well i have a theory but its too long and I dont want to type it out....but in short I dont think its a brony thing I used to be that way and I got better, but that was because I was younger.  This is a young audience most of which are just beginning to explore themselves and thats a tough spot, plus generational factors such as one parent homes tend to be coorelated with distressed emotional development but that does not mean causation, other unknown factors can play a role...but these are just my own ideas

Depression can't be tied to one's living situation, for some reason. Though I will say this: sometimes people just need a slap in the face to make them realize what they're taking for granted.

The show probably attracts people who are lonely, because they see a show about how great it is to have friends, and a part of them feels emotionally connected to it because of their desire to make friends of their own, I guess. But because of issues making friends like social anxiety, they're alone. If anything, the amount of joy in in the series may be making those bronies even more sad for that reason, they envy the happiness of the characters. I'll say this, during a dark part of my life, the song Smile Smile Smile made me sad, because of how joyous it was, and how terrible my life was and that I saw no escape, believing I'd never attain that happiness. Nowadays, it brings me joy :D.

That's kind of a gross oversimplification. I suffer from some pretty major depression, and while I know that I'm being irrational and my life isn't that bad, the chemicals in my brain will still try to color everything with a glass half empty view.

If anything, that kind of statement would just make me more depressed because I'll then feel selfish and horrible.

So the moral of this story is that pharmaceuticals are your friends.

It would be interesting to hear your theory. Even if its one or two quick examples for a concept.

Yes it is an oversimplification, but I try my best to not be long-winded and do a huge post.

I'm no expert on depression, I've never been in a deep bout of it before. Yes, I've been depressed before, but never chronically.

To say my statement isn't valid in any way I think is also an oversimplification of the situation. Yes, depression is terrible and I don't know what it's like to be chronically depressed, but there are people who I've met who are depressed yet their situation was so much better than mine and when they'd talk about it with me I'd be understanding. But at the same time, I can't help but feel that the person has no reason to be depressed since their situation is so good. Now, is that wrong of me? Probably. But it doesn't help gain sympathy if your life is so much better than another person's yet you act all moody and sad around them all the time.

Once again, though, I repress those feelings because I'm no expert on depression. Literally anyone can be depressed for any reason, maybe even for no reason at all, or one that they can't explain. Doesn't matter if you're rich or poor or what gender or what race you are, you can be depressed and not be able to help it.

But by the same token, I can feel a sort of anger at a depressed person and I can't help that either, especially if my mind is telling me they have no reason to be depressed. It's the same principle, really. As humans, we get emotions we can't help and we do our best to battle them back.

And I assume your joking about that last bit about pharmaceuticals.

I'm not joking about the pharmaceuticals. They make my depression far more manageable. If I put off taking my meds for a few days, the effect is quite noticeable.

I'm not sure if I completely trust the pharmaceuticals. Sure, they help with certain depression problems, but some people build up a tolerance have to take more and more.

I know my mother used to be on drugs for her depression, but as soon as she quit using them she felt better, even if she was still depressed, and instead tried talking to people and being more open. It helped a lot.

Then again, that doesn't work for everyone, so I understand if that's not the route you can pursue.

Well I do build up a tolerance to them over time, but that just means I need to get them periodically adjusted.

And I can't claim to know your mother's situation, but if she was trying to depend on meds alone, it was kind of a given that they weren't helping. Meds just make things more manageable, they don't solve the problems on their own.
