Villains and a generation's fear

I think one of the good things (of MANY) in this finale was Discord's relationship with Tirek.

They are both villains from two totally different eras of thinking and it shows.

Tirek evokes a very satanic image; the horns, cloven hooves, red skin, corrupting good, imprisoned in Hell etc. This was typical of the time he was made. Look at his counterparts Mum-Ra or Skeletor. At the time, the big fear was what was classically related to death and the infernal or demonic.

Discord, inspired by Q, is more geared toward the existential horror that came with the new millennial resurgence of Lovecraftian themes and ideas. His hodgepodge appearance, inexplicable powers, and the unsettling atmosphere he creates all evoke something similar to Nyarlathotep.

Further hammering the contrast home is how they are introduced and what they do to their victims.

Tirek is introduced in a dark alleyway, obscured by shadow, and his true nature, cloaked. His first line is whispered insidiously, claiming a pony's magic and cutie-mark (perhaps symbolic of their soul?) as his own.

Discord is introduced by casually altering the dimensions of his environment, his antics almost playful. His speeches though, reveal dark and twisted truths to his audience, the break or make them question their very purpose of existence.

When the two team up, it's almost like a mythological crossover version of the Joker and Red Skull team up.

It was definitely a good team up, with discord's sense of humour and tirek's thirst for power it's definitely a sight worth seeing.

Still, this New-Gen Tirek had nothing to do with the old one. The original Tirek was worthy of being as ruthless as other villains you've mentioned, like Skeletor or Mumm-Ra.

And while Discord is more powerful, these villains rely on their intelligence and just their pure evil hearts. Discord barely possesses intelligence and he has too much pride, and overall, he is not evil. Just a jerk who likes to turn everything upside down.

G4 Tirek was certainly the most evil G4 villain, but not enough to be compared to the original.Even if Tirek looked satanic, that was not the first intention with the original, looks can be deceaving, G1 Tirek had also another satanic trait, his Rainbow of Darkness was used to corrupt everything, plants, animals and human beings. He wanted to corrupt the entire world, and that also meant OUR world, since the ponies and the humans were connected.

Tirek, along with most of G1 villains would be too dark for this generation, most either could have cut the heads of everyone or threw them into a volcano or trap them into another dimension. That's how a villain does it.

But I agree, villains interactions are always fun.

I don't like Discord at all. He's like the Vegeta of MLP(that fits Trixie better, but you get the point). He thinks he's hot shit, despite it being proven time and time again by him getting his ass kicked that he's not. It gets to the point that he's just a little brat with an ego complex. I can imagine Tirek rolling his eyes at him

BTW, as for evilness of MLP villains, Sombra takes the cake far and beyond, past G1 Tirek even

Sombra enslaved and entire kingdom...for lolz. Seriously, look at the flashback, the ponies are just circling the tower, he likely did it for his sick amusement. Not to mention that Sombra not only tried to kill Spike, he was licking his lips and about to eat him. Also, mind rape

Even more than G1 Tirek? The one who is basically Satan? Huh.

G1 Tirek's greatest threat was cutting off Spike's head. Sombra was going to impale Spike, then eat him

Impale? How? And how is this deduced? I mean, yeah, he was basically going to eat him (Rather weird, how does a herbivore eat a dragon...)

Tirek's most evil threat actually was basically spread the Rainbow of Darkness on the sky, which would expand and turn all the world into pure corruption, turning not only the ponies but us, humans, into monsters.

He's pointing a giant crystal spike at him, lol

I rate trying to murder and eat a child as higher than corruption. Also, Sombra did plenty of corruption on the fear end

I don't know if that was intended in the animation, I doubt that's what they were trying to pull off. That's a friendly kid's show after all.

And Tirek is no stranger to murdering, minor villains after him have done it in more cruel ways, there is no doubt Tirek is the most ruthless of the two. Hell, the way he takes the way of beheadng a baby dragon is incredible, he doesn't take as a big thing, he's just pissed off that Scorpan didn't get him a fourth pony on purpose so he threatens to behead his only friend in the cost of achieving his goal.

Also, voice acting. Sombra's voice actor didn't pull any of the epic lines that Victor Caroli pulled showing his amazing voice and narrating acting skills. His voice is bone-chilling, that can rank from being very quiet and evil, to nearly monstruous and hellish.

@@Darker,

Maybe so, but Sombra's very few lines were more due to lack of screen time. Even so, his presence was felt through the fear everyone had of him.

Also, Tirek's lines could be quite hammy

"THE POWER IS MINE!"

Yeah, an intention to do the same as Sauron, and failed quite miserably as we just saw a bunch of ponies that feared him.

Also, "THE POWER IS MINE" is basic and awesome 80s cheessiness.

I thought Sombra was better than Sauron if only because Sauron looked more like a thug than an ultimate evil. Not really regal

Neither the animated movies or the Peter Jackson ones represent the true evil of Sauron well. You need to read the books to see how much of an evil dark lord he is.

Darth Vader is great, Sauron is like a much better and more powerful version of Darth Vader.

Considering that in the books, Gollum looks like a salamander...
