How does Spike's fire work?

As far as it being able to send letters? I saw a theory that it sending letters was actually because of an enchanted wax seal that sends the letter to whomever's cutie mark is stamped onto it, but what's your theory? how does Spike receive letters?

I remember seeing Faust say somewhere that all of the ponies - yes, even the Earth ponies - have a bit of magic in them (just not as much as the Unicorns, because Unicorn master race), so I'm sure Spike has a bit of magic in him as well :D

Or, an alternative, Twilight and Celestia cast a spell on each letter before sending it in order to make it send through him :D

Or, his fire breath is a form of magic rather than actual fire :D

Yeah, ghostie, that thing about all ponies having magic within them was actually stated canonically in the season 4 finale! :D

Another possibility is that dragons actually have a magical ability to do that. Since Spike is the only really friendly dragon that we've seen, it's possible that all dragons can send things to places using their fire, or maybe some dragons have that ability, just like some ponies have the ability to fly or some have the ability to use magic.

My guess is that Spike is from a family/species of dragons that can use a green fire, able to teleport things like letters.

Maybe he decides when he wants to use different fire breathe? I don't know? :P

I think it's the case. Is his fire breathe orange here?:

If it's orange, then yes. :)

@@Blobulle, nice find!

I didn't realize that his breath was orange in that scene. Maybe his breath color really does determine the "function" of what he's about to do. I'm not sure. I'll have to go back and rewatch scenes where he lit up things to see if that holds water.

My theory is that he has two extra organs.... A gas bladder and a magical reception organ.... The gas bladder super heats the gas and sends it to his mouth, and mixes with magic from the magical reception organ, and voila...... Fire that can send letters!!

Spike can use green fire to send letters, which is part of his magic. He also has the standard red fire, which would take a little bit more energy to use.

Headcanon: Spike uses magic green fire to send things or light small fires. It takes more energy, but Spike can breathe orange fire that is much more powerful, yet has no magic in it.

Question is, did Spike obtain the ability to breathe the green fire after Twilight used magic to open his egg? It could make for some interesting head canon.

I agree though. Spike can control what type of fire he breathes, whether it is used for sending letters (green) or melting ice (orange).

@@LED Dasher,

I think that all dragons were hatched by magic at the school. Maybe Celestia kept Spike's egg as a special one for Twilight.

That doesn't explain why there are wild dragons in Equestria. They obviously haven't been hatched by unicorn magic. Spike's egg may have been a random one that was picked up.

I don't know about that. Spike does have a little magic with that green fire so maybe when Twilight's magic went overload, it probably carried some other stuff with it.

Well, I seem to remember when he got the hiccups his fire sent all the letters to celestia, and when he accedently burnt that book in owls well that ends well, if I remember it was green, and as far as we know it only burnt it. So there must be something special about the letters that makes it so only they get sent and not said book.

Oh, and I noticed I this picture, it looks like the fire might start green then turn orange. Edited by Kaymenblooblood

Well you can't breathe fire unless you're magical.

Maybe Spike thinks about who the letter gets sent to, and Celestia casts a spell to send her letters to Spike's gastrointestinal tract. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Why doesn't Celestia teach Twilight how to send her letters with a simple spell?" Celestia's spell probably doesn't work unless a dragon is involved.

What about when he hiccups? He sends all those letters to celestia, I think he can only send to her, that's the most logical conclusion.

Yeah, that could make sense, and it seems his letter sending fire can activate any time he has a letter in hand after reviewing the clip

(Btw thanks for the video)

Spike can totally burn stuff with his green fire:

Also there are plenty of instances of him leaving his friends' faces sooty after spewing forth green fire on them. It may simply be that his flame can teleport scrolls and bring them back into existence.

Or perhaps the scrolls themselves are magical and once burned by dragonfire they automatically teleport back to the location the magic was applied to them? (In this case, Celestia's chamber.)

If that's the case then because Twilight is an alicorn I see no reason why she couldn't imbue the scrolls the same way Celestia does and send messages back and forth to her friends using Spike, if she was busy with royal duties and such in her new castle, for example.

I sort of like that Spike was breathing orange fire when he saved the Crystal Empire from that huge ice ball, and that he breathes green fire when he sends letters to Celestia.

Spike has been the scribe/courier for Twilight to 4 seasons now...and yet it's only now that I started questioning how this works.

Did Spike learn this ability from ponies or was he born with it?

Can other dragon send letters in this matter?

If Spike learned this from ponies, how come this isn't the default form of communication in Equestria? Why bother with the Derpy mail system?!

Can other items been sent in this manner and what are the limitations?

Why haven't ponies figured out yet a way to make this into a mass-transportation spell?

How does Spike know if the letters goes to the right address?

How does Celestia send BACK the letters to Spike?

Can these letters can intercepted by one's enemies?

Why is it that Spike needs to burp out a receiving letter but Celestia doesn't?

Will burping up letters on the regular basis cause healthy complications in the long term?

...THESE QUESTIONS MUST ANSWERED!!

Hello, @windy_prance. There was already a topic in existence for discussing how Spike's fire and letter-sending abilities work, so I have merged yours into it.

Please make sure to search the forums before posting a new topic to ensure that it doesn't already exist.

Thanks.  :)
