The Royal Family (how are they related?)

So how sketchy is the royal family lineage?

 

You have the two royal sisters, Luna and Celestia,

 

and of course some really weird related relatives. 

 

How did Prince Blueblood ever get into this family?  Same with Princess Cadence - how is she Celestia and Luna's niece?

 

You know, considering that Celestia seems to not have married anypony, same with Luna (or is there some inglorious scandal being covered up somewhere in background of the royal family?)

Prince Blueblood is a great great etc. nephew of Celestia and Luna, so there must have been another royal family member, but not closely related.

Princess Cadence was taken in by Celestia and Luna, because she didn't have a family of her own. She was taken into the family as her niece, because not only was she royalty, but an orphan. Insert Momlestia! XD

Perhaps Blueblood is a descendant of the original unicorn royal family, from before the Unification?

Cadence was adopted as a niece (don't know how that works) into the Royal family, and maybe Prince Blueblood is the descendent of someone Celestia regarded to be "sisterly."

Cadance was adopted into the royal family?!  Oh apparently this was mentioned in the chapter book series Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell, okay, didn't know about that.  Guess that explains that mystery.  Probably Celestia could only get away with that after ... wait a minute, i'll come back to this in a second.

Oooh, I like this theory.  Totally forgot about the Unicorn Royal family from Hearth's warming eve.   Looking back, technically the unicorn tribe is the only tribe to have a monarchy dating that far back in their heritage.  Hmm the lineage of Princess Platinum (unnamed unicorn king) still continuing on post events of Hearth's warming eve.  Forgot to consider that lineage.  Wait, that means we might have multiple royal lineages in Equestria ??  Hmm this makes for an interesting mystery.

The titles of royality in MLP are just that, titles, theres no bloodlines and such connected with it.

I was meaning to get back to that.  Okay with Luna and Celestia, having lived for so long (1000+ years) - the question I should have brought up was, have Luna or Celestia ever produced any offspring?  And can they even produce offspring? Yes, from that stance if they haven't already had offspring that means we're still at generation I of this lineage - but having adopted Cadence as a niece, means it's a very small royal family, in that sense - one that has so far never had a succeeding bloodline and so we're stuck at generation I. 

 

 

Prince Blueblood has always been just in the "great" greatly far removed section due to executive meddling.  Though I like Questioning Dragon's theory that he might be from Princess Platinum's bloodline lineage, that family lineage still on-going etc.  Probably not as powerful than its former predecessors but now mostly part of the Canterlot elite.

Princes and Princess can be appointed.  In fact, the comics have confirmed that Celestia and Luna were granted their royal titles.  Sombra assumed the title of King because that's just how he rolls.  Cadence is a Princess via adoption, and Twilight was appointed a Princess (obviously).  Shining Armor is a Prince by marriage.  So only Blueblood and Chrysalis inherited their royal titles.

I'm kind of now very sketchy to accept the comics as part of canon since I've started to doubt a few things about it.  It's nice as a side-off, somewhat difficult to fully take in part as show canon, so for now I'd like to stick to show canon.   I haven't gotten that far in the comics (will have to order my copy later, would be fun to read in for myself.

True, they haven't said that Luna and Tia didn't have other siblings, but if they did where the heck have they been hiding for this whole series?  If said siblings exist and show up, then it will come off a bit irritating since, I figured some previous episodes would have deemed another sibling presence (it will feel just like the same situation with Twilight's brother appearing out of nowhere by end of S2, besides obvious marketing).  More shoehorning in the future? Can't say I don't expect it.

 

 

Don't know about King Sombra and how he got that, apparently Forlong references the comics as him, just self-appointing himself like that because he's bad flank and all.   Hmm wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.  Never really properly got his full origin story out of S3.
