Canadian researchers have confirmed what most people suspected all along: that internet trolls are archetypal Machiavellian sadists.

In a survey conducted by the group of psychologists, people who partake in so-called trolling online showed signs of sadism, psychopathy, and were Machiavellian in their manipulation of others and their disregard for morality.

The researchers defined online trolling as “the practice of behaving in a deceptive, destructive, or disruptive manner in a social setting on the Internet” for no purpose other than their pleasure.

This relates to instances I have been victim of. Playing Pirates, Vikings, and Knights where people can troll without consequence people attack me specifically because whenever I complain about someone's attitude, they instantly hype this up to points where I can't play the game anymore. Do you agree with this study?

No i haven't been trolled because (probably) am an Arabic so the troll must think that messing with me will result in his death irl or something like that

on console gaming the most trolls are on xbox not on PlayStation ones

This doesn't surprise me in the least. Although I wouldn't say it applies to all trolls, just the more malicious ones. Some people only troll in small, harmless ways and stop when it's evident that others are being offended or irritated.

But as for people who pride themselves on the ability to piss off anyone and everyone for the sake of sheer enjoyment? Yeah, sadistic seems like about the right word.

The question isn't "Have you been trolled."

Oh, this again. I'll just leave this here as it's congruent with my take on this certain subject.

(Btw, I don't like how black and white your polls are. I think you should add more options. ;) )

No way, people who deliberately antagonize people in order to gain an emotional response are often sadistic?

To just put my overall feelings on this study out there, this seems like a moot point. Why did they spend resources telling us that those who enjoy seeing the emotional distress of others are often sadists?

Well, if you have anymore options then tell me. I thought there were only two options, yes or no. If you want to give a reason, go ahead.

EDIT: One point I disagree with the video is relating trolling to boredom and the development of our society rather than sadism. A better point would be we are being born into a sadistic society.

What is your point? I couldn't determine if this was sarcasm or if it had a point.

To be fare ignore them or move to a different server or something

If you follow that logic all the way, trolls merely move onto these different servers.

sadist is someone who obtains pleasure from inflicting pain on others.

If trolling is all about invoking a negative emotional response from someone, which is pretty much inflicting emotional pain on another person then it is classified, technically, under sadism.

Meh where do they live and where i live? Look at the distance, i play on European servers and most trolls are on west us or east us servers so the connection is a big deal

I was playing on a British server, when I last checked.

The point was, is that by and large this study really only proves something that most mainstream physiologists had been speculating, and proving for quite some time now. So the study seems more of a proving of the obvious, than a break through. Basic psychology already dictates that most people who cause emotional distress on others, and gain pleasure from it would be sadists. So really, unless they are trying to change how we define the word troll in the context of the internet, this study feels rather "a day late, and a dollar short".

My point was about trolling, not about the article. I know about other studies.

Well, by definition alone, if they are gaining pleasure from the emotional or physical pain they are causing, then they would be sadists. My point is that I agree, and that really no study like that was needed, as the definition of sadism alone accounts for most validation of the theory.

Not everyone defines 'practical joke' as something equal to inflicting unbalanced pain or discomfort to others.

If a 'practical joke' inflicts emotional pain on someone it is sadism. There isn't anything other than that.

I do not agree with that statement. Of course, some trolls show behaviour that can be related to things like sadism or psychopathy but there are "trolls" out there who "troll" to make others laugh, the victim included. It really depends on what kind of troll it is. If the objective is to really get somebody mad/annoyed/angry/whatever, I would agree, but then again most trolls I know are doing it to make people laugh and intend no harm at all.

I troll people all the time in CoD:Black Ops 2. Either because they're doing badly, or they're a camping pansy,or even both.

I play hardcore only(TDM usually),and when I see a teammate camping and using betties.I'll kill myself with it.Though, usually after they died, they go back to the same spot, and place yet another betty...so I kill myself with it.They do it again.and I just stand in front of them....sometimes they kill me and get booted, other times not. These are usually the people with 4 kills to 8 or 9 deaths.I've played hardcore long enough,to know to NOT use placeable equipment on the map...because teammates intentionally destroy it and/or will get you kicked for it.Claymores are okay though, because it just comes up as committing suicide vs getting a teamkill.Even placeable /in map killstreaks like a sentry gun, or Dragonfire....even a hunter killer..teammates will EMP that stuff. Or they'll kill you to get your care package you worked for. There's trolls allover in CoD.

But that's a video game...I'm not gonna repeat actions I do in a video game in real life...I'm not some psychopath...lol.

Above is some data you need to assist in forming an opinion. Small population, huh?

I voted no. While I agree with some of the findings on demographics, and some SPD traits are likely.  I thought that a few of the respondent validation methodologies were flawed, and was a little unnerved at a definitive lack of co-morbidity outside of general sociopathy. That alone makes me feel that this paper yielded too narrow a finding. Some of it makes sense though.

@, That isn't trolling, that's strategy. :)

Also camping pissing me the f*ck of so I'm biased.

What about this? Is this sadism?

img-2920463-1-Qifc2Bw.gif

How is this related? Clearly no physical or emotional harm was inflicted(as seen on the teacher's faces).

Harm: physical injury, especially that which is deliberately inflicted.

Injury:  the damage to a biological organism caused by physical harm.[1] Major trauma is injury that can potentially lead to serious outcomes.

I consider people who do that assholes, to be honest. Just because someone isn't good at a game doesn't mean it gives you permission to do such a thing.

Whether it is a video game doesn't make it any different. The act of getting a high off of someone's distress is sadism.
