Cant a girl game in peace? [Rant]

I know this isn't a problem which is going away any time soon, but it seems the online gaming world is so backwards compared to how things are progressing in the real world.

Every game I join where the issue of gender comes up, or if someone refers to me as he in the game, I will say, I am a she, and thats as far as I go, no big deal, I am there to game not to get some potential date or some crap. But people respond in one of these ways:

  1. The most common, call you a liar, a sl**, wh*** or various other insults.
  2. Demand you provide proof of yourself being a girl i.e pictures, voice clip etc. What the actual F? Guys are never demanded to do this, imagine a time where guys are forced to give pictures to strangers to prove gender.
  3. Try and flirt with you or act overly white knightish, I.E constantly helping you because of your gender, giving you things over the game, no respect for privacy.
  4. In the rare case, some people are normal about it and just carry on.

It's so bloody frustrating I love gaming, I am not a good gamer or a hardcore gamer, a casual at best, but what is with this BS? : /

because a girl that games is still a rare occurance and due to populair media we have been made to believe that it isn't something that actually happens.

All right @, I think that the dichotomy of this particular instance is due to the same reason people seem to be uncaring jerks on the internet. They feel that it is a safe and easy place to let out their darkest feelings and desires without any chance for consequence. It's about power for them, rather than misogyny. You have this affront first hand, being female, but gamers will also bully others based on the way their voice sounds, their game play, and everything else. The same types are the ones that post derogatory comments on pony videos on youtube, spending precious time of their day insulting others rather than being productive in their own lives. In a world where they feel powerless, bullying women for playing video games, other men for liking a show with strong female leads, gives them the sense of power that they have yet to acquire in their own lives.

I know it's frustrating, but in a way, it could be a lot worse. You could be them and feel the loneliness and emptiness inside that prompts them to such actions in the first place.

Pfft, just start putting those losers on a blacklist, yo. :v
There are millions of people you can end up in games with, blocking a few jerks isn't going to cripple your ability to find matches.

Yeah trust me my block lists are full to the brim, but it's like, the point im getting at, sometimes you come in home and you feel like crap, you want to chill out and game, first game you get in there is some 14 year old saying ''GET IN THE KITCHEN B1TCH'' or some other trash, gets really wearing x3

Well, the child obviously just wants and sandwich, so if ignoring them is too much to ask, perhaps a retort about how sad he must be, being neglected by his own mother to the point he is demanding strangers on the internet cook for him. D:

@@Riganthor,

It really is not a rare occurrence whatsoever. Even if that was it gives no right for those things to happen.

@@PiratePony,

cause girls can't game, bruh.

I'm living proof that you're wrong :P

But I'm in a way in luck because I'm biologically male... I don't get bothered by those people. But it's still not completely lucky, of course.

Oh: I was completely being facetious. I don't believe that one bit.

For the long winded real reaction see the paragraph above.

Its not so much a gender issue, as it is a "internet Anonymity" issue... Trolls thrive on the internet because no one knows who they are. This gives shelter to their behavior. Just remember that they are wanting a reaction, so the best thing you can do is just ignore it.

People online are assholes. Its pretty much how it goes. it doesn't help that there is currently a struggle between PC culture trying to ensure that freedom of speech is limited, and people are fighting back against it. Unfortunately this is the fate of things at the moment because of people like Anita Sarkeesian's starting needless controversy, and then finding out that Kotaku and other journalists of video games have been involved in scandalous activity. The internet was a ticking time bomb, and the fuse was finally set. Now we have to carve through the mess just to get anything moving forward. It's really sad to see things turn this way. This being said, I will state once more, Remember back when you could hate anybody and everybody on the internet for no reason, and that was ok? Back when nobody really gave a damn about the trolls, because we weren't to blind to see that they were being assholes for the sake of being an asshole. Now people treat it like some organized mob of hatred, when in reality its what it was back then. Assholes being assholes. Its just that people take it to personally now.

No girls can ever game in peace in online games, especially not in MMORPGs. I know this just from playing Minecraft online. It was rather cringy seeing all the guys giving all those gifts to those who said they were female or had a skin that was a female one.

But yeah, welcoming to the online gaming world. Unfortunately nothing can be done to change that since being online works in peoples favor considering they have an anonymous status there. Best you can do is report people for harassment if your game allows that.

I THOUGHT YOU WERE A DUDE LMAO

Anyways, I've personally never experienced this since I avoid showing my gender completely when playing games. I think it's just better that way, honestly. I've seen it happen to other people though, and it's not pretty. I just wish everyone were truly treated equally, you know?

Was there any need to say this and full caps lock it?

I think avoiding show gender only widens the gap to be honest, guys can be happy being guys online, so girls should be happy doing it too.

I understand your frustration about all of this, honestly it's why I stopped using voice chat in a lot of online games because that usually was what got me the worst of  it.  I used to just not share my gender at all because it just made things easier and I wouldn't have to expect any differences in behavior because of it. In Real Life, most of my friends are guys and we'd play games together and we just treated each other about the same.

Online though, I've found people will be jerks just to be jerks because they don't have to look at the person they're yelling at.  There's a dissonance to it that's honestly quite concerning.  A lot of the conflicts that go on about games that just so happen to involve women, makes things even more difficult for us because we are expected to take some sort of side or take a stance and then get labelled as something even if we don't agree with it. It's just a big cluster of complications at the moment.

From one gamer to another, I guess all I can say is, I understand how you feel, if you ever need to vent your frustrations you can PM me here.

This is why I use Discord or Skype, there's to many dickheads in the in-game chat. There's that one girl who wants to be a team player and she's getting bombarded with "show your tits", "go make me a sandwich slut", etc. Saddens me really how most male gamers are hungry for that p**** but don't even know how to take a girl out to dinner, pathetic.
