Try to back up it in multiple smaller parts as some parts may be corrupted which is why it gets stuck

It is possibly getting stuck because of a corrupted sector, the drive software keeps retrying, hence it appears to have stopped doing anything. I had this with a HDD years ago, I was able to identify bad sectors (or clusters) and mark them as used (recorded on), which prevented the computer trying to write files there.
