The more I'm thinking about The Best Gift Ever, the more I dislike it.
-
Comment on the AJ/FS sideplot:
SpoilerThe Flim & Flam side plot is an utter waste of time.
- Fluttershy becomes out of character, devolving into one of the most gullible customers in Rainbow Falls.
- How they resolve it is forced. They force-act their way to out them, and everyone buys into it.
-
The moral of how one shouldn't get sucked into the commercialized greed of the holidays is standard, but handles it really plainly here. Other longtime specials, including How the Grinch Stole Christmas and A Charlie Brown Christmas, commented on the commercialization of Christmas decades ago with pristine execution
And though I won't dock points for this, but it's kinda rich to have FIM parody commercialized greed when Hasbro spent a paltry $6.5 million for the FIM movie (which was internationally released). I don't know if Hasbro/Allspark's treatment of their animators was similar to Nitrogen Studios when Sausage Party was being developed, but given the notorious labor nature of animation in Canada, I won't be shocked if it's the same here.

So…
SpoilerSpike decided to make a personal gift for Rarity by decorating an umbrella, as she appreciates the hard effort placed into something as much as the execution. Gotta admit, that's actually pretty touching.

Okay…
SpoilerI have a big problem with Dash and Discord plucking that winterchilla from the wild.

Spoiler
Rainbow Dash: I find her "I'm awesome!" attitude annoying/off-putting.
Funny thing, I think the Equestria Girls version is a lot more down to Earth than her pony counterpart.
Discord:
- In my opinion, Discord stopped being interesting after his first appearance in TROH 1 & 2.
- I usually find reference humor funny/clever but I don't like when Discord uses it for some reason.

27+ minutes into Best Gift Ever. As of now, here are my order of subarcs from favorite to least:
Spoiler- Pinkie: My early comments were way too harsh and nitpicky. It's been really good. Even Rutherford had a nice moment. Also the best PP characterization since the film.
- Twilight: Pure hilarity.
- Dash: She and Discord share great chemistry.
- Spike: Hit with the "idiot lovebird" shtick, and since disappeared. Better if he either went with what he had or had Rarity originally.
- Rarity: Lot of good stuff, but marred by the worst unfortunate implication since Hard to Say Anything.
- AJ/FS: Makes FS artificially gullible and stupid.

Spoiler
"Aurora" "Bori" "Alice"
*chuckle* Clever. And them living all the way north beyond Yakyakistan works for a couple of reasons.
- The resemblance of Santa and the reindeer living in the North Pole. They could've ripped off the Santa story, but chose its own path instead.
- Combine the three words, and you got "Aurora Borealis," a.k.a., the Northern Lights. They're some of the most beautiful spectacles you'll ever see, and you usually catch them in really cold winter weather. Also, pay close attention to the fur: greenish-blue, pink, and yellow. All three colors are typically found in the Northern Lights.

Shining Armor stepped in a big bucket of sassy in his teasing banter with Twilight.

Spoiler
And now Rarity's at Sweet Acorn Orchard. Pistachio nor his parents have any idea that AJ's hat was delivered there by accident, but Pistachio loves the gift so much that she's now in a dilemma: have him give it back or let him keep it. From the way they speak, they don't get many visitors or acquaintances, especially during the harsh winter, so I won't be surprised if Rarity stays true to her character and lets him keep it. Whether she tells them what truly happened or not I don't know yet.

Spoiler…
Seriously, FS, you fell for Flim & Flam's easy scheme? At least with Rarity, she got really sucked into the teachings and was absorbed into her disguise.

Spoiler
How did she not recognize Flim and Flam immediately?
Their voices alone are so recognizable, and even those costumes weren't that good (I guess @Lambdadelta's reply explains it in a way)...

@Frostgage Speaking of David Price, he's the first to ever beat two former Cy Young winners to clinch consecutive playoff series. Each time on short rest! How about that!

Best Gift Ever spoiler below! Beware the Angry Buffalo!
SpoilerJust finished the mail scene.
*takes off earphones* WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO DERPY?!
Derpy's characterization is some of the worst in the entire series. Like Allspark doesn't have a clue what she's like. She isn't just stupid and incompetent, but because of her slow, ditzy-ish voice, horrific short-term memory, and lazy eyes, she comes across as mentally handicapped in a stereotypical form. Many complained about Derpy in Roundup (and I especially did following the edit); this scene reinforces these implications far more than either of those. What the hell happened to her personality from Slice of Life?! There, she made an absentminded mistake, but was very alert about it, wanted to fix it, and showed that she was smart and competent. Here, she's a completely new character.
NOTHING about this scene was funny at all! It lasted way too long, relied on painful cringe comedy, and bastardized her character in a very ableist fashion. It deserves to go back to the drawing board to fix it or scrap it for something more tasteful. If this were part of S8, this offensive scene would be the worst moment by far.
I'm gonna stop watching it for tonight before I get any angrier.
-
Okay, the chemistry between Rutherford and Pinkie's really funny.
QuotePinkie: *literally zips mouth shut*
LMAO! XD
Best scene so far. Easily.
-
The first 12 minutes stunk. It was slow and made some characters (particularly Spike, Dash, and PP) look dumb.
Now FS and AJ are at Rainbow Falls. FS's exposition to begin the scene was really out of place, but other than that, okay. Oh, hi, Flim & Flam! Ready for another quick scheme after screwing those at FU?
-
Annnnnd despite trading his Dash card w/ FS's Rarity card, he still has no idea what to get her.
*chortle* Maybe he should've stayed with the Dash one instead.
-
Back to BGE!
Discord's intro's really funny, and throwing away that candle works really well for him.
"I may not be invited"?
-
Now ten minutes in, and in the confusion, Spike suddenly agreed to trade cards with Fluttershy.
-
It woulda been really nice having him get something for Rainbow! It's something different at least!
But to be honest, if it didn't happen, he wouldn've gotten his own song in the end, so we got something outta it! But hey, next season will come, Sparity will be a thing in the past! They can remain the best of friends still, but getting rid of the childhood crush is all about growing up!

Also, Pinkie doesn't have to just give to Twilight. She can give it to everyone if she has them. She's making it too hard on herself.
Annnnnnnnnnd she's heading to Yakyakistan.
Mm-hmm.

And Spike's upset that he doesn't have Rarity.

It's been eight seasons! Get over it already!!!

AJ: "Traditional holiday meltdown?"
Just like all of us, I presume.
-
First song over! Not a bad beginning. Plenty of nice sight/cartoon gags to go with the lyrics.

Twi, a protip: start completing your Christmas checklist when corporations begin selling for the holidays: the beginning of September.
That way, you won't be stressed as heck.
