I find it impossible to deny friend requests from people. I mean, unless I have a highly negative opinion, which doesn't exist for anyone, why say no?

  Go to your profile settings and uncheck the appropriate box under the Friends heading; there are only two options there. I thought that was unchecked by default. Guess not.
