Fox news.

Several years ago, during the zenith of our fandom, several people noticed us and wanted to take us down. Movements such as the antibrony brotherhood worked hard to witch hunt us and put us on a public bad light. Not only them, but the extensive furry fandom did it share on exposing us on said bad light as well.

They systematically witch hunted us publicly on social media and several sites and forums. This caught fox news attention, and then fox news did what fox news does the best; they made ill spirited reports and compared us to babymen and pedophiles as much as they could, and sometimes they used the bad apples as flag members of the fandom.

At first they just ridiculed us

And they filed us as babymen. And they kept going on it sorting us with worse people xD

And as scandals kept poping up, our fandom kept getting a worse reputation. Things such as the animator pedo scandal

Or people like tooncritic helped reinforce that misperception.
