G-1 is pretty adventure-y for the most part, and includes human characters and Spike. I liked it, and it was actually while looking for G-1 material for a G-1 parody that I learned about G-4!
G-2 is mostly slice-of-life, the ponies live in Ponyville, and there are few if any fantasy elements to it. Not really my cup of tea.
G-3 has adventure and slice-of-life in it, but is very preschool-ish and generally not up to G-4's storytelling standards.
