spoiler Making a Buckball variant for humans that can't fly or use magic

The way it was setup made it predictable, yes, but that doesn't mean they can't subvert our expectations from time to time. in "fall weather friends", they subverted our expectations by causing a mutual loss. Well Said. its a tough balance. But rainbow could have affirmed their performance with something like "wow, I couldn't have made half of those saves", which would have affirmed the hard work and skill without saying "the game doesn't matter, only fun matters."

spoiler Making a Buckball variant for humans that can't fly or use magic

I've had a few chances to playtest wacky sports and games, so it seems fun to try and create a variant that we could play in a local gym or field. Challenges: Stay as close to the show version of the game as possible to maintain the sport Fill in rules that were not explicitly stated in the episode Modify rules to turn the game from the flying 3D version to a running 2D version Provide appropriate offense/defense balance so that scoring is possible, but not easy. The most important thing to handle is preventing the Pegasus player from just camping the tiny basket with their body. The unicorn probably needs the freedom to move back and forth across the field to change the angles. Field: Hands and Feet: Game Start: Game End: Honestly, it could just be a lost cause! But i hope I'm wrong, and your creativity could provide the key to unlocking the sport. The bucket player basically fills the role of a cherry-picker in ultimate frisbee, the game doesn't seem terribly multidimensional. However, it has one very important things that ultimate doesn't: it's based on MLP, and the flavor of the game could make it fun for a small number of iterations. -
Would you guys have been fine if they had lost? I certainly would have. The mane 6 don't always have to win. It could have been amazing to deal with the consequences of a loss. It could have still been an encouraging and interesting end. I'm pretty sure that fluttershy and pinkie wouldn't have been shunned by ponyville for losing a match!

No, your unicorn is on your team, on the other side of the field, catching the balls your strikers hit. yup. the problem is that, at low levels of competition, the natural ability is actually very important. but it seems that people don't understand that things are different once you get out of the little leagues.

Quiddich isn't a sport. its a plot device designed to glorify a single player, so harry can be a hero. the scoring system makes one position important, and invalidates all the hard work done by everyone else. Buckball at least gives importance to all the players. The buckball we saw was not actually that interesting though. The basket is too easy to defend when the unicorn doesn't move it. seems like it would be a far more interesting sport if the unicorn was moving the basket to give better angles to the strikers. There didn't seem to be a rule against that. Fortunately, it doesn't really matter if the game is good or not. The emotional aspect of competition and team work, and stress would have come through as long as the sport was as distractingly broken as quiddich.

emotionally, it hits the right buttons. I like that they talked about the game meaning different things to different people, and how stress messes things up.... but working hard actually does make you better at sports. and there's this cultural thing that some people just have natural talent, which is kinda bullshit. at any high level of sports, you find some people that may have started out naturally talented, but they had to work their butts off to turn that talent into polished skill. I also like that snails wouldn't let the pressure get to him...he wouldn't let the others define how he saw the game... But that was only because he was intellectually disengaged, which isn't a full win for me.

neat, glad you enjoyed it. there are a lot of good ones. I especially liked the big mac issues, and I consider them the best big mac characterization that we ever get. but as good as omnibus volume 1 is, I prefer the comics in the second volume. The pirate issue is one of my personal favorites, and "reflections" is extremely well regarded and in every debate about the best mlp comics ever. don't expect volume three to be better than volume 2! the comics in the second volume are generally above the average.

i barely drink, and I've had maybe 3-4 total sips of wine in my life, but the idea of drinking wine out of a cup makes me cringe for some reason! XD
-
sure. the intent of my statement was to give a sample rule that is healthy for some individuals, not to provide a generalized rule that is appropriate for everyone.

I'm honestly quite surprised by not only the number of people that don't drink, but also by the number of you that are vehemently against it. That's not a bad position to be in (I'm not disapproving, just surprised), but it makes me wonder about how you feel about moderation in other areas of your life. For instance, a black and white stance on something for which moderation is not harmful, could cause you to feel unnecessarily guilty about a similar thing, and you don't want to add guilt to yourself when you are already in the type of poor mental state that could already cause you to make mistakes. Imagine one day, you are feeling depressed, and someone pushes a beer on you. if you then drink that beer, and it makes you feel WORSE, maybe suddenly you are more open to abusing further drinks? it makes sense to me to have rules such as: i will not drink alone i will not drink when i'm feeling depressed I will limit myself to a single drink per day/social occasion HOWEVER! if you have family members who are addicted to something, it seems completely reasonable to me to draw the line in the sand and say "never", as some addiction factors are genetic, and a single drink is enough for some people. --- I guess i'll answer the question as well: One of the few times I drink are when I visit one of my favorite microbreweries, as these make some alcoholic drinks that I enjoy, but if they also brew their own root beer, i'm more likely to go for that. I generally don't enjoy the taste, and my limit is one. I once had 1.5 beers because my girlfriend didn't like the taste of the drink she got, so I finished hers, and I felt bad after that, so my tolerance is apparently pretty low. back when I lived in Alaska, I participated in curling, and team captains often bought drinks for their teams. those single flavored beers that I drank once a week during the seasons probably add up to almost 50% of my total lifetime alcohol over my 31 years! There was a period of my life, however, where I purposefully drank ZERO alcohol of any kind, in any company, because I was volunteering with people who were pre-disposed to addictive behavior, and it would have just been tragic for any of them to randomly see me drink. But given that I cared so little about alcohol, this maybe caused me to refuse just three or so drinks.

so, in the opening, when opposite fluttershy went all sassafrass on discord, how much of that was her, and how much of that was discords spell? Once she snapped out of it, she was horrified...but at the same time, it was a completely logical reaction. Seems like maybe it lowered her inhibitions a bit?

heh, that one took me the better part of a year, because the library would only let me renew it twice, and then i had to wait for them to re-shelve it before I got it again. really amazing book. the fact that it was so long meant that I got almost to the end before I realized how much he'd evolved from anger to forgiveness. I thought it was going to be an epic revenge saga, and was both surprised and thrilled by how it turned out.

spoiler Friends Forever #31 - Rainbow Dash and Little Strongheart(FINALLY!)
weesh replied to Megas's topic in Official MLP Comics & Books
I was actually not a fan of her style at all...until this issue. It really fits the ancient buffalo history storytelling thing. the art really makes up for a lot of the weaknesses of this issue. The story is substandard. And the character interactions are not terribly interesting. But the buffalo are pretty cool, and i'm happy to get more of them. The story may have lacked overall cohesion, but there were plenty of good moments. from the coyote hanging off Rainbow's tail, to the repeated "what did she say?" joke, to the stunning artistic collaboration between the to artists on the last page. -

well, enabling people is bad, and people sometimes lie to themselves and others rather than confront someone with truth they need to hear. it can also build trust when it is vulnerable.- 3,318 replies

S06:E16 - The Times They Are A Changeling

on the topic of feeling rushed, yes, it avoided a bunch of things it could have done, like proving spike was real, or discussing the ramifications, or being slower to change their mind, but none of those things were required. its possible that they would have detracted from the lesson, and the impact of the song. I think they made the right choice, and i don't think this should have been a two-parter. How would they have divided it up? what would have been the cliff-hanger? -

it was actually the insight into the changelings, them being naturally wild and vicious, which was the biggest disappointment to me, in this otherwise fantastic episode. I'd have preferred that their viciousness be LEARNED. that would make it so much easier to vilify Chrysalis, for one thing, and to accept that change is possible, for another. They way they set it up makes it seem like you have to be born broken to be able to change. It ssems that Thorax was born primed for a change, but maybe no one else can realistically change?
