      Them's Seeing Ponies

I could maybe envision a kid enjoying NCC if said kid is under the age of seven or so and therefore didn't exist back when FWF first aired (or hasn't seen FWF at all). That would at least remove the issue of it being a soulless ripoff of FWF. However, that still doesn't remedy much of the episode's tedium.

  3. I really try not to lash out at people for liking Starlight Glimmer, but her recent surge in popularity continues to baffle me. Am I the only person who thinks she was more interesting back in season 6?

I'm sure you say the same about more people liking season 5 and 7 more than 6 or older seasons. And from what I can tell, you seem to be in the minority that doesn't like those, so maybe that's why it baffles you.

Not to offend, but if you ask me it seems like you're just a contrarian. idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  4. You know, despite the recurring failures of communication and the surprisingly consistent family/legacy themes, I have absolutely no idea what the MLP season 7 finale could possibly be about. Aside from "Magical Mystery Cure," my least favourite finales are those of seasons 2 and 5, and those were also seasons which had almost nothing to make the finale about. But then, at least season 2's was novel for the time, and at least season 5 had Starlight. Especially looking at future synopses, I'm struggling to detect any consistent themes or arcs which could amount to a strong season finale. Maybe something will come up near the end; Twilight's anxiety about being a princess, which is what S4's finale was about, only really appeared in the last couple of episodes and even then wasn't part of the main story, so maybe it's too early to be saying this. But right now, I'm not seeing anything.

Not yet, to my understanding. I don't see how such a two-parter would be emotionally grounded, so I'm hoping for some kind of slice-of-life finale. Still want to see an episode just revolve around a big party.

@Lambdadelta Season 4 ended with Twilight finding purpose as a Princess, and season 6 ended with Starlight regaining confidence in herself. Perhaps not coincidentally, those seasons both came after big changes, whereas season 7 so far has not. I guess we could have Chrysalis, but I don't know what internal conflict that could involve.

      Lambdadelta

What!? This season?! I heard some people complain the premiere is not about adventures and villain ass-kicking. I love Celestial Advice and All Bottled Up, not even a doubt in my mind, but a slice of life FINALE!? This may piss some people, a lot of them.

    4. Thrond

      Thrond

@Lambdadelta To my eyes, season 1 still has the best finale by far. I'd like to see something simple yet somehow significant like that. Big party celebrating the six's achievements, I'm telling you.

Yea def. came out of nowhere especially considering that non-complete clause and trivial pursuit had them hating each other's guts. Minus the mention that them working together is really good, but that def. doesn't justify imo.

In general I could care less about any ships being confirmed or any romance, or children, or romance in general, but if the comics write it up really great then I will def. be happy.

I mean, that's basically what a lot of My Little Pony episodes are like, and I'm not always a fan of it either, but I do think those two episodes are about different things. "A Royal Problem" is about appreciating other people's jobs, whereas "Between Dark and Dawn" is more about realizing how much your sibling's presence means to you.

  12. I’m a big fan of the current direction of “Equestrian Girls.” I feel the shorts are the perfect format for the series, and “Rollercoaster of Friendship” was my favourite long-form EqG thing in years. I still don’t think “Forgotten Friendship” is all that great, and nothing in either special convinced me that EqG is good for much other than vignettes, but those are some awfully delightful vignettes. A longer format isn’t guaranteed to actually give us better substance, as “Forgotten Friendship” shows IMO, so why not just present a bunch of clever skits which move the world forward?

They’ve really gotta do something about the villain problem, though.

  14. "The Hearth's Warming Club" - Oh, nothing much, just season 8 once again showing how mature this show can be if it actually respects kids' intelligence. A lot of this is just cute and funny, and it reminds me more of the show's earlier years than of "The Breakfast Club," though maybe I don't remember that movie too well. Each of the stories is adorable, and the student six have a bunch of amusing reactions; I still don't care about them as much as the mane six, but more stuff like this could easily change that. And then it pulls the rug out from under us and finally touches on territory which the show has beforehand shied away from, and suddenly a mildly pleasant episode becomes so much more. If sloppy stuff like "A Matter of Principals" is what it takes to get these unexpected grace notes, then I'm totally okay with that.

      Thrond

Until the series finale I had always assumed that the princesses' sizes didn't actually have much to do with them being alicorns. We've seen other ponies with similar body types. Maybe the flowing mane only comes after a few centuries, or maybe it's specific to Celestia and Luna for some reason.

    3. Number62

      Number62

It was interesting that Cadance didn't have a flowing mane. I just thought she wasn't old enough even though she has been an alicorn for more than a while, so I also wonder how much time passed for "The Last Problem".

    4. Thrond

      Thrond

Yeah, it’s peculiar. Maybe her mane is all flown after the time skip, who knows.

  16. So am I the only one who loved "The Crystalling" (as in, all of it, Flurry Heart included) or what?

    1. Show previous comments  1 more
    2. Thrond

      Thrond

Honestly that's kinda what I liked about it. I dislike "Princess Twilight" because it's way overstuffed, but "The Crystalling" is low-key and personal. It's about nothing more than Shining and Cadance dealing with becoming new parents, alongside the Starlight/Sunburst stuff. Flurry Heart is cute and funny but she also represents how stressful I imagine parenthood can be. I think people exaggerate how much seasons have overarching plots.

    3. Lambdadelta

      Lambdadelta

Well, as an episode, Crystalling is an enjoyable episode, just like the rest of season 6, but as a season premiere, it should be, you know, intriguing? Season premiere is just like a "hook", to catch your interest, make you wonder what will happen next. After season 4, overarching plots are expected, heck, even some people said S6 lacks sense of direction. S4 finale and S5 premiere set the standard of the show really high and high expectations are inevitable.

    4. Thrond

      Thrond

Well, my tastes clearly differ, as I found seasons 4 and especially 5 to be more lacking in direction in spite of their half-baked "story arcs." The season 2 premiere is the only other one which doesn't set anything up at all, but the lack of any pretense towards having a "major plot" actually kinda refreshing, and for me the only thing the premieres really ought to do is entertain, as this show has never really had a continuous story drawing viewers along. And, y'know...

    4. Thrond

      Thrond

The weird faces here didn't bother me much. I have a lot of patience for stuff happening too quickly in this show as long as it's emotionally satisfying, so Sky improving quickly didn't bother me at all either. Besides, he had Vapour to help him.

    4. Thrond

      Thrond

At some point Celestia ran out of friends who would be willing to crash the Gala for her - I mean, the mane six are probably not willing to embarrass themselves again. Then, she had an idea. A wonderful, awful idea.

My main problem with it is actually that I don't find it very funny at all, and in particular I find the impressions part difficult to watch. I think it might have been nice to have some indication that the Wonderbolts would have stopped calling her that if she was still upset, but I don't know what the right way to suggest that would be.

What I mostly like about it is that Rainbow becoming a Wonderbolt makes me happy, and the fact that she reclaimed the "Rainbow Crash" nickname reminds me how far she's come. She acts bad in this episode because she's anxious and insecure, and that's sympathetic to me.

    3. Them's Seeing Ponies

      Them's Seeing Ponies

This episode is honestly not as bad as the majority of the fandom's viewpoints indicate. The moral is kind of clunky and the lack of humour contributes no means of lessening the impact of the episode's structural inadequacies, but it's mostly an okay watch (and certainly better than a number of S6's other episodes).

  22. I probably would have loved “Forgotten Friendship” if it had 15 more minutes to fix the pacing, and if most of the jokes were replaced. It’s more respectable than a lot of content in this franchise.

    3. Shrug

      Shrug

Ya. Honestly probably my biggest issue was that the villains explanation for hating Sunset was just not really there. With more time, it would improve the villain.

    4. Thrond

      Thrond

I mean, why would Sunset ignore her? Why would that lead to resentment? Why does she focus on Sunset? Apparently it’s her own fault that everyone ignores her, so why should I even care? Her attempts at image control are her most sympathetic aspect, so why is that shoved at the end?

  23. The School of Friendship may have been an awkward idea but I liked it a lot because

    1. It was a much-needed change of pace for a show which I felt was stagnating and running out of ideas for its main characters.
    2. It seemed like a natural evolution of the main-six-as-teachers trend in the show, and introduced a bit more failure and uncertainty to those stories.
    3. It let Twilight work as part of an educational institution, which I had always felt was the perfect line of work for her.
    4. It served as a symbol of acceptance and let the mane six stand against xenophobia, which was a positive development in the show's depiction of non-pony species.
    5. It gave Starlight a clearer purpose in the show, which was especially nice because I felt that season was a major improvement for her characterization.
    6. The main student characters are cute.

      Quote

It suffers from the fact that the idea of an actual School centered around friendship is a really dumb idea, especially when it was established from the first episode that Friendship is something you can't just learn at school.

That was always the elephant in the room, alongside the fact that the mane six also have other jobs, and it's probably the least creative gimmick they could have come up with. Still, by the end of season 7 they could have thrown in just about anything and I would have thought "hey, at least it's something different."

      Quote

Student Six themselves aren't bad in concept, but they suffer from the school as well. If they really wanted them, they should have just been the mane 6's personal students instead

I like that the school offers natural opportunities for them to meet, and I like that the mane six are just "the teachers" to them. It gives us a fresh perspective on the ponies we know and love - something I wish had been a bigger part of those last two seasons. I do think they overcrowd the main cast, though.

Season 8 is fresh and benefits from a lot of increased sophistication but at that point I felt the storytelling often just didn't make sense. How do the mane six have time to both teach at the school and do their other jobs? How have Rainbow Dash and Rarity found no common interests in their years of friendship? Why is being bad at one musical instrument enough to send Pinkie Pie into a deep depression?! By that point it seemed like the writers didn't understand this show at all.

Yeah, it's very silly for the mane 6 who can save the world, do their usual chores and being full-time/or part-time teacher without having mental breakdown. Their stamina must be insane. :ButtercupLaugh:

It's hard to find any friendship problems between mane 6 at that stage of the show without making it too silly. I like when the show has more just 'friendship lesson' episodes. At least the later half of the episode was very entertaining, it didnt bother me that much.

    3. Lambdadelta

      Lambdadelta

Yeah, as far as the show goes on, Slice of Life episodes are proved to be superior in writting. The comics are adventure heavy with dark theme but they are usually bad-written and discontinuity are over the place, yeah, adventures are not what we want from mlp...

I kinda dig a fair few of the comics, though that particular arc is just kinda silly. The comics are willing to give characters a lot more emotional complexity, so I feel like that makes the big adventures feel less meaningless and impersonal.
