    Here's a hard thing to do in writing: Making a story where a character is being tortured where they actually deserve it. This can only work if said character is completely in the wrong or is completely unlikable with no redeeming traits or sympathy. I rarely see this get done perfectly

      I'm surprised "Spike at Your Service" didn't get a mention there. :/ But yes, the only thing worse than Spike I can think of is Meg from Family Guy.

       

      The only one that did the "undeserving punching bag" thing right is Charlie Brown. He is a sympathetic character, and it always seems as if the other characters are the ones shitting on him, never the narrative. In fact, the narrative favors him, and never loses sight of his trait of never...
