Clearly, there are a total of 42 portals (the answer to life, the universe, and everything) scattered across the Equestria Girls world and Equestria, and together they form a grid of magical leylines across the planet (like the Morphing Grid from Power Rangers.)

Why 42? That's really a random number, you know? 

Who ever thought that 42 was the answer to life and the universe or whatever, they were thinking about it too much and making connections where they didn't exist.
