Hey guys, I found this epic rant on Facebook defending Discord as a villain, you should all give it a read. Keep in mind I did not right it, but I do agree with it all the way:
I am disappointed in you people. You automatically hate on something that doesn't deserve it. Let me explain to you why you are all wrong. You think that in order to be a good villain, a character must have some type of motivation. This is only half true.
How I see it is, by following the D&D Alignment Grid, all the main villains can be categorized under Lawful Evil or Chaotic Evil. Nightmare Moon and Chrysalis are both Lawful Evil, where the ratio percentile of Lawful-to-Evil is 50/50 for Nightmare Moon and about 30/70 for Chrysalis. Now, I believe that not only is Discord Chaotic Evil, but so is King Sombra, except, they are on opposite sides of this spectrum. Discord would have a Chaotic-to-Evil of 90/10, and King Sombra would have one of 10/90.
Why is this you ask? Well, Each of the three previous main villains did indeed have circumstantial-specific motives, but you see King Sombra has either not having enough of a motive, or no motive at all, and you see that as the problem. HOWEVER, that is, in fact, the answer. King Sombra had no specific motive to do what he did. Now if you look at that from an entirely different perspective, you would understand that HAVING NO MOTIVE WHATSOEVER TO CREATE AND DO EVIL, MAKES ONE EVIL EVEN MORESO.
Let me ask you this: what person would you be more afraid of - a person that targets and kills specific type of people that perhaps have a shared trait, OR, a person who randomly kills anyone he sets his eyes upon? Your answer should be the latter, since you have a chance to avoid the first by not being the type of person the would want to kill; for the latter, you have no chance of avoiding an attack. THAT, is what King Sombra is. He created suffering and misery for the ponies of the Crystal Empire by putting them through pain and torture during his rule, and HE HAD NO REASON FOR HURTING THEM EXCEPT TO SIMPLY AND UTTERLY PUT THEM THROUGH PAIN, because he felt like it. He was described to have "a heart as black as night"... shouldn't that be evidence enough that he was indeed an evil being of a very high caliber? It certainly is for me.
Once again, the MLP fandom has failed in realizing the true potential behind a character, regardless of how much story-involvement they had, and simply judged based on what they saw. You disgust me.
(Note: And yes, I have King Sombra as my profile pic, because I'm not blind like most of you, and developed an honest and sincere appreciation for him as a character.)
