What would happen if Celestia or Luna got sick?

Yes, we all know Celestia raises the sun, and Luna, the moon. But what if either one was too ill to perform said duties?

The illness would have to be pretty serious for this, but I assume both sisters are capable of performing each others duties. We know Celestia raised the moon for 1,000 years.

She would either give her magic to Twilight (just like in Twilight's Kingdom), or do nothing and the ponies would have to get used to an eternal day/night (assuming this is a temporary disease)

Well, I would imagine that both Twilight and Cadence were made princesses for various reasons; among those being to take over for when Celestia and/or Luna were incapacitated in some form.

 

I would imagine that they could do the job if a magic transfer was done again.

If one of them got sick the other one would fill in for them but if both of them got sick, they would probably ask Twilight and Friends™️ to take over for a while

Let's go by the show's logic and the needs of the audience.

Would Luna or Celestia ever be terminally ill? No, that's not something that would be shown for the show's demographic.

Would they ever be really sick? Maybe, I can see a story to explain to kids that sometimes even grownups get really sick and what happens when they do, why they are so worried about their jobs, things like that.

Would they get sick? If only for comedy. Imagine Luna or Celestia with a cold, or magic pony pox. Twilight had a horn allergy that was thought to be alicorn-specific but her sickness was not too serious.

Celestia can raise the sun and the moon alone, it's very possible Luna could do it too. I headcanon that it is easy for a sister to raise their OWN celestial body, but they find raising the opposite a lot harder because it's not their talent. But it very much can be done.
They could give their duty to Twilight or Cadance if both were sick, but I see them leaving the day-to-day running to trained palace staff if we don't need it as an episode plot á la Between Dusk and Dawn. Unicorns CAN raise the sun and moon, as they did before the Sisters did that as their jobs, so they could be taught to do it again.

Long story short: If one was sick, the other would take on duties. If both were sick, trained staff would take care with some help from Twilight and Cadence. Under no circumstances would the show show them as seriously, gravely or terminally ill.
