Bright Bastion 241 September 17, 2014 Share September 17, 2014 icu/larI may seem picky on the subject, but personally I don't like any OC that can't justifiably fit into the show (ie, colours that deviate too much from the shows palette, ridiculous non-canon parts of their appearance like broken horns, crazy proportions and crazy coat patterns, overly perfect or overly dark back stories/personalities). Just my opinion though. I agree, Although what qualifies as overly dark? If they have a reason then I think it's fine. But without a reason it's weird. (I have a reason for mine that I will write) I have an OC (it's still so wierd to call it an OC) That has a "broken" horn. It was completely removed for committing a crime (Magically not literally torn off). He's is the antagonist, but I'm not sure on whether it's a good idea to go through with that Idea, sort of half of the reason I'm looking at this thread particularly. The other half is the protagonist, so Basicalyl my two main characters T_T. Cheria (right) is a small town girl who was afflicted with a terrible sickness when she was very young. Meeting Sophie changed that however. She recovered almost instantly from her illness due to Sophie's magic and gained an undeniable talent with her own, and what does she do with this magic? She acts as a healer for her small town and helps the militia keep the hostile border safe. Seven years later, she's started a nation-wide relief organization after her adventure with Sophie and Friends, a great connection to the element of generosity. Dattebayo 2,850 September 17, 2014 Share September 17, 2014 -neon color scheme -dark past (oooooh!) -related or acquainted with Canon characters -recolor of a Canon character -Abilities that rival or surpass powerful canon characters -half-pony/half anything. Unless you're trying to do something mythological, your Dragon pony is superbly grodie. -batpony (pls no stop trying so.hard) -super complicated name or incredulous name (strawberry neon sky) (Deathmare) Also, if they are alicorns, you lose automaically. ^Click for my Deviant Art^ You truly are the Rosa Parks of not understanding what r34 is. Bright Bastion 241 September 17, 2014 Share September 17, 2014 (edited) Sounds like more often than not Alicorns are getting thrown under the bus. Not that that's a bad thing, OC Alicorns is a mark in the wrong direction for me but it's not instantly damning. The Crimson Cross 7,532 September 17, 2014 Share September 17, 2014 I don't know all that much about the art of OC's but I'd imagine overpowering so that they're basically invincible is a start. And then you have interactions with the main characters! I'm not even sure what a Mary Sue is but I hear people talking about it, so yeah, I'll say that too! All I think of is Jane Austin when I hear that name! Now with more added tea leaves! My fantastic signature made by Gone Airbourne
Shadowking58 1,137 September 17, 2014 Share September 17, 2014 I think that differing from a bad oc to a good oc varies per person. Although, having an oc that is the "creator of the universe", has no flaws, or yeah a mary sue are probably a few of the widely accept "rules" of a "bad" oc Madoka is a god, and she is creator of the universe. CP3_P0n3 170 September 17, 2014 Share September 17, 2014 To be precise, bad OC is often defined by people themselves. Look at the comments, everyone have their own preferences of a bad OC. So, what qualifies as a bad OC is an OC which does not justify the person's idea of a good OC. Here's what I think of a bad OC: -Mary Sue (general) -OP (general) -Nonsense or ridiculous backstory, too tragic can also be bad. -Poor personality development (no mix of positive and negative features) -Poor colour coordination -Ponified version of an official character whether popular ones or unpopular ones (not wrong to take inspiration from them) -OC too general in character development -Mute OC Personally, having alicorns or any other creature in the MLP universe as an OC is not a bad thing as long as it does not have any of the above. Mephala 2,633 September 17, 2014 Share September 17, 2014 (edited) -Mute OC What's wrong with having a mute OC? Deaf or blind or unable to walk or anything is okay, but mute is not? (Deaf, in this case, would obviously be ruled out, since they would be at least mostly mute.) I have a pony named Razzle Dazzle who's mute, but she has a translator for her...er...hoof language. Or what if someone wanted to make a ponysona, but couldn't speak? Does that automatically mean their own personal issue makes their character a bad character? Also you have an android OC, so? (I get that it's a "parallel world" or whatever you wrote there, but I can't help but feel that violates your own rules you set out up there. Created by Twilight? Being an android in general that has the ability to become ANY KIND OF PONY???) Edited September 17, 2014 by Bubble

CP3_P0n3 170 September 17, 2014 Share September 17, 2014 @, By mute I mean a character who cannot interact at all by any means, sorry if that confused you. My Android OC is based on a fanfiction I wrote. Her personality is pre set up by Twilight of that world and it will later developed into her own through watch and learn. I admit I kinda violated (a bit) my own rule there, up to you if 'parallel world' means ridiculous to you. She doesn't have magic so technically she can't be a unicorn or alicorn. btw, thanks for looking at my OC and for commenting too ^^ <^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^> $~Cross my greens, hope to fly, stick a knuckle in your face~$ $***@###-------------###@***$ My OC >>> Heartless , Crystal Marine
Bird Mom 900 September 17, 2014 Share September 17, 2014 DEFINITION FOR SMARTIES: Original Character ~ A character in a major franchise created by a fan of something, and self inserted into that franchise usually via art and fan fictions. ~ An OC, is an OC. No one should be able to criticize ones OC, nor make fun of it because it is basically the creator itself. ~ DEFINITION FOR TROLLS: An excuse to make horrible fan art and parade it around like it's the best in the entire world. "Pay attention to these petals, Steven. The petals' dance seems improvised, but it is being calculated in real time based on the physical properties of this planet. With hard work and dedication, you can master the magical properties of your gem and perform your own dance!"
