Why the hate for OCxcanon?

Deathstroke

Recommended Posts

Well there are many reasons. A large part of it is because quite often they are poorly written. When comming across a ocxcanon character ship fic, quite often it will be poorly written, have massivly gratutitous sex scenes (ones that can streach on for entire chapters of the written work) and never seem to find a reason why these two characters are currently in the relationship they are.

Another reason is that they are heavily overdone. People like to see some semblance of orginality, and 9 times outa 10, someone has already done that exact same "save rainbow dash and get her to love me" scenario before. Since it becomes such a flooded part of fanworks, people begin to despise it due to the ove rabundance of it.

There are of course also emotional reasons for not likeing it, either due to a dislike of the OC or an emotional attachment to the canon character. But most often it is due to the same reasons people do not like most alicorn oc's. Because they are over done in desgin, there is a surplus of them, and often they are not very well made.

The reasons are subjective and in some cases trivial. Therefor the reasons you seek should not concern you.  :maud:

This seems to be a topic discussing Friendship is Magic, so it has been moved to Sugarcube Corner.  General Discussion is reserved for topics not discussing the fandom or the show.

A couple of reasons actually, and this can be attributed to just about every fandom. One reason I've seen is thare are way too many cases of it involving an obvious self-inserts for the author, forgoing any attempt at telling a story and instead focusing on fulfilling their personal fantasy with a fictional character. Even if the OC isn't an author avatar, most things I've seen of this nature aren't drawn/written well or are just plain creepy. Hell, I once found someone on DA who had nothing but 100+ pics in their gallery of their fursona paired with Zero from Megaman X.

I'm not saying that OCxCanon pairings can't be done, it's just that they carry a veritable laundry list of negative connotations and stereotypes that any good ones end up becoming diamonds in the rough

It comes across as an eye-roll inducing self insert. It just seems stupid and kinda desperate imo. I'm one of those people who think it's dumb. I don't think I would care as much if the pic or whatever just had an OC interact with some canon characters, but the clearly shippy ones are kiiinda like, -_- please get a life...

Readers are going to be fond of canon characters by instinct and familiarity. They don't start out with the same appreciation for an OC; you basically have to justify that this new guy is just as lovable and important, and that's an uphill battle.

Think of the widespread dislike for Flash Sentry; "Who is this guy and why does Twilight Sparkle care about him rather than all these other people we know? What makes him so special? We don't even know him!"

Hence, OCs tend to work better at some level of distance from canon characters; either put them in secondary roles or put the canon characters in secondary roles. Otherwise, you have to be careful.

Well people have different opinions, but as long as they don't go overboard and repect others' opinions it's fine with me.

Personally I do Human-OCxCanon --------> time paradox!

I ship Visity, so I'm definitely not against OC x Canon.

Then again, Visity is Visual Spectrum x Rarity, which is essentially Rarity x Me.

Anyways, I don't agree with a lot of the rules. I get the rule to not have an alicorn, but if you can write an alicorn very well, not make them powerful or anything like that, then do it.

There is also a rule not to have OC related to Canon chatacters, but I have two.

Corn Maize is a distant cousin of the Apple Family. The Fanfiction I wrote with him in it had 100% positive rating last time I checked.

Blaze Fire is Spitfire's sister. I'm working on a fanfiction with her in it. Someone else is also writing it.

Yeah, unless your OC isn't an over powered god AND an antagonist, there really shouldn't be crazy rules.

If you want an over powered OC, it's best to make them a villain.

I don't really get why people think that their opinion on how someone expresses themselves with an OC or within the bounds of a fanfic should matter in the very least; particularly to the OC's creator and / or fanfic author.  Anyone who seeks to belittle someone for that form of self-expression (or worse yet, hypocritically runs down another's OC whilst exalting their own) is, at best, a fan that has forgotten themselves and the mix of hate and ostracizing that this fandom receives from those outside its borders.  At worst, anyone who seeks to belittle someone over an OC has completely missed the point of OCs, fanfics, and imagination in general.  Anyone who puts shackles on the imaginations of others has also succeeded in shackling their own.

Oh, and I'm totes working on a hybrid cockatrice / alicorn OC named Corncob (nobody steal him!!!) that inexplicably developed alicorn powers during an especially rousing game of Checkers.  He'd originally planned on pursuing law, becoming Equestria's first cockatrice district attorney, and turning hostile witnesses to stone, but now that he's got alicorn magic he just wants to go around showing it off.  He's shipped with / married to every unnamed background pony in existence.

I think the thing to remember about these "rules" is they aren't meant to be hard-stops-never-do-this-ever but that they are inherently difficult things to pull off in an interesting and original way, and as-such most Bronies should probably not try to create and OC based around those things unless they can do it well. If it's done well it's done well, unspoken-OC rules be damned.

They're usually self-inserts due to a psychological desire to be in an intimate relationship with a fictional character. Usually it just comes across as mary-sueish. However, I will admit, I do ship an OC that isn't mine with Loki from the Avengers. For whatever reason, the author made her OC and Loki's relationship very believable and realistic. And they aren't head-over-heels in love with each other, the OC just has a crush on Loki when she's not attempting to punch his smug face in.

Have the courage to think and act on your own. And have the courage to disobey.

I ship myself with Rarity because she's sexiest pony and better than any human being  but writing a fanfiction that is realistic with us two is very hard. I'm I also have a headcanon that polygamy is legal in Equestria. So Rarijack, Rarighost, Visity, Visualjack, technically Visual Ghost  and Appleghost considering how my views of polygamy is... could work. :D

OC x Canon relationships can work, but they are harder to write, especially if it's Ponysona x Canon because those tend to be too perfect.
