How do you feel about the current economic situation in Detroit?

And what is best pie.

Detroit's still a shithole, can't even walk outta my house without someone trying to mug me for food stamps. FOOD STAMPS. As for pie, it's gotta be key lime.

Do you have to drive to your job?

10 miles there, 10 miles back. Google maps says it takes 21 minutes one-way, I do it in 12.

Dude, this is a league game, this determines who enters the next round robin. Am I wrong? Am I wrong?

You're not wrong, Ghostie, you're just an asshole!

I've gone 12.7 miles in 12 minutes (back when I had class in a nearby town right after I got off work, even though I had 25 minutes til class started, 12 minutes was more fun^_^ ...

hehehe...

So how's that chair working out? And any thoughts on 70's clothing that would work today? ( I start school back Wednesday I was thinking of bombing my year book with the 70's.) And what is your favorite average looking car of the 80's ?

The chair's bitchin', bro. As for your wardrobe conundrum, I'd say go with a brightly coloured short-sleeve button-up, some tight, but not skinny, jeans, and some sneakers.

Now, favorite AVERAGE 80's car... Easy, the Chevy Chevette.

LOL nah, jk.

I mean, the Chevette wasn't really that bad, but ... eh...

It did get good gas mileage.  But it didn't take too long for the amount of Chevettes on the road to start decreasing, and eventually, about the only few you'll see on the road today will look something like this:

Too bad America couldn't have gotten the better looking version from Vauxhall:

Most of the reason you don't see many Chevettes anymore is because they were super cheap and most people saw them as a disposable car, or they simply drove the shit out of them. It was not unheard of for a well-maintained Chevette to top 400k miles. My coworker just recently got rid of hers, but it was still kicking at 350k. Styling and performance left something to be desired, but the car did what it was designed to do, and it did it very well.

A similar problem arose with the Yugo. It was exceedingly cheap with some build quality issues, and it had some special maintenance requirements. Namely, the timing belt had to be replaced every 35-45,000 miles or the engine would rip itself apart. This was a fact that every Yugo owner seemed to ignore, and thus they were left with a dead car after only a few months.

As far as styling, I do prefer the late 70s models, but I don't really mind the obnoxious 80s vibe of the later models.

Yah - I hope you didn't take what I said the wrong way!  I wasn't bashing on it.  I was just saying that it, well, "it was what it was" y'know?

What do you think of Vauxhaul's version of it (the last pic in my above post)?

Chrysler, I'm looking at buying a fun to drive sport sedan.

What's your top choice in the segment?

It really all depends on your budget and your personal tastes. If you're looking new and high-dollar, then the Chrysler 300C SRT8 and the Chevy SS are pretty good. I think Infiniti makes a pretty nice one as well, but I can't remember which one it is. A slightly less expensive alternative to the Chrysler would be the Dodge Charger SRT8. If you're a Ford guy, the new Taurus SHOs are wicked quick, but they're AWD, which I'm not really a fan of. Good for snow and ice, though...

New and mid-priced would lead us to the 2015 Chrysler 200's, the Honda Civic, and the Ford Focus ST 5-door. That last one's a hatch, but it's fun all the same.

If you're looking late 2000's, then you're probably gonna want to go with a Pontiac G8, the GXP if you can find it and it's in your price range. It's actually a re-badged Holden, which means it's got all of the Aussie-supplied batshit-insanity you could possibly need.

Again, the 300C and Charger SRT8s pop up, but the early-model styling and performance on the both of those is pretty meh.

Early-mid 2000's, these years are pretty crap as far as sports cars go. Subaru Impreza WRXs and Mitsubishi Lan Evos from this time are alright, but not as good as they were in the late 90's.

Late 90's had pretty good Subarus and Lan Evos. Fun cars to drive, and pretty damn quick.

Late 80's, early 90's had the Taurus SHOs, but I would personally ditch the sedan and go for the GMC Syclone. Twin-turbo V6 pushing 280 hp in a 4WD small truck body. That thing was kick-ass.

Hmm, I hate trucks. I prefer sedans, and really anything that isn't a truck.

Is that considered bad to an automobile fan?

Trucks are kick-ass, yo. I drive one.

  • 1 year later...

What's your opinion on the AMC Pacer?

I actually really like Pacers. Story behind 'em is pretty interesting, too. They were originally designed for a GM-sourced rotary engine, that is until the folks at GM realized who they worked for and decided they could never get away with something so radical. So it ended up being hastily adapted for a straight six, and the actually sold pretty well for the first couple of years.

It was like the PT Cruiser of its day. Super cool when it first came out, but then the novelty wore off and everyone was like "ew".

I actually am in the process of restoring a '79 Pacer Wagon, hence why I asked. The PT Cruiser analogy is pretty spot on, the Pacer had such a bad social stigma by the 1980s that my "child of the 80s" mother refuses to ride in my Pacer to this day. It's true that they built quite a few in the mid seventies, but by the late seventies they were selling hardly any, and it's next to impossible to find one today that hasn't been totally nuked (took me ten years to find mine and even it's pretty rough). However, the search is well worth it for a certain type of person- I seriously think a Pacer garners more attention I today's world than any late model exotic.

What are you driving now. And if its not what you really want what car do you wish you could have.

Right now I drive a '99 Chevrolet S-10. Two-tone Victory Red/Light Pewter, 4.3L V6, automatic transmission. It's a good little truck, but what I really want right now is a Lexus SC300, the U.S. version of the Toyota JZZ31 Soarer. 2JZ-GE I6 engine, preferably with a standard transmission. Tried, and failed, twice to purchase one. Haven't seen any good ones around since.
