The odd thing is that works of art, from architecture, to watercolors, to literature, to Calvin and Hobbes, to MLP ... the best ones can start a discussion. This is exactly what is happening. I love this discussion.

I won't say how I feel towards the person who drew this.  Whom I will never meet and have neither cause nor desire to.  I won't even say, outright, how this drawing makes me feel.  I will, however, say that I am utterly incapable of discerning any kind of artistic or creative value from it whatsoever.  This is purely a drawing that says, "Hey, lookit me!  Not because I'm particularly well drawn.  Not because the person who drew it has accomplished anything remotely unique or interesting.  Lookit me because I'm deliberately trying to upset people and therefore potentially inflammatory.  Best part?  There are lotsa me."  Everyone familiar with the expression "a dime a dozen?"  Which I guess is the general concept behind a meme; they aren't necessarily supposed to be worthwhile.  They're largely intended to, just, exist and waste a moment of your time.

I don't really get why a good bit of people are flipping out about this, it's just a drawing and says nothing about the creator nor does it say that she/he supports abuse in real life. It could have been vent art, and even if it wasn't, it's a fictional character. If it bothers you that much to the point where you want to 'beat' the creator, go look at the 'Not Doing Harmful Things To Your Waifu' Charts and take a chill pill.

So, my 2 cents:

 

Firstly, I want to thank the OP for posting this pic — it made me ride an interesting emotional roller coaster (first hate, then sadness and finally solace). It has little to do with Derpy (though now because of this pic, I feel a new connection to her), and more about my personal experiences. I don't hate the creator of this work (speaking seriously though, I hate all grimdark — again, because of my personal experiences), nor do I want his head on a pike for some sort of revenge for a non-crime.

 

Having said that though, I will say that I hate this pic. It reminds me of the darker parts of my past and I can relate to every panel (not because of an abusive relationship, but from years of bullying — even the final panel, where Derpy is blaming herself for her eyes and tries to "fix" them to please someone else). I hate this pic because I don't want that stuff to happen (I know, it still will) and even if it's happening to a fictional character, I still cried over this picture.

 

I know, it's a fictional pony and it isn't rational to care or cry over it, but emotions aren't rational. I'm not saying "if u don't feel from dis, ur heartless D :< ", but not everyone will react the same to this pic — people are complicated.

 

Anyway, rant over.

I don't think we can make assumptions about he artist in question being some kind of asshole. It's not really fair to do that based on a single picture. It is, after all, a meme. I think it's more likely that he made the picture to contribute to the meme than because he has some deep, underlying issue.

 

I do hate that picture, though. Hate the meme, too. I see things like that, and it just makes me sad. Dude has every right to make it. All the same, I find it to be pretty distasteful. I generally dislike art that depicts somebody innocent getting hurt or bullied. It's part of the reason I dislike grimdark, too.
