It was, but I was talking about the fact the system failed in a couple years.

Then again, it was because of how easy to pirate the games thanks to it being based on Windows CE.

Also, Microsoft started their own system... ("With Pentium 3, and Halo. As a matter of fact, forget about the system.")

Speaking of that, I own a Dreamcast and have no games(and can't seem to find any good one's locally) and wouldn't mind a PM related to the matter how that my in theory work if someone get's my drift...

Funny thing though...

Does anyone here know that the classic Half-Life was supposed to have a DC port?

It was supposed to have an exclusive multiplayer map too.

The secret to the copy protection is that there wasn't any.

:/

Edit: Before someone jumps on me about this, yes it did, but it was rather easy to defeat.

Later versions of the hardware fixed this, but the damage was already done.

How do I tell if mine if old enough to played burned games, and what do I have to do make a playable CD?

I'm hoping this weekend or next weekend, I'm reunited with my PC games. There's a bunch of them I want to replay that I didn't get much of a chance to play that I'd love to come back to. Unfortunately, they're in a different house than the computer I'm on right now. :(

(coming soon)

What will happen to the systems because they would have PCs emulating their stuff?

Then again, the DS's games were pirated like crazy, and look at how many units that thing sold.

I just don't think most people will be bothered. It's easy enough to buy a game, pop it in and go online to play. With the "jailbreak" (and presumably emulation if they manage to do it) of these systems, so I'm told, you might lose the ability to go online, which many people including myself aren't willing to give up. That, and there's also the associated costs of getting whatever hardware or software you might need to accomplish it. Then you gotta figure out how to do it and at that point, people are just going to throw up their hands and buy the game already, because that's what they bought a console for, for it to just work.

It's far, far easier to go torrent something or whatever on a PC and run it at least in my opinion.

Playing a DS game on a PC? Seems kinda... meh.

I was dicking around on NewEgg(it may be my only choice), but I came up this and I wanted to run it by you guys and see if it looks good I covered all my bases.

It's pretty good for what you're looking for in that budget, especially the CPU and motherboard. The only issues I have is the BD drive. Since I have that same drive, I must make mention that unless you have a Bluray disk reader program installed on your computer like these: http://blu-ray-player-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ you won't be able to play blu ray disks as they have a HDCP protection that prevents you from playing blu rays on anything that isn't a dedicated bluray player I believe. Also I'm curious for the extra Lan card as technically your motherboard already comes with that.

Looks good, but I'd get a different power supply. Haven't heard many good things about Raidmax, I think.

While I'm on the subject, be aware of your PSU's manufacturer. Just because it has a certain brand doesn't mean it's built by them! As an example, Corsair's AX series power supplies are built by Seasonic (amazing OEM), while Rosewill's HIVE series is built by Sirtech (bad OEM.)

PSU manufacturer reference list, for anyone interested. Also, the PSU tier list.

I didn't know it had one XD. I don't mind needing something to run them, I just though be able to watch them on my PC would be cool.

Glad I asked now. That saves me a little bit.

Would there another one in that price-range you'd suggest?

Put together your PC on PCPartPicker to get an idea of the estimated power draw. 284W. Nice. Although I noticed you chose a MicroATX case... that mobo wouldn't fit in that case. So I replaced it with the Azza SIRIUS ATX mid tower. Also replaced the hard drive with a Western Digital Blue as Green is terribly slow.

How does this unit look? (Although it's listed as Tier 3 on the tier list, it should still be good as long as you don't go for any serious overclocking.) Remember, you do not want to cheap out on power supplies as they are the life-blood of your PC, so keep that in mind.

PC put together on Newegg came out to $655.72 with $7.84 shipping, at least to my location. Not bad.

Oh, I should probably list the specs for my current laptop.

AMD A10-5750M APU quad core c@ 2.5 GHz turbo up to 3.5 GHz. built in Radeon 8650G and 8 GBs of DDR3 RAM.

It runs most games fairly well. GTA IV runs fine on low, considering how badly optimized it is. But when I get my Rig in tax return season, I'll be able to play more games.

My system is nothing special compared to what some of you guys have but it gets the job done.

Build start date: ca. February 14, 2013

  • When I had enough money saved to start buying parts.

Initial completion date: March 28, 2013

  • The day that the system was built just far enough to start running

Final completion date: July 10, 2013

  • When I bought my last part - I haven't added anything since then.

Sound system was 5.1 channel but the layout of my new apartment doesn't afford me the room for the luxury of 5.1 so I'm currently running 2.1.

CPU: AMD FX-6300

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition

Mobo: ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0

Case: RAIDMAX Blade

Other parts:

WD 500 GB Hard drive (main HDD that stores games)

Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD (128 GB) (Boot drive)

Seagate Barracuda 1 TB Hard drive (stores other things and is a backup for certain things)

LG Blu-Ray Drive

Corsair TX-650 PSU (650 watts)

Rosewill WiFi card

USB/SD card reader in the front 3.5 inch bay

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro

It's about more than just gaming. I use it for WAY more than gaming. So when I built it, I was looking for budget and balance. If I wanted to only game, I probably would have gone with Intel/Nvidia for my build. A lot of people gripe about AMD but I've been using this rig for about 19 months now and it works just as well as it did when I finished building it. In fact, it plays games BETTER now than when it did when I finished it. Whether you could do 1080p @ 60fps was kinda like Russian roulette. You just didn't know. Now it'll take just about anything I throw at it, except Borderlands 2, which has worsened because I can't figure out how to disable PhysX.

Anyway the object of this machine is budget gamer/do everything else too. One of these days, though, I'd like to convert it to Intel/Nvidia because even though AMD offers some pretty good stuff for the money, Intel just has the highest end parts. But that plan isn't set in stone. I'm just thinking about it. As it is, I'm just waiting for my parts to either break or become so obsolete they're not worth keeping anymore.

So after my stepfather decided to reignite my desktop-building drive, I've found a combination of components that will give me more power than the G751 for literally $1,000 less. Kind of surprised, I didn't think it was possible, but then again, desktop builds ARE becoming more affordable.

Now then, on a laptop. I wanted to get one in tandem with this build; would a Lenovo Y50 be a nice upgrade from an HP Pavilion G6-2129nr? I'm looking for a cheap gaming laptop that DOESN'T sound like a jet fighter anytime I launch something like Steam or even something incredibly low end like MapleStory. It LOOKS like a good deal for $1,000, I mean, hell, it's got a GTX 860M in it, and that HDD is definitely a jump from my 500GB.

Simply put, yes. I've heard that the screen is okay at best, probably the weakest aspect of it, but it'd be a huge upgrade from a HP Pavilion G6-2129nr.

Consider the ASUS G75 in that price range with the 860M. I have a y510p and Lenovo disabled turbo to prevent the CPU from overheating. Heatsink is shared between CPU/GPU and throttles based on a relatively low temp, locking it at it's base clock.

I like the laptop but frankly the cooling sucks and from what I've read on the Lenovo forums, the y50 is no different.

Heh well that sucks. As for the G75...I was HOPING for something in 15.6" so it would fit in my dragonscale Bag of Holding. Nothing TOO overpowered, I'm hoping for around the $700-800 price range if at all possible. Probably a bit too tight for a laptop that would be half gaming and half college work, but...yeah. Any thoughts about this one?

Odd. I dunno why. It has a $15 MIR though, that should help make up for the cost.

What about this one? It looks cool and it's a another mid-tower(and it comes with a couple fans, it looks like):

I don't have much experience with MSI laptops. My only impression was a friend's 17" which he returned. Build quality wasn't amazing.

Amazon has an ASUS GL551JM for around $1100. It's an 860M and the reviews are pretty good. One review mentioned they were surprised at how much cooler it was than the y50, interestingly enough.

It is a single fan design though, but good enough engineering trumps that, I suppose.

To be fair, the Lenovo only throttles when the CPU is fully loaded, but if you're buying a laptop like this, I'm guessing you need the power. :)

Edit: Is the 840M enough? If so, your price is doable.
