Hello, i recently registered on this forum :) and the reason why is to know about the show and the fandom..

My main question is: Why a tv show that is clearly not for teenagers or adults appeal so much to them? What this show have in special?

I did not have see the show yet, but i know about it because i seen a series of parodies by hotdiggedydemon on Youtube based on MLP and i thought it was pretty funny.

I understand that some may think im just a troll and im here to mock the fandom, but its not it, im sincerely curious and considering watch the show, so please be nice. :)

I'm writing a 10+ page research paper relating to this very thing, and that's single spaced and not including citations/appendices.

The short answer: it's a good show. Watch it to see for yourself.

The long answer: many people like it for different reasons, and listing all of those at the moment is something I'm too lazy to do.

Well, think about Pixar movies. They are "children's movies", but are imaginative, thoughtful entertainment for any age, and grown men far and wide proudly sat in theaters to watch Toy Story 3, because dammit, it was good, and you cared about what happened to Buzz and Woody and all the gang.

NO NO FRICK NOT AGAIN MY FEELINGS HAD ENOUGH THE FIRST TIME

This revival of My Little Pony has the same appeal. It's a detailed world with interestingly woven characters and a lot of heart around its central theme of friendship and the bonds between people. It's nicely animated in Season 1 with great detail in the background characters, and exquisitely animated by Season 4. It's well voice acted. The humor can be pretty good (though Littlest Pet Shop is funnier). There's a lot to like.

But the growth of the fandom is truly a bit of a runaway effect. There's plenty of other great children's TV with much smaller fanbases. I think the creativity and passion of the fans, however, has just caused the show to reach its tendrils far and wide and suck in fans of all sorts of genres. Sci fi lover? Country music fan? Literal music video fan? There's a pony alternate universe, song, and literal music video for you.

This fandom specifically appeals to my tastes.

Have fun watching the show, and remember, Applejack is best pony!

The show has great animation, songs and voice acting, but what gets you into MLP is how well written are the characters and episodes.

Watch season 1, by half of the season i'm sure you'll start to understand, or maybe even after the first episode, but most of the people start enjoying the show in episode 9.

As I tell anyone else: Target audience has nothing to do with enjoyment factor. We enjoy it because it's actually a good show. Opinions vary about whether it's the best cartoon on the block or just another show to watch but it wouldn't be so popular if it wasn't at least a little good.

People treat MLP like it's oh so different from everything else. It's not. It's not super special, it's not super terrible. People of all ages watch it for the same reason they'd watch Kung-Fu Panda.

I think it would've been best if you've watched the show before signing up.

You sure you don't want to watch the show first?

Anyway, I think the show is pretty good. It's no Avatar, but I think it's well made. Also I've always liked the idea of something bad being remade into a good version.

And no, target audience doesn't mean anything. It's just a demographic that executives focus their marketing towards.

Not necessarily. A lot of people are wary of bronies and getting to know the fandom before watching the show can ease them into it. Plus in some cases the people you interact with can enhance your entertainment experience.

Plus even if not for MLP there's a lot of other kinds of discussion to sign up for. We got games, musicians and politics riddled throughout the forum. No need to exclude someone because they haven't seen the show yet.

Fair enough. I didn't mean to make it seem like I'm telling people what they can or cannot do. I guess I should've worded it better.

My point was that I thought it was odd that someone would join the forums without seeing the show.

I will watch the two first episodes and i will give a feedback of what i think here :)

Just so you know, the show changes greatly as it goes on so don't judge the whole thing based on just the first two. The pilot episodes are actually going for a completely different feel than most of the series so even if you don't care for them jump around the first two seasons to get a better idea of how the show flows.

So i watched the two first episodes of the first season, now im finishing the second season... it became like addction, i just could stop watching it...

I think the biggest reason i watched the second episode is because the first one ended with a cliffhanger and i wanted to know what would happen in the end and after this i became instantly hooked. Loved the show!

Come to the Pony side! We have muffins!   Sorry...really couldn't resist B) It's an interesting show, not the usual solve a stupid problem in one or two steps, it's a bit more involved, and it's fun to watch!

Lauren Faust wanted to make a show where parents could sit down and watch it with their kids without wanting to puke afterwards.  The show was well crafted with interesting characters who have both strengths and weakness.  This make them feel alive and usually you can relate to them in some way or another.  The show also does a good job of not falling into the "girl show" stereotypes.  They don't have slumber parties, tea parties and giggle about boys or just being popular in each episode.  Backing up the deep character is wonderful animators, artists, and voice actors who make the world colorful and interesting without going overboard.  The actors give the character that extra bit of life.  The show is also supported by wonderful writers and musical talents.  The background music does its job and adds to the show without being to strong or distracting and the musical numbers are catchy and well crafted  The other staff behind the show play equally important roles.

As others have said the only way to really understand is to watch it for your self.

Honestly? A year and some ago, I read a fanfic of one of my favorite video game franchises that involved ponies (Fallout: Equestria), and thought it was amazing. It drove me to watch the show, which obviously was a striking contrast to what a post-apocalyptic RPG tends to go for. What turned me to actually like it so much, however, was:

-It's light-hearted humor; some of the visual gags and sillyness, the slapstick, clever puns here and there are actually kinda funny.

-The characters are lovable, they slowly grow on you, and you may start liking them after watching some of the show.

-With the exception of few which i didn't like that much (personal opinion of course), most of the episodes have good writing.

-I like the music and animation.

-Great voice actresses.

you can easily find an answer to your question by either watching the show yourselve, forming your own opinion or literally just typing your question into google.

there are a billion threads dedicated to this very topic, this question has been asked countless times and has been answered equally as much.

I hope i am not sounding like an a****** here(because i am really not trying to), so welcome to the forums, i guess. :)

I got into it because I have a child in the demographic that's a huge fan. The first episode I watched was Magical Mystery Cure and I just got caught up in it and that world. It actually got me back into fanfic writing for a time too. I agree with the other posters sentiments as well. At this point it's self sustaining, or as they sing in Hearth's Warming Eve 2.11: "The fire of friendship lives in our hearts"...

I think the creators tried to make the show appeasable to everyone.

Creators these days are trying to do that more and more, because it increases the chances of having something like a brony phenomenon occur again. Big film and entertainment noticed how this happened in microcosms with each release of Pixar films.

There are a lot of reasons and they can vary from person to person but a few of the most common reasons are with all the depressing stuff going on a lot of people want something fairly happy and positive and a show about cartoon ponies seems to do it for a lot of people craving that. Unlike an increasing number of shows these days MLP dosen't dumb things down or insult its audience, it actually tries to tell a story that while kid friendly was designed so that teens and even adults could also enjoy it. It is the same strategy as has been pointed out in a previous post that Pixar and a few others have used quite successfully. And of course with so many people so surprised that teenage and adult fans exist a lot of them get curious themselves and check it out and some of whom found out that they like what they see. There is a lot of hate but ironically I think the hate has actually created more fans by generating more curiosity/buzz so the joke is on them.

Hahahahahahah! That's exactly what happened to me. Only that was 3 years ago.  Heheh

But as people have stated above there are many reason why people like it, but mainly it is cuz its a good show. Thats why i got into and what has kept me in this fandom for three years is well, the fandom itself. It's full of many awesome and creative people. It's crazy how much fan content is out there, from to music to anything! fcourse the fandom also has its not-so-great people but every fandom does. I think you will have a great time.

Also if you have anymore questions, I know a lot about the fandom so I could probably answer them.
