Does Anyone Else Hate Derpy?

Hating Derpy is like hating a special needs kid you don't know but a lot of people seem to like. You don't know anything about them except they are special needs and a lot of people like them. That is how Derpy is. We know she is a mailmare, she's clumsy, she has some disorder that causes her eyes to go in different directions, and she likes muffins. We don't know if she's obsessed with muffins, though. We don't know much about her. So how is that any different?

I hope you hate Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, too. I think Pinkie Pie also has a lot of fans, so hate her, too. Same with Vinyl Scratch. However, you probably hate those characters and only like characters like Applejack, Rarity, Noir, and other "underrated" characters because a big fanbase is a great reason to hate a character according to you.

Why is everyone so hellbent on the assumption that Derpy is special needs. Not only has it never been officially stated, but cocked eyes and clumsiness is a common trope in cartoons to represent a character that isn't too smart.

I'm under the impression there shouldn't really be a need to "openly" hate any pony. If you're somewhere where the topic is relevant, and people happen to like that pony, then it's probably going to end up as a "stop liking what I don't like" scenario, regardless of how you say it. It's not really an idea you can change, since you can't prove an opinion wrong...the best you're going to get is a lot of people angry at you.

She could be a genius for all we know. Pinkie Pie is a genius according to Twilight, and she may seem to be stupid be at times. (Especially in Season 4.)

I can't ignore it when it's practically 80% of the fandom going into an ape like rage over Derpy getting censored.

And why shouldn't they have been upset? By completely changing her appearance, they do several things.

1. Derpy's character is out of character. She went from a mare with a clumsy, adorable, childlike innocence to someone who was sarcastic.
2. Dash's lines become much more gentle. This makes her actions truly patronizing because Derpy is suddenly not treated as an equal, but someone with below intelligence (when in fact, she's not an idiot, no matter how much you believe otherwise).
3. Hasbro sent huge implications that people who like Derpy have no meaning being represented in any way, shape, or form. That people like Derpy don't truly exist. This form of censorship is factually offensive because it's demeaning of Derpy, her fans, and the fact that there are people like her out there who adore her.

Also, it's incredibly ignorant of you to use the fandom as a reason to dislike her. In fact, it's one of the stupidest reasons to think of because you're scapegoating the fandom. By letting them influence you to dislike her, you're saying you don't genuinely enjoy any character in this show. Not Derpy. Not anyone.

 

Sure, Derpy's censorship was irritating at first then I realized "Who the f*** cares, it's a damn cartoon about Technicolor talking horses."

I hear this excuse all the time, and it never becomes any less dangerous. People become extremely attached to various characters for several reasons, one of which is how much they can really relate to them. Each of the Mane Six is very relatable in some way. Derpy is inherently relatable herself thanks to her innocent personality and sudden appearances.

 

Characters are represented by their fans, and characters become impressionable. It's especially the case for children, as fictional characters become role models. By changing her appearance, you're telling these kids Derpy has no reason to exist and that liking her for who she is is a mirage. IIRC, there was a firsthand story of a brony who was handdrawing Derpy while riding in a train; a little girl saw it and was very hurt by Derpy's censorship. Therefore, he handed her the drawing.

 

The fact that she's one of the most popular characters in the show, even moreso than most of the main characters, despite doing absolutely nothing, is also ridiculous

To claim it's ridiculous for bronies to place her among the top characters is absolutely ridiculous. There are so many great reasons why Derpy is so well-loved (and deservedly so, despite what you and many of the people who brohoofed you think). @@Steel Accord already posted some reasons why here.

TBH, she doesn't deserve all of the love she gets. She's a pointless background character, she's irrelevant to the story, she only had, like, 3 speaking lines, and she has a bunch of annoying cameos that are only there to please the fanbase.

You simply asked when she said it, not if the context meant "specialized, expert knowledge." and I gave the times she said it. Maybe so. But there's nothing saying Derpy is a genius either. There's nothing either way. However, she has shown dumbness for her screen time in the Last Roundup.

no they don't. In most of her on screen appearances, she's seen standing in a crowd, not being "stupid" as you put it. In more of her scenes, she's seen just flying past the screen, quickly, and not being "stupid". In hearth's warming eve, she' poked her head out from behind the curtain and waves to the audience- again, not being "stupid", in the very first episode, she's not doing anything 'stupid', nor is she 'stupid' in the Running of the Leaves, Canterlot Wedding, Rainbow Falls, Pinkie Pride, Magical Mystery Cure, Hirricane Fluttershy, Twilight;s Kingdom, or Applebuck season
