World detail questions.

Hello,

I hope this is in the right place, it seemed to be the location that made the most since.  If it's not, please feel free to move to the correct location, and let me know my mistake.  Thanks.

I am working on the back-story for my OC/Ponysona and would like a bit of help.

For the most part, his background is mine, with a few modifications, as well as a different present day.  However, this means that I have to find Equestrian equivalents to a number of real world events and locations.

First, and primary, is where he came from, as well as where he currently lives.  I am from the Chicago area originaly, and have lived in other locations around the upper Midwest most of my life (in order, Waukegan IL [northern Chicago suburb/city extension], La Cross WI, Iowa City IA, and presently Madison WI [specifically Marshall WI, Madison area].  I'm not sure what the Equestrian counterparts would be to those places.  I always considered Ponyville and the area around it to be general Midwest/Upper-Midwest, but would that make Canterlot the counter part to Chicago?  That doesn't seem quite right to me.

Second, would be higher education establishments in Equestria.  I know about "Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns" and that establishment seems to cover at least K-12, plus university level education.  But is that the only university-esk location?  I know very little has ever been addressed in the show, but I know that the fandom has come up with a few.  What are all of them? Where would they be located?

Finally, though this kind of ties back in to the first one; What would be a good place for an Inventor/Scientist/Machinist/Smith, Archeologist, and Prof. of Archeology be likely to live.  I'm hesitant to say he lives in Ponyville, at least partially because that would put him in the way of the main plot, and I feel like too much is centered there already.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,

Prof. Coppersmith

I'd go with the settlement type rather than find a Direct geographical copy as some Equestrian cites parody amercian ones like Manehatten & Los Pegasus and Appleloosa give or take 100 years, where as some places mimic other places like Trottingham which is supposedly british given Pip's accent, even bits of Canterlot are based on London (victorian London given the way some ponies dress).

The school for Gifted Unicorns is probably not the only such institution, otherwise EVERY unicorn would have to go there and learn magic which would probably be a logistical nightmare so they probably exist in other big cities too. The SfGU is unique however in that it is both implied to be the first Unicorn School and Celestia has known influence over it which makes it more presgious than most schools of magic.

As for professions, Inventors and Machinists would probably be Trottingham as alot of fans believe the the locomotives in equestria are built there (the place it is named after was known for having trainyards) so technology of steam engines would be present there.

Archeology would be Canterlot as the Royal Archives are located there and most likely those who study history that afr back are no doubt at the School for Gifted Unicorns.

Science would depend on the branch. Botantists would love the Everfree for example. XD
