Was 'Best Night Ever' the best finale?

I think comparing this episode to other finales is like comparing apples and oranges...no pun intended. The finales of other seasons are solid in their own right, and I even like roughly 2/3 of the season 3 finale, but this first finale accomplishes what it needs to while providing great character moments that would not be out of place in regular episodes, and it involves all of the mane six relatively equally whereas other finales tend to be Twilight-centric.

I actually wish there were more finales like this one, because while epic climactic finales have their place, and can be great if executed well(and the ones we've had so far have been), sometimes it's nice to just sit back and wrap up the season with some nice character moments, as the show has proven it doesn't necessarily need villains or intense action to be entertaining. I'm pretty sure the season 5 finale will be another grand one in line with the odd numbered seasons, but maybe we'll see another chill finale in the future.

The Season 1 finale felt like it worked really well with the first season, like putting that red bow on top of a present makes it feel complete.

If Best Night Ever would've been the finale for Season two, for example, it would've felt flat compared to how the season felt as a whole. Season two had a more upbeat tempo, using what we've learned about the characters and really challenging their traits and personalities, since we've learned a lot about them in the first season.

I feel like my idea makes no sense. I've been doing WAY too much football talk the last three days. My mind's in NFL extreme analyst mode. :P

Season 4's was awesome and all, but it feels like they've gone too far toward feeding the bronies.

They're not. Bronies are not taken into consideration by the writers.

With the gala episode, I think we could have seen more of the gala. I wanted to see how it ran and how the various classes flowed. There should have been some character development going on. Twilight and the princess. Rainbow and the wonderbolts. Rarity and Blueblood. It didn't have a great ending and I had no reason to care about the gala in the first place. It should have been a regular episode rather than the last.

I don't really have an issue with Twilight-centric finales because at the end of the day (or the season, as the case may be) she is the main character. I suppose that's easy for me to say because she's also my favorite, but I get the feeling that trying to afford each of the mane cast an equal share of screen time just wouldn't be practical in some cases. I think it makes sense that the premieres and finales are largely devoted to our favorite purple protagonist while the rest of the seasons are divvied up more equally. I do like that "Best Night Ever" and "Magical Mystery Cure" manage to be epic without centering around a villain. I hope finales in the future are a little more creative than simply vanquishing a new bad guy in a bigger, more epic way.

I'll have to see 'Twilight's Kingdom' before I make that call. Out of Seasons 1-3, the S2 finale felt more epic and had a lot more action with an effective villain--and she DID have a good plan for taking over Canterlot. Unfortunately, as a Changeling with no positive emotions whatsoever, she was not able to fool everypony and Twilight forced her to go through with her plan too quickly. On the other hand, it also introduced an unnecessary third alicorn.

As far as everyone having an equal part to play, and being true to the spirit of the show as I see it, 'The Best Night Ever' was the best finale I've watched so far with one of the best songs as well.  :pinkie:

What kind of question is this? It was the funniest finale but it sure as hell wasn't the best finale...That would be the season 4 finale.

The OP is asking and challenging us to answer the question because AKR's The Best Night Ever is very funny and very simple, but the most effective in its thematic execution. The Best Night Ever doesn't have several glaring flaws that bring down the quality of the other finales. Some include:

  • In McCarthy's two-part finales, the ReManing Fives share background pony duties in order to make Twilight front and center (each handled very contrivedly). In TBNE, Twilight isn't the star. She and all of her friends share roles equally.
  • Princess Celestia has use in TBNE. In A Canterlot Wedding and Twilight's Kingdom, Celestia (and Luna) are plain useless, the latter falling on really stupid logic by the Alicorn Trio to surrender their magic to Twilight.

MMC? There are serious implications because the whole plot is set on cutie marks being predestination, a complete contradiction of the canon. Conversely, TBNE sticks to the canon very meticulously.

  • Most importantly, the pacing is really inconsistent in every finale except Best Night Ever (the latter flowing from one scene to another at the right time for each).

If I could marry a post this would be the one I'd propose too.

The Best Night Ever is certainly my favorite finale! Not to say that the other finales are bad and I enjoy most of them (MMC has serious pacing issues with me and I don't really like the cutie-mark swap part but I did like the alicornification parts), but I generally don't like the Twilight focus they have as well as they don't fit as well with the general slice-of-life episodes that's more the norm on the show.  Once aging that's not to say they're bad, but there is a certain disconnect when you go from apple farming in one episode to DBZ style fights in another.

My favourite finale episode has to be "A Canterlot Wedding", probably only due to it actually introducing Changelings  :please:

I think the Grand Galloping Gala episode was the best finale we ever got. I mean this is not to say I dislike the other finales with the exception of the Canterlot Wedding (I have my reasons) But the reason I thought the triple G is the best finale is because every single one of the mane 6 had near enough equal screen time, they all had purpose and their purposes came together in the end to give us a funny episode with tons of memorable moments like Fluttershy's "Love me!" yell and Rarity's "Afraid to get dirty?".

If you look at the finales since then they all really equate to "Twilight saves the day" which is all fine and good I suppose but I'd like the others to play major roles as well.

Now before people bring up Season 3's finale and how they were all involved in some way, I point out that their screen time wasn't really equal and it again boiled down to "Twilight saves the day" with the mane 5 not really doing anything helpful but instead being the problem.

they should've all listen to wise o'l spike :D
