Am I the only one who thinks Flutters hasn't developed as a character?

And in the end, anyone can nitpick her character as much as they want, but this is what it comes down to. Fluttershy matters to us, to this one marginalized group. She's an accurate depiction of Anxiety, and she helps people love and accept themselves the way they are. She was made for us. I have heard so many people say so many ridiculous things about her, and it's not that they don't get her character. It's that they don't get us. They don't get Anxiety. And unless they want to try to see what it's like, to feel what we feel, Fluttershy will never make sense to them. Not ever. So, it's a moot point, I guess. I can talk and talk, but lots of people just won't get it.

And I think in believing that, you're being selfish. projecting, and more than a little silly. But hey, I like Fluttershy too, I certainly don't think she's shallow or repetitive.

You know, like Pinkie ;P

Hehe, that's exactly what I was expecting you to say, word for word. That's ok though, in the end you can hate or like or feel however you want about whatever you like. It's all an opinion after all, and it's not like you have any compelling reason to understand. After all, I'll bet characters look like you all the time. You didn't grow up with that issue weighing on you, so why should you care? I'm sure you have problems of your own to busy yourself with.

But this is getting off-topic isn't it? Although, it has taught me a lot about how Fluttershy and her friends have grown, and why they're important as characters. I think we've all learned a lot here

If they all completely changed as a result of their adventures, they would not be the same characters. Then everyone would be pissed that they were not the same pony they liked and they are ruining the show.

There is only so much you can do to a character before they become completely different and non consistency ruins the show.

One of the reasons I like Flutters as a character is because she seems to portrayed realistically in regards to her social anxiety.

If you are someone who is as introverted as Fluttershy is, you know you can't just learn a lesson and instantly become more comfortable around people. You sometimes have little victories as Fluttershy does, but those little victories usually don't have that much effect on your fears overall.

That's why I like the way Fluttershy is written, because she accurately shows that getting over these kinds of fears, is a very long, very painful ordeal.

i never even thought of it like that :s

She really hasn't. All of the Fluttershy episodes, revolve around the same lesson, which doesn't seem to stick beyond the credits.

Twilight has obviously shown the most development, and Rarity and AJ follow after, with Pinkie showing some minor changes. Rainbow Dash has different lessons each time, but they seem to get thrown out in the next episode.

Of course, the theory is that Fluttershy fans like her too damn much, so they keep her in characteristic limbo, just to keep them happy.

Feel free to add me on steam if you want to play something. Also don't be afraid to message and talk to me. I've had bad luck when I start a conversation, so I more then likely won't start one.

Here's what I want to know. Development or no development, do people really want Fluttershy to grow beyond her shyness and fears? Heck, even if they found a really good way to do it, even if it were somehow plausible, I think the show would be a lot worse off for it.

Good question.  Is the Big Bang Theory better or worse since Raj learned to talk to women without alcohol?  Hard to say.  I personally think it was funnier before, and that it's already past it's prime.

We don't want characters to change too much, because we fell in love with them the way they are.  But at the same time, we complain when we see no development.  I don't evny the writters, trying to juggle this problem and please everybody.  It's a common problem with all tv shows.  The only show to ever completely avoid this problem?  Seinfeld.  The characters never developed one bit.  They were exactly the same in the series finale as they were in the series premiere.  They never changed.  And that's what made is so perfect.  They didn't need to.

As far as Fluttershy is specifically concerned, I'm with those who say her fears are realistically portrayed.  I too am a person who has suffered my whole life from low self-esteem and confidence, and I can tell you with absolute certaintly that it is very realistic for her to achieve a victory, learn a lesson, but inexplicably revert back in random situations.  I'm not saying that the writers put this much thought into it, but that's how it works in real life.  I've managed to achieve victories in my life that were pretty amazing, but at the moment I'm actually at my all time low.  It's a constant up and down battle, and often times there's no rhyme or reason to why certain things feel impossible to do, and others not.

I mean look at Twilight. She used to be cocky and self-assured, but then she got over it. She used to have anxiety issues, but then she got over it. And neither of those even happened onscreen! But more than just losing the traits that make her interesting, the problem was that they failed to replace them with anything substantial, leaving her more or less empty as a character. If Fluttershy lost her most defining personality trait, then does anyone really think they'd gve her enough character afterward for her to be worthwhile, when they already failed with the most central character in the whole show?

I think you are right about that fluttershy is the shy one it is in her name.

maybe developed isn't the right word but you do at least tend to see mutiple sides to the other ponies rather than a constant fixed character .

>Implying "Putting Your Hoof Down" featured Fluttershy as the same old character she usually is
