I'm eager to know what people on this forum have to say about India. Just to start off, here are some things you should know:

- India is the world's largest democracy, and it's one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world.

- India has a rapidly growing economy.

- The number zero was invented in India. The modern numeral system that is used throughout the world originated in India.

- India is home to the world's oldest surviving religion, which is Hinduism.

It's a country that exists, full of people like you or me. I don't know much about their politics but I do love their food, fun fact : curry was actually made to cover the taste of rotten meat :D

I would say it isn't the place to visit if you dislike crowds as areas can get crowded. The cuisine is great though.

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.

2 of the worlds largest religions Hinduism and Buddhism both originated in India though Hinduism became far more prevalent in India. Hinduism itself is the most complicated major religion on the planet no joke, there are elements of polytheism, animism, spirit/ancestor worship and even some examples of monotheism. India is also home to a large Muslim minority though unfortunately there has been a lot of religious conflict which eventually resulted in the formation of the country of Pakistan which was once part of India. This has however caused its own set of problems and has had little if any positive effect. The caste system is still a serious problem in India today, one of the main reasons Gandhi was assassinated was his criticism of the caste system. I am a bit hesitant to visit India due to the rather precarious political and religious situation but if things calm down than I might be more inclined to visit.

Well, caste discrimination is illegal and has been for a long time. It is not as common in urban areas as it is in rural areas. While there is religious conflict, education is seen as the way to reduce it. People in India are more aware of political corruption than before and are taking steps to solve the problem.

By the way, Hinduism is actually a very inclusive religion. For example, there isn't really a long and complicated process to become a Hindu. It is just a way of life which you choose to live.

True, what I meant when I said Hinduism is a complicated religion is that it has so many different concepts and ideas stacked into it that it can get quite overwhelming. But like all major religions there are extremists and one of them did in fact kill Gandhi. Discrimination being illegal is good but it dosen't always mean that it dosen't exist. If there are some significant improvements being made in India today than that of course is a good thing of course I confess I am more familiar with the political situation of India during Gandhi's time than today so if I am mistaken about something in this case it would be a good thing. What I do know though is that India and Pakistan do have a very tense relationship even today and there are still some problems between Muslims and Hindu's.

I think it would be a very good idea.

But on the serious side, I like British India, and I like India. What a beautiful place with beautiful people.

I'd probably want to spend several days there, sightseeing at Mumbai, New Delhi, and wherever the Taj Mahal is at :P. Plus I could get used to their cuisine :nom:.

I don't really have an opinion. I've only had a couple of Indian friends, and I can't judge an entire country based of a handful of people I've met from there. As for all the boring political stuff - I don't care.

I've never been, but would like to visit.

-It's the homeland of my neighbors as well as one of my favorite living authors.

-It gave rise to three religions that I deeply admire. Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism.

Beyond that, I know nothing and therefore assume nothing.

- India is the world's largest democracy,

Define "largest" as I'm pretty sure Australia has more landmass and is a democracy.

The country has a very rich culture and history which makes it a prominent travel destination for tourists and historians alike. On the other hand, it also faces longstanding problems fhat have followed it into modernity. Chief among these are overpopulated cities, widespread disease and stagnant poverty in much of the country.

Don't forget Jainism; India is basically the original cradle of religions. Edited by Roughshod

Canada even more so.

But when talking about the size of a democracy, one is normally referring to the number of voters. In that regard, India even beats the EU.

This might clarify: http://www.mintpressnews.com/india-worlds-largest-democracy-also-worst/190816/

In terms of sheer numbers of the populace directly involved in the political process, India is the largest. Many countries have more refined, accountable systems and China technically has more people but of course it's not democratic.

Ah, I see.

Just wanted confirmation on the meaning.

curry was actually made to cover the taste of rotten meat

This is a myth. The tradition of eating highly spiced food is known to go back thousands of years. Back then, rotten meat was barely even a concept. You killed an animal, and then you ate it over the next few days. It didn't have time to go rotten.

Besides which, spice is a terrible way to cover the taste of rotten meat. Pickling would be far more effective at disguising the taste. (Though if you pickle it early enough, it won't rot anyway.)

Many Indians are vegetarian, yet still use a lot of spices.

I'd probably never want to go there.  Too crowded.  (And I hate traveling)  But I love the look of the culture.  Not a fan of the food, though, but that's because I'm a picky eater.  But awesome architecture, cool fashion, beautiful hair and skin tone, sexy accents.

Well, ummmm... it's far more developed than our country. (Not that I hate my country but it really stinks)

In what way is India more developed than the Philippines in your opinion? I've never been there myself.

While both countries economies certainly do have their own ups and downs, this has to be measured against the fact that India has more than 10 times the population of the Philippines.

Without trying to sound too much like an expert on your home, a lot of the comments are actually claiming the the Phillipines are the better country. It does seem like they have much in common though.

Yep, they're pretty much the same but the Philippines really has little chance of developing to a first world country... Also, the second link's replies are mostly made by Filipinos so there are pretty much biases and unfair judgement there.
