Does the EG world physically exist? What is its ontological nature?

In other words, when you go through the mirror, do you actually transport to another, physical world, or is the world perhaps entirely within the mirror itself?  How do we define its existence (ontology)?

I've thought that maybe it's the later, but then how do you animate the inhabitants of the EG world?

I subscribe to the multiverse theory. The "Ask Jappleack" tumblr touched on this some.

EQG is in it's own universe, pony Equestria is in it's own universe and the mirror is a gateway between the two.

Okay, so you're saying EQG is a physical universe distinct from Equestria.  Is EQG supposed to represent our real life universe or is it different from that?  I always thought that it was different from ours.

My thinking on the mirror was something akin to the Nexus in Star Trek Generations, but I don't think the idea fully works out.

I consider it to be representative of our universe. There are some features of the animation style (hair and skin colour notably) and elements of the plot that make it an unrealistic representation of our universe. But I consider it to be representative of our universe all the same.

Much like how the world depicted in, say, Forrest Gump is supposed to be our world, even though some details of the representation are inaccurate.

I just find it easier to say it's similar but not the exact same as our universe to make the unrealistic parts easier to deal with.  It's almost a semantic difference really.

Well, in the comics the mirror is apparently even more impressive in that there exists one that pretty much operates like a Stargate and allows you to enter co-ordinates to other worlds. With that being said, the EQG universe is basically a parallel universe lying somewhere between the pony universe and our universe. It's our world in just about every way, except that its inhabitants are parallel doubles to Equestria and the mirror is nothing more than a gateway between the two worlds.

The EQG Universe is connected to The Pony universe by the mirror. I'm going to assume that the mirror is actually a wormhole but since it doesn't seem that Ponies know what wormholes are they, just call it a "Magic Mirror". It's kind of like if I dont know why this happens, than its because of some wizard type of belief.

I don't think it's our universe, I think it's some sick and twisted hybrid of our universe and the MLP universe. Or something ;)

I want to read up on that.  Do you know which issues?

That would be the Reflections arc, issues #17-20. Though the mirror itself is only really touched upon for most of #17 and the beginning of issue #18 and is subsequently destroyed by the end.

If you'd like the cliff notes instead (as the Reflection Arc is in my opinion the worst arc of the comics), then here:

I stopped reading your post after this because I just finished #16 a few days ago.  I want to read it first.

Yeah, sorry about that. I may have gotten a tad carried away...I've hidden everything behind a spoiler if you want to come back to it later.

Thanks, I will once I finish reading the comic.

I think the world behind the mirror does really exist. The mirror would form a portal between Equestria and the other world. I do believe that the mirror is capable of connecting to other worlds besides the EQG world though.

Well, I finally finished reading the comic.  I just kept forgetting about it.  Your cliff notes pretty much sums it all up.  So basically, there are many, if not infinite other worlds that the mirror can connect to.  These worlds exist, but in other dimensions.  It's sorta like Sliders.  Thanks for telling me the issues the arc appears in, which by the way, I can see why people don't like it.  I didn't care for the shipping.

I assume that the Equestria Girls universe is parallel to Equestria itself. Not really an alternate universe, but one that reflects the prime universe in many aspects.

Okay, so then regular Equestria is EQ Prime.  Canterlot High Equestria is some different Equestria, one of many or even infinite possible alternates the mirror or one like it, could connect to, all of which are variations of the main EQ Prime.  They are reflections of EQ Prime.

Yes, that is what I'm saying.

That could mean then that there's an Equestria where certain chance things didn't happen.  Then, there could be an Equestria where Rainbow Dash was never able to do her Sonic Rainboom at the best young flyers competition and therefore failed to save Rarity and the Wonderbolts, unless somehow that event is immutable.

Those are alternate universes not parallel universes.

I don't think I properly know the difference then.  How is something an alternate universe and/or a parallel universe?

It's subjective. To me a parallel universe reflects certain aspects of another universe (like how the EQ universe has human equivalents to the ponies. An alternate universe would be where something happened differently to change the events of history.

So why, then, does a parallel universe reflect certain aspects and not others?
