2nd attempt with charcoal drawing...

Don't give up!! :yay: This looks far better than what I'd probably make with them, and actually, the smudges seem to complement this in some way; considering how N.R's meant to be linked with the dark, it makes sense to have the darkness around her like here :) And even if you don't want the smudges, I know you can get over them with time and practice; you've had a great start with them, so I'd love to see what your later attempts would look like :squee:

I think the best question to ask is what don't you like about this piece?  I just would hate to see you give up when you seem to have such a great start.

For a second attempt by using a somewhat tricky medium, I think you did quite well with this one and far better than what I could pull off with my firsts attempts.  The line work is smooth and solid, depicting the character quite well.  I'm not sure if the smudging was intentional or not, but I think it still works well here nonetheless.  The only thing that I feel you could do to add onto this is perhaps add a bit more shading, particularly within the curls of the hair.

The only suggestion I could make is to not be afraid to make mistakes.  Mistakes are there to help you learn and better yourself, to help you grow both as an artist to become more familiar with the medium.  Charcoal can be quite a lot of fun once you get used to it and is especially so when you start using it for shading and such, so don't give up and just keep practicing.  And most importantly: have fun!

I'd say keep at it don't give up just because your first or second piece didn't turn out like you saw it in your head, my first drawing was okay at best but I took the initiative and advice people gave me and kept applying it to my drawings and with every one I could see improvements. Charcoal is a tricky little thing to master and getting the right contrast between your lights and darks is what you need to practice to make this pic really pop but your lines look great. You just need practice take some time and do a less serious drawing and practice shading with charcoal I know I still need lots of practice with my drawings shading is the hardest part for me right now but I feel myself getting better.

And most importantly of all have fun with it, I know drawing for me is a stress reliever and I also find it peaceful and relaxing too I hope this helps.  ^_^

Wha? Why would you give up on charcoal drawing?  :( This piece is epic! The smudging and such around the head compliments the picture well and their's suitable detail on Nightmare Rarity's features  :P Don't give up hope! The charcoal drawings can continue!

The drawing is amazing! The only thing it may need is, as Sky said, a little bit more of shading.

Charcoal isn't easy to master, and seeing that this is just your second attempt shows that you're very talented. I highly encourage you to keep trying until you feel comfortable with it, and even if you don't, I can assure you that it will still look great.
