The Washington Post has acknowledged us

Today in the Washington Post, one of my local newspapers, there was an article in the style section on bronies. It wasn't anything new, really, just explaining to the public about us. It mentioned Equestria Daily, the characters, interviewed some local bronies...I geeked out, guys.

We are taking over. Here's an excerpt below:

"About 50 people have gathered in the Martin Luther King Jr. Library auditorium to watch and discuss the latest episode of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic'. The event is a meet-up of D.C.-area 'bronies' : adult men-and some women-who follow the animated show religiously."

So, there are bronies around me. YES! Someday, I will meet them. Someday, I shall go to these elusive meet-ups and finally talk to them in person. ONE DAY, MY PONIES, ONE DAY!

Nah, but seriously, this is amazing. I love you, Washington Post <3

The newspapers have been kind to bronies thus far for the most part, it's the TV stations who are being the bullies *glares menacingly at Fox News*

We follow the show religiously?

Bronyism IS a religion then...All hail our new goddesses, Celestia and Luna!

I was gonna go to this meet up, but something happened and I couldn't go. I swear, one of these days I simply will be able to be there.

Great to see that we are getting some positive media attention, though.

Whoa. Although I'm a little suspicious about the wording "religiously" (which implies that the fans are creepily obsessed with it when there's varying levels of liking), I'm glad to see a news outlet (outside of the internet) actually acknowledge the fanbase in a relatively well-comported way.

I was sure they were gonna be like Fox News, but I guess not everyone is a moron. I don't like the word religously in this situation. We don't worship the ponies, we just love 'em :). Makes us sound like diehard fanboys of the show

I'm with everyone else in this thread that doesn't quite like the way that they used the term "religiously". It just seems like they use this term to try and paint bronies as being some kind of weird cult.

As you say, there are many levels of liking something. The highest level is complete obsession, and I do not think that most community members are that far out. To me, its kinda like with Star Trek and Star Wars fans. There are a lot of them out there, but very few are actually weirdly obsessed.

By the way, if anyone else wants to read the original story, then you might be able to get to it using this link:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/dc-bronies-feel-the-love-and-friendship-of-my-little-pony/2012/04/06/gIQAajwc0S_story_1.html

The article actually wasn't too bad, but with the author writing stuff like this:

a stuffed pony — known as a “plushie”

Really? A plushie is just a stuffed animal. This is not some new concept connected with bronies.

(A brohoof is like a fist bump. A fist bump is like . . . oh, forget it.)

For goodness sake, a fist bump does not require explaining. Even someone as boring as me knows that.

Maybe I'm nitpicking, but quotes like those make it seem that the author was reaching for anything that they could use to portray bronies as being "different" somehow. From what I have seen, bronies are, in general, one of the more boring fandoms out there today...

I agree that the term "religiously" is a bit out of place, but at least it's not completely negative. It's not making bronies out to be some weird cult made up of social dropouts, but a group of people with similar interests and the will to follow and embrace that interest within a sub-community we have created. And, when you really think about it sometimes, we do wait for the next episode like it's the coming of a deity , but who doesn't for a new show?

The misuse of the term religiously does raise a point though. Although bronies aren't seen as a major part of modern society (and let's face it, were not, maybe modern culture, but not society) we are still people and they could be a bit more considerate when referring to us. But hey! What do we care. We were in the Washington Friggin Post! Huh!

I agree with what the others have said. This article is really awesome for the fact that it actually paints us in a positive light, but I don't really agree with the use of "religiously". We just really love the show, we don't actually worship the characters. I'm sure that somewhere out there are a few extreme cases that do, but in no way does that small number include all of us.
