gaming Amiibos taken too seriously?

Nintendo sure has made a lot of money on those things, but do you think people are taking amiibos way too seriously?

I mean, they're just plastic toys sitting on top of a trophy like scanner that scans into games and are pretty much made to serve with games. Yeah, I understand people use them for collection reasons and there is a big trend of "toy photography" with them going around, but all these scalpers and people literally hunting for them. The release of Greninja and Pacman here in America, people LITERALLY CAMPED outside of toys R us for a small toy.

No I am not hating on them because I have a few myself. I do use them for gaming and just because they're pretty cool, but people are like dedicating their lives to these things. Yes, there are scalpers of pretty much anything, but its just ridiculous. I know some tend to me more rare than others but my god. I have Princess Rosalina who is considered very rare and was given to me by a friend because he is generous and doesn't believe in scalping. I get people practically begging me or getting jealous cause I have her. I just laugh and say "calm down".

What do you think?

The issue is, if you want them all or even just the ones you like, you HAVE to take them seriously or you don't get them. I'd have loved a Ness amiibo, but that looks like it'll never happen, which sucks. If I don't pre-order and go Amiibo hunting, I'll NEVER get to have it, so it comes down to all or nothing. And I'd rather not have nothing if I can help it.

That being said, I have about 15 of them now and never paid above retail price for any, besides Meta Knight who I payed to get shipped.

What Barbaloot said.

If you want a certain Amiibo, you literally have to be at the site before they open up to get them or they'll sell in seconds. It's ridiculous, especially for characters like Ness

But personally the difficulty of getting any that isn't a Mario character(minus Rosalina, she's just as difficult as everyone else) along with the undersupplying and goddamn scalpers have turned me off from Amiibo. I'll probably buy one someday, though it'll probably be if I find one I want out of sheer luck(Captain Falcon, Rosalina, Lucina, etc)

I have a friend that posts about these amiibos everytime he gets one which is kinda often. They look like nice figures. Didn't know they was made by Nintendo I thought they was just licensed out to a lot of things.

Someone mentioned games with these.. Umm wut? Sry for my stupidity. ^^ I don't keep up with gaming news like I should out since it's getting to be like World News.

I think people take them so seriously because they're so rare- depending on what amiibo you get. For example, the one I truly want- Little Mac- is 42$ on Ebay or 36$ (plus 13$ shipping) on Amazon. :/ So when people can actually afford to shell out money for the particularly rare ones, it sort of stop being a toy and becomes more of a collector's item.

Part of the issue is that the demand far outweighs the supply, and is negatively influenced by scalpers. So you have people really desperate to be one of the few who can get one. It's just a shame that they're so hard to get, and that some people are taking advantage of that.

...not here in Aus though. I can find them pretty easily. :3

My only, lonely amiibo:

When a popular toy becomes hard to find, it ceases to be a toy anymore.  Prices increase several times over, only certain sellers carry them (omigosh, AMIIBOZ_4_LESS haz the Marth amiibo - SQUEE), and only the people that really want them end up with them.  I would have liked a Pit amiibo, but I have no intention of paying $40+ for one.  I might still snag a Samus, Star Fox, Link, and Yoshi at some point.  Unless they, too, quadruple in price.

In a way, yes, but I can see why some people want them so badly. They are really awesome looking collectibles as well as toys that can interact with some of our favorite current Nintendo titles, it just sucks that Nintendo is seemingly feeding off that desire. I will never understand why they don't supply to meet the demand, that is the whole point, or at least it should be. Unless there are shortages. I do think some could take it way too seriously, but I cannot say I blame them too much and I have no interest in the Amiibo's at this point.

Some of those are so hard to track down. I only have Mario and Pikachu. I really want Pit, Villager, Ness, and Lucario but they are like sold out everywhere. The only ones I've seen in stores are the typical Mario, Luigi, Link, Peach Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Diddy Kong, Bowser, Samus, and Pikachu. I hope I don't pass on the upcoming Lucas and Mewtwo amiibos.

As far as models go the Amiibos are really poorly made. I don't really understand their appeal in any way. Their usage in terms of games is incredibly gimmicky, and in terms of models they are mediocre.

I really did want a Lucina one, actually, but I couldn't even preorder it because it was gone within seconds.

The whole limited-run rarity aspect of the figures is upsetting to me. This is beanie babies all over again. What's fun about that?

Those lego skylandermiibos coming out soon look pretty good though.
