Why do people think if you say something bad about a country you're racist?

I find it ridiculous that people scream RACIST!!!! When you say something about a country. Like if someone says how Americans are fat that is not racist(No I don't think all Americans are fat also I am a American so no need to get offended) What do you think about this? Have you ever been around someone who said you were racist for saying something about a country?

I honestly don't know. People always feel some kind of patriotism towards they're country which I don't understand. I live in Northern Ireland and I always make fun of it.

When I laugh at a country, I'm not laughing at the country. I'm laughing at the ridiculous OTT stereotypes that have been made about that country

Haha, you don;t really get this at all in the UK!

UK people love to moan, especially about how bad the country is! We may be patriotic on the inside but defiantly not on the outside (barring sporting events).

Is your favourite colour green or orange...? ;)

As someone living the the republi, I always make fun of Ireland and Irish people. Generally I adopt a thick, culchie accent to add to it.

Well, most stereotypes are based off of some degree of truth. Americans have a higher chance of being over weight than other countries, Russians have a high rate of alcoholism (with their most popular drink being vodka), and the French haven't won any modern wars (although, people tend to ignore the major role they've played as allies and exactly how much they've done for other countries during modern wars).

As long as you aren't actually judging someone for it (like meeting somepony with a Russian accent and thinking he or she is an alcoholic before you get to know them), it isn't racist.

But to answer the question as to why, it's because we've become oversensitive to it. Racism is a bad thing, obviously, but once the playing field starts to level out, many people still see a certain group of people as oppressed, just because they've been oppressed for so long. People tend not to know how to do anything but fight for these previously oppressed people, and now that there are no more figurative "dragons to slay"so to speak, things just keep going farther and farther until we have the culture we have today... Where simply stating a fact is seen as racist.

But don't take it too personally, because no matter what you say, SOMEONE out there is gonna find a way to be offended by it. And if they do get offended by what you say when you mean no harm, that's their own problem to work out within themselves, not yours to feel guilty over.

Because today people have taken political correctness to a staggering and worrying level. Social justice warriors are omnipresent these days and damn near everything you say can probably be interpreted as an insult against some minority. Lately I've seen an alarming number of words with '-ist' at the end of them, usually followed by the asinine phrase "check your privileges". It's my fear that people like that will eventually cause the downfall of society.

My bottom line is that people are taking everything personally, and way too seriously. If they'd just relax a bit there'd be a lot less hassle.

personally I hate anyone who hates America..... but never had I called someone racist for hating America even when they aren't American.... nor have I ever heard someone call someone a racist for hating any country..... as for stereotyping the people of any nation..... a lot of people confuse that for racism.... calling an American fat is a stereotype because it is true a lot of Americans are fat but not all of us.... much like saying the English have bad teeth or the Russians are obsessed with vodka....

the definition of racism is the belief that a race is inferior to your race....

now that I have spent a good 20 minutes trying to type this post.... hopefully this makes sense

I have said countless times that i do not agree with the legitimacy of the State of Israel. That being said i don't hate Jews and I'm not Anti-Semitic. But people often feel if you have this view it makes you racist. There are Jews who burn the Israeli flag because they have the same view i do. It is in their own religious text that Israel wont be returned to them until the return of the Messiah. I am anti Zionist not anti Jew. Before WWII all that is Israel was called .... Palestine.

Just because you have an opinion doesn't make you racist. However there are things you CAN say that are. I recall a debate here on the fourms where someone said "no country in Africa is civilized". Yet every year Americans, Canadians and Brits flock to South Africa in droves.
