Where did Spike come from?

As we all know, Twilight acquired Spike after hatching him in her entrance exam to the "School of Gifted Unicorns" as shown in :"The Cutie Mark Chronicles"

 

My question is, how exactly did the school acquire a dragon egg in the first place? I recall in "Dragon Quest", Twilight tells Spike that there isn't much information on dragons because they're too rare and fearsome to study. So how could they possibly get their hands on one of their unhatched young?

Maybe it's an exchange program and there's a pony somewhere growing up with dragons.

Also, if they're too rare to study, whose idea was it to take one of the few dragon eggs they have had access to and use it as an entrance test for the school?

It definitely raises a ton of questions and no answers for sure. Who were his parents originally then? It all begs an answer. Dare I say, a backstory? That would be pretty cool to see in Season 5. Or even some parental reunion eventually. Oh the feels that would make.

 

If his parents are even alive, in which case maybe Spike was an orphan egg, but that still begs the question of where egg-Spike was originally from, I don't think we have any info on that at this point.

I've my own headcanon on that but according to Celestia Spike's egg was abandoned. I do like how they keep Celestia just as clueless as the rest.

If there is one story element that could give Spike some more depth it would be this one.

 

In any case I'd say that either the egg was abandoned, or it was given to Celestia by either a friendly dragon or by another pony.

I don't think that Spike was abandoned as others have suggested, since I don't think Hasbro would go that far. If Hasbro were to ever explain that, they would most definitely make it something soft ^^. I believe that the egg just got lost and ponies found it and it was given to the Princess or school which Twilight attended.

"Well, we're a school. We could study it, learn as much as we can about dragons to fill in our limited knowledge of them..."

 

"Meh, sounds like a lot of work. Just see if one of the new applicants can hatch it or something."

 

"Ooh, it'll be like a test! So exciting!"

Hmmm I wonder where I thought the egg was abandoned. Re-watched how Twilight got her cutie mark but absolutely no clue. But it seems being able to hatch an egg is entry level magic or something.

Perhaps they had some Dragon DNA and genetically spliced it into the egg of another species. Jurassic Park style. This would also explain why Spike isn't like other dragons we have seen.

 

As far as Twilight hatching said egg. Maybe the test wasn't supposed to see if she could actually hatch the egg, and was a test to see how she handled failure. The egg was thought by the testing board to be un-hatchable, but then Twi went and hatched it. That would explain Princess Celistia statement that she had never seen a unicorn with Twilights raw magic ability before. Then Twi got her cutie mark and Celistia recognized it as the symbol she had seen on the tree of harmony, and knew that Twilight was the chosen one.

I've seen some fan fics that the school deliberately sets students one supposedly unsolvable problem to see how they react.  In support of this, I point out they had 3 ponies taking notes.  This would hardly be necessary if she was really expected to hatch it.

I bet Spike is a prodigal son of a very respected dragon that got stolen when he was still a hatchling...

Well in dragon quest none of the dragons are seen with their parents, so maybe in Equestria dragons work like some insects where they lay eggs and just abandon them or something.

Reminder of the Sonic Rainboom episode where he was hatched as a tiny dragon by Twilight during her test.

 

Maybe he was thieved from his original dragon-family for Celestia's school to use as a teaching tool. How unfortunate, he probably doesn't and never will know his dragon family.

Seriously though I probably imagine that his dragon parents were killed by the Equestrian Army because they were threatening the safety of ponies in a village near their cave and Spike was in one of the eggs in their cave. Therefore his egg was handed over to Celestia's school for research.

Daring Do acquired a dragon egg on her very first adventure after a dare from Princess Celestia. She and Celestia traded and Daring Do got the Alicorn Amulet. A few years later she sold it to a curio dealer for some serious bits.
