What MLP Fanart and Crossovers Could Non-Bronies Find Appealing?

First and foremost, aside from pictures, fan art could also include soundtracks.

OK then, fan art is something we all enjoy as bronies because it puts a bit of the show into something that isn't official. However, a lot of the fan art out there appeal to us by using our attachments to the show, the MLP universe, the characters or its memes (Scootaloo is a chicken).

Non-bronies on the other hand, lack this context. Pony art is just... art. Could be fantasy art, could be furry art. If non-bronies are going to find pony art appealing, it's going to come from the artwork's own merits.

For crossovers it's somewhat of a different thing. That is, for the fanbase of the franchise being crossed over with, those fans could find appeal in whatever elements of their franchise (the media, the universe, lore, characters and memes) is depicted in the crossover. Depending on the execution, it could be cool for both sides or it could come across as weird.

Here are some examples.

This one is a Green Lantern crossover that someone really liked:

This picture may be clever to us but the "joke" if you will is lost on non-brony Legend of Zelda fans:

This is what I think is an example of pony art that can stand strong by only its own artistic merits. That is to say, not knowing who the ponies are and judging them only by how they fit into the overall picture as well as their designs:

This could pass as good furry art for the unbeknownst:

So now tell me, what do you believe could make a given pony fan art more capable of being appreciated or praised by non-bronies who know nothing about the show or characters?

Turnabout Storm. I'd say Fallout Equestria, but you'd need to know the show pretty well.

That's a major turn-off for non-bronies.

I've found a very good Legend of Zelda crossover pic that I think Non-Brony LoZ fans can enjoy.

It's easily identifiable as Ghirahim and I think it pays good tribute to him.

For example, I wanted to try something like this, so my friend helped me to draw a Game of Thrones referenced pony picture. I have showned to a few people(not my friends but some of my relatives who didn't know I like the show) and the feedbacks were positive, even from the guy who hates MLP.

I think, showing a picture to non-bronies has a critical point: presentation. If you show them something, referring their favorite show the reaction can be:

- Oh it's quiet nice man.

- What is this disgraceful picture about my show?

It's just my opinion, but according to the fact that people usually thinks that MLP is unmanly, showing a picture about a battle for example could make the person more acceptable with that or some funny but crazy stuff like: a picture about Pinkamena.

I suppose an artstyle that seems completely different from that of the show, yet has an obvious quality would likely appeal to them. Just a few examples...

I would show the second picture for sure.

What about humanized art? And I don't mean EqG "humanized."

For us, it's clearly Fluttershy but non-bronies would only see it as a pretty and nicely dressed girl enjoying the flowers.

Again, obvious for us, it is Fluttershy but what would a non-brony see? I guess an anime fan would find this good, if just intriguing.

The thing about crossovers though is that a lot of people dislike trying to take characters from outside MLP and giving them the pony makeover. That might give someone an even more negative impression. The best solution I think would be to experiment with different artstyles with content only from the show itself and see whichever one appeals the most to someone who isn't a brony.

Here's one anecdote. Make of it what you will.

To me, what I think it comes down to is whether or not the crossover pays tribute to the other franchise. Let me recall this example:

Do you know what makes me think this is a good crossover pic? Not only does it look very fitting of the character but the pic exudes a very similar presence. So I guess you could say it comes down to how relatable the crossover content is and how much tribute to the other franchise it pays.

Everyone has their own preferences and the same approach won't work for everyone. I've seen some people hate the idea of one of their favorite characters becoming a pony and that it would only turn them away farther from the show, but as you've just shown, people also like the idea. Just understand that using crossovers to persuade people to like the show could also backfire, even if it works more often than not.

That's a great version of Ghirahim, btw. I agree, he looks good as a pony. ^_^

I'm stuck? My brain isn't coming up with an answer?

I've been a brony for two months and my taste in art hasn't changed one bit? So what I 'would/would-have' considered good is still me saying "that is excellent."

Good thread though. It made me think. In this case it made me think that becoming a brony hasn't changed the way I feel about some things. It has been a great chance to see a lot more and a chance to do a lot more.

I've only traveled from scifi and furry though, so not a huge leap :)

I could actually see a case made for Turnabout Storm, as I've seen many Ace Attorney fans who even said they dislike MLP said it was really great

Actually, that isn't really the intention nor are such art brought up in such a context. Look back in my earlier post that linked to another forum. The thread was the place's MLP thread. Very non-intrusive.

I'm sorry if I gave off the implication that I thought the people used in your example were being intrusive. That wasn't my intention, but I have to disagree with you when you say that crossover art is never brought up in this particular context. What I've said before about using crossover fanart to convince others to like the show can happen and more likely than not has happened. Two or more people don't even have to be involved. Someone doesn't even have to show someone else the crossover fanart. They could unintentionally find it themselves during a google images search of a character they like or something along those lines and form an opinion of the show and its fans from that. That's not necessarily a good way to form an opinion about MLP, but the point is that it happens anyway. And like I've said before, it all depends on the person's preferences. I've seen people like crossovers like that and I've also seen people absolutely hate the idea.
