movies/tv Japanese or English Dubs?

I don't watch a lot of anime (all though I am starting to watch more) so I don't have a lot of say in this.

But if the movie or show has quality dubbing such as Funimation or the english dubs for Studio Ghibli films I will watch it in english.

But if the show hasn't been shown in america yet and I don't want to wait to long then I will watch with english subtitles.   The same goes for if there is an english dub, but I just don't like it and think that it's of poor quality.

Japanese. Always. I really don't understand why people wouldn't want to watch with the original voices, it's a mystery to me. Then again, I live in Sweden where nothing ever gets dubbed except bad commercials for imported products.

Anyway, I think Japanese is a very かっこいい language so even if I were used to dubbed stuff I wouldn't want to change.

I'm the opposite. I honestly never understood why having the original voices was so important. Being in a language you understand is far more important to me. I'd go so far as to say that what voice actors are used is barely relevant and they could use Hilary Haag in the place of Michelle Ruff and I wouldn't care. (Note: The two have completely different sounding voices where Ruff is deeper and Haag works better with bouncy characters.)

Heh. I wasn't familiar with that word. :twi:

かっこいい, ka tsu ko i i or "kakkoii" means cool, sort of.

Because usually dubbed voices makes no sense at all as the characters are Japanese and therefore should speak their own language. This is not only for anime but everything, when some characters are from a certain country they should speak the language that is used in that country, otherwise it loses its credibility, even if it is a fantasy story or a cartoon. For example, when I watched the WW2 movie Valkyrie, I really really wanted to like it. It was quite well made and entertaining but I just couldn't like it because they were speaking english when the film took place in germany. Hitler speaking english to his own men was the most ridiculous thing ever. This film was not dubbed but the use of the wrong language made me dislike the film instead of liking it. Same goes for a lot of other American movies, they always use english in movies where the characters are supposed to speak another language. This sort of pisses me off.

Anyway, another reason is that it just looks goofy. It is animated to be synced with japanese so when english is used instead it looks "fake" and odd. Especially since you know that they should speak japanese. It's feels like watching a fandub even if the voice actors are really good. Also, as I mentioned in my earlier post a lot of us just like the language. I'd say that like 1/4 of the reason to why I even watch anime in the first place is because I like japanese.

I'm just gonna list this as one of the things that I cannot ever understand. To me, being able to understand what they're saying is of utmost importance.

Of course understanding what they say is most important, but you can do this with subtitles. Then you will

  • hear the anime with the original voices as it's suppose to be
  • learn the language
  • realize how much better it looks

None of this is even remotely appealing to me and trying to keep up with subtitles while trying to watch everything else is annoying. I'd rather be watching every little thing on the screen.

And I actually like the English voice actors more than any Japanese ones. They sound infinitely better to me.

While some english dubs are atrocious, there are good ones. Japanese are the same.

Alright then.. But I think using subtitles is something you have to get used to. I do not get distracted at all and I can easily follow what happens in what I'm watching while reading the subtitles. Then again, as I mentioned in my first post I've read subtitles since I were young because everything gets subbed instead of dubbed in Sweden. ..So reading subtitles is something I'm used to and have been doing a lot.

About the english actors I strongly disagree. Though, I've only seen 3 dubbed animes and it's not really about the actors. Good or not, I just want the original voices.
