Much like the show, the comics have its good and bad comics(though, imo the Main series have been pretty bad lately, though the Friends Forever has been consistently good)

Just avoid the Rainbow Dash Micro at all costs. Please

I would highly recommend them; though it is adviseable that you do some research and see if any certain issue or arcs are ones you want to purchase. As stated the quality can vary; though what's good is usually REALLY good, IMO.

The Reflections Arc is definitely worth picking up. It's also sad that King Sombra, the arguably worst villain in the show, has one of the better backstories in the comics XD

The comics are pretty great in my opinion. I actually collect them.
But like some other people already said, there are some bad chapters.

I have actually only read the first series and half of the second series but I have been collecting more of them, I am very, very behind. From the research I have done and from what I have read though, I HIGHLY recommend giving the comics a look. The art styles in them are amazing and the amount of variety is wonderful. The stories are great too from what I have read. I would do what others have said and do a bit of research on the different story arcs and find some that might be of interest to you and start there perhaps. :) There is a lot to choose from. :3

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't normally really go for comics, but a few of the posts on here had gotten me interested to give a few of them a go, and the ones I have read are actually really good!

I'd also recommend the Reflections story arc and Sombra's backstory (Fiendship is magic), as well as Luna's Microseries, Chrysalis's backstory, Friends Forever issue 3 (I think it's 3 - it's the Celestia and Spike issue) and The Return of Queen Chrysalis :)

I downloaded a bundle of a lot of comics a while back and still haven't gotten around to reading most of them. I think I should go to the store to pick up physical copies. It just feels different holding something in your hands.

Well, they kind of deleted sombra as he was and rewrote him completely for the comics XD

He more or less just has his shadow form in common with his show self.

I love all of the ones I read, the art is more beautiful than the show by a thousandfold, with amazing hand drawn covers and art. And not to mention that the writing is fantastic. Think of the comics as sort of an official fanfic. (And I'm not saying that in a bad way whatsoever) yes, I recommend them.

A lot of people seem to dislike the comics, so I was a little hesitant to try them. That said, I've ready volumes 1-6 of the mane series, all of the micro series and the first two volumes of the Friends Forever series, and I can honestly say that there are only two issues I disliked. One is the most fashionable to rip one and that's Rainbow Dash's Micro Issue, but I think it's still worth reading as it's an excellent conversation piece, largely because most people dislike it, but for their own reasons. It's kind of a strange phenomenon that is worth experiencing for yourself. I also don't care much for Friends Forever Issue 1, but that's mostly because it's not the issue that was advertised.

If you want my honest recommendation, I'd say to start reading the issues in canon order, and go from there. It's easy to start as issues 1-12 come before every other issue. I'd follow those up with the Micro Series, then issues 13-16, then Friends Forever 1-4, and then alternate between the mane series and FF every four issues until you get to the more recent ones in the mane series where I've heard that issue 32 and 33 form an arc. As someone who collects the series in graphic novel form, that's a little disconcerting, but I'm sure we'll see how the volumes are handled going forward. My guess is that will be the first arc to be broken up, but we'll see. If you're reading the comics in digital form that shouldn't be a problem.
