Does anybody tend to be not so into "What music or what book do you like" topics

Not saying that its bad to share interests etc. Its more in terms if you distracted or like, sell your personality to somebody else. Lets say  "You read a book". Then a topic asks "What book are you reading" and then you post answer and say this book. And then you're kinda distracted when you read your awesome book later on. Maybe Twilight know what to do, maybe because she has already read them instead of saying it while she reads a book. I dunno. What do you think?.

And also in terms of music, i guess genre seems less personal, but saying certain songs might give too much personal information about yourself. I guess its because i feel insecure about sharing them on the net. With friends no probs. But thats just me.

What do you guys think?

I personally don't think that it is a bad thing, I have been in a PM conversation with a member on these forums about music, and we have been sharing some of our favourite bands and recommending others on what the other has said. It is because of this conversation that I have been introduced to a band which is quickly becoming one of my favourites  :)

I think those sorts of threads and convos on here can help to introduce you to new things, and sometimes you might find a gem that you wouldn't have otherwise.

But that's just me, each to their own.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of personal information could be gained from knowing what songs someone likes?

Well its more yourself. I mean in some case it feels like you sell yourself sometimes. I dunno. Maybe its selfish reasons that one wishes to keep for the moment, but temptations just wont let it. Its like facebook, you gotta share everything fear that i have. Because i have bad memories from it.

That's fair enough, I think it probably depends on what you share more than anything - I guess if it is a thread about book/music/film etc recommendations there is probably nothing to fear, as you aren't really giving them any more than they are giving you (I mean, the thing that people could most easily try to use to 'attack' me would be MLP, but that is kinda already out in the open here on this site  ).

I dont have a problem with those threads, I do dislike the 'rate the song posted above' thread sometimes  :) I mean, a lot of the time, people post a song they particularly like and it is a little off-putting if the next commenter leaves a pretty poor score or says anything distasteful about the track  :wat:

I don't bother sharing that kind of stuff with anybody. Last thing I need is someone saying that they can relate to me or want to discuss music and books with me.

I don't want your friendship, go away.

I just share the things I like. If others roll on that, kudos to them - it just means we can relate to more stuff together. Yay!  :P

For instance, me and have a shared love for Massive Attack  :squee:

I don't like using services like last.fm that tell others what I listen to, but I don't mind sharing a few tracks I listen to on here.

If for some reason a song you that you listen to is very personal, then you can choose not to share it on those threads.

They're are way too many "what is your favorite x?" threads. I think they are boring and unoriginal.

I made a meta "What is your favorite..." thread.

I think those threads are the cash crabs of Mlp forums. They clog out the actually thought provoking threads like Govermental type of Equestria, or threads explaining plot holes, and stuff like that.

Because it seems no one wants to have an actual discussion, they just want to post something to post it. Seriously, how many people actually read other peoples favorites, instead of just posting their own and leaving?

I personally dislike being asked what my favourite book/movie/show/song, etc. is, but that's because there's almost always too many to decide on just one.

Seriously, how many people actually read other peoples favorites, instead of just posting their own and leaving?

I do that, sometimes, out of curiosity. Then again, i'm just an oddball. x3

Lets say  "You read a book". Then a topic asks "What book are you reading" and then you post answer and say this book. And then you're kinda distracted when you read your awesome book later on.

1. Why is "You read a book" in quotes? They're not exactly necessary in that instance, but oh well.

2. Distracted with what, exactly?

3. I don't think you're obligated to post an answer to a thread just because you saw it. Only make a post if you genuinely want to.

saying certain songs might give too much personal information about yourself.

I can see where one might be uncomfortable sharing a song that they feel a personal or emotional tie to, but you're not obligated to share those if you don't want to. Either way, most people wouldn't think to overanalyze it and would take it as just "Oh, they like that song. Cool." Edited by Mint Drop

I don't mind those kinds of topics; I actually like when I find someone who is interested in a similar thing that I am. :)

I also still don't understand how personal information about someone can be gained from a song that they like. I mean, even if you post a song that you have personal or emotional ties to, people won't know that you have ties to that song unless you actually mention that.

I actually enjoy those topics mainly because it is a good way to discover new things in a particular medium, whether it be a new good book or a new band or anything in between.

I have to agree with Kyoshi here, i've discovered new music and films from these style of threads.

I do find that there are two types of people who post in them though, the "This is what i like nothing else" People who have no interest in what anyone else has to say, and the people who post who have a genuine interest in sharing things other people may like and finding other things they may like. :)

It's not really a bad thing, except for specifics sometimes.

Like if someone keeps asking the same question repeatedly. That's when it starts to bother me.

For example:

"What's your favorite song?"
"I listen to a lot of music, so to be honest I don't have a specific favorite"

[Two days later]

"What's your favorite song?"

"...I listen to a lot of music, so I don't really have a favorite song."

[A few days later]

"What's your favorite song?"

"I listen to a log of music from various genre and origin, I don't have a favorite song because I enjoy many different ones."

[Another day or two later]

"What's your favorite song?"
"....Still don't have a favorite song in specific."

Wanting to get to know someone is fine, but repeatedly asking a specific question just makes me feel like I'm being pressured into giving details even when I don't have the particular details to give. It just becomes bothersome after a while.

"What is your favorite song?" and then a link to a Youtube video. Do I press the play button? It is so easy to do, but I might not do it. I used to, but I realize I don't share most of that. So make it a 1000 times more boring and ask "What is you favorite book?" and I probably skip the topic completely.

I want to get into music, but I'm afraid that I might embarrass myself from liking one artist for just one day then losing interest the next, or enjoy somebody that is considered a bad musician by others. I don't even have a favourite song, or know which song is sung by this artist, or have a good ear to listen to lyrics. I'll like genres, but that's about it.

Idk, the world of music is just too big. :maud:
