Should Spike be written out of FiM?

No, but the idiots who write the Spike episodes need to be smacked around until they promise to stop writing garbage episodes just because they're Spike centered.

I really think the writers struggle from maintaining a sense of Spike's generally best characterization (childish but precociously intelligent and a lazy troll) when they write him into an episode of his own because they feel the need to purposely dumb him down to make the given lesson of the episode work, which is lazy writing. But duh, it's not like they're trying too hard, it's a damn kids show. A good one, but a kids show at the end of the day. What I'd hope to see is either some better writing or pulling back on the Spike episodes and focusing on developing him solely as a supporting cast character. We already have the CMC for decently written 'younger crowd issues' episodes... But that does remove the main point of reference for young boys, who are becoming a strong minority part of the audience. Ugh. I really just want my boy Spike to get some good eps.

Are you joking? It made Spike look like a giant dillhole (which was already done with the greed episode), and made Canterlots residence complete idiots. Spike was power tripping, and the other ponies needed to ask Twilight to do damn near anything...not to mention ignoring the other three princesses.

Yeah but it was funny tho.

Can you name three good Spike episodes?

I couldn't tell you. I wouldn't consider any Spike episodes to be "good". Equestria Games and Infestation Manifestation are okay in my book. Even though Spike At Your Service is the worst of the bunch, Dragon Quest disappointed me the most. If there was an episode where you could cash in on Spike's character potential, that was the episode.

As the others were saying, S1 and S2 Spike was better, he had some good laughs. After that, Spike episodes become...pretty weak and boring. Would love to see him grow out into a smexy dragon in the end :muffins:

But would many be sad if he were written out? I can't imagine him being that popular.

I think that depends on if they replace him or they just write him out and don't replace him. To be honest, he's probably the one reoccuring character in the show you could write out and the main characters wouldn't be that affected. Again love Spike but I'll admit to his current stance in the show.

Spike helped save the Crystal Empire and at the Equestria games again he proves to be a hero, but thats not my point, he plays an important role in the show, Twilight been taking care of him ever since he hatched, he has a throne in the castle, removing him it is like removing one of the 6 mane.

To be honest I feel like the writers could of done a better job of Spike saving the Crystal Empire but it came out a bit anti-climactic.

Spike is a great character but he is a shallow but not too shallow of a character besides he saved the crystal empire, Has a huge crush on Rarity, and is Twilight ~slave~ assistant. I have no reason to hate him but I wish there was more personality to him just like the main six do.

Please tell me I'm not the only one here who likes Spike.

I created this thread to show my support of Spike. I always figured he was a character I like that everyone else seems to hate because he's not written as well as the mane six.

I've seen several people say that they like Spike, and think he has a lot of potential.

I am one of those people.

On topic, I don't think they're gonna write Spike out, since he's a pretty well-established part of the show at this point. I mean, he's been there since the very first episode.

We say that Spike doesn't need to be removed he just needs to be written better. While I do believe that to be the case, what if the writers just don't know how?

Least we forget, they're required to have a male among the main cast for diversity sake, so he's got that. Not to mention useful he's useful for communication (even if that role has shrunk).

Plus, they need someone with hands around.

I agree with that, if he was able to fly would have been a different story.

I understand that he was kind of important to the story and character development of Twilight early in her life, and also in Season 1, but beyond that he's been like a ....seventh wheel?  I think he rarely brings anything redeeming to the show; he really seems like a background character more often than not, and at other times, like a pet or butler to Twilight and her friends.

I think it would be incredibly difficult, if not impossible to write him out of the show smoothly without tons of backlash at this point, however. At the very least though, he is starting to mature just a bit in my eyes; getting better character development and becoming less of a childish punching bag.

I think Spike is sort of a comic relief. I think some episodes with him have been rather bad... really bad.... however, he has had good moments and he is #1 assistant of Twilight. It is kinda a thing now.

Absolutely not. Spike is a great supporting character, and I believe his lackluster standalone episodes are more the fault of the writers than the Spike character. The writers need to follow through with what was said in Power Ponies: Spike is worth a good deal more than simple comedic relief, and needs further development to truly display this.

When has Spike had character development?
