Don't get me wrong, I do like Equestria Girls, but I definitely prefer My Little Pony, if this fandom was reversed and started off as EQG instead of MLP I don't think I would have gotten into it nearly as much as I have now.

As for my favourite character, that one is tough - I wasn't all that much a fan of Sunset in the first one, but she was one of my favourite characters in the second, so I will go with her (but Pony Rarity is still my number 1 gal :D)

I'd probably live with Twilight, all those books to read and seeing all that magic she does would be cool (and she would answer any questions, with insane detail, without thinking about it ^_^)

I have absolutely no shame in saying that I wish nothing but death upon the Equestria Girls franchise. To me, it has done absolutely nothing except:

1. Undermine the mane five's importance by implying that they're wholly replaceable.

2. Simultaneously skyrocket Twilight's importance to the level of "the only main character" rather than "the central character of six mains."

3. Fill the world of FiM with boatloads of insanely idiotic contrivance.

4. Introduce a set of the exact same friends for Twilight, which is utterly pointless and ridiculous.

5. Introduce a poorly-written, cardboard-cutout love interest for her as well, just 'cause.

6. Divert time and resources away from FiM (the lengthy hiatuses only became a thing after Equestria Girls came into existence. Odd coincidence, huh?)

So....uhhh....yeah, I like FiM more. :please:

Bro hoof on this. that being said, for your reason #2, I don't think that's an EQG flaw but rather a flaw of McCarthy's tenure in general. EQG is more a symptom than a reason.

My thoughts on the equestria girl designs (especially the toys) are pretty well known

That being said I've grown to like Eqg, but I prefer the ponies.

On the toys bit: most of them look pretty terrible. About the only EQG toy I've actually enjoyed has been Sunset's Time to shine toy, as I think that's actually a decent bit of innovation and design.

Too bad they don't seem to put any thought into any of the other mane six's toys along that SS toy :(

What do you mean target specifically?

When SS broke up the HuMane Five's friendship at CHS, there was an underlying motivation that she went after them to prevent the EoH from activating in Pedestria despite the pilot stating that no one knew who bore them. The 2013 annual didn't close this issue.

I feel completly cold towards the EQG franchise. I watch the movies once they come out, but i never feel any hype for them. I didn't liked the first movie and i thought that the second one was good, but nothing i would rewatch over and over.

So yeah, FiM is far better and i am rather hyped for the start of the new season.

Also, Sunset Shimmer is overrated. Sorry SS fans. *Pulls over flameshield*

I go for FiM here because it's what built this franchise. FiM is the full package, and the possibilities of the setting was one of the biggest draws of the show. Setting a show in a fantasy world allows you to come up with your own rules, and the structure of Equestria is built in a way in which the morals and messages the show teaches are not only important from a meta perspective, but consequential to the workings of the world. Friendship, an abstract concept in our world, generates an energy that is integral to keeping Equestria safe and functioning.

If it was not for the way Equestria literally depended on it, the Mane 6 would not have become friends in the first place. Consequentially, the Mane 6 in the human world would not have known each other either, and Sunset Shimmer would likely have not redeemed.

The fact is that the world of Equestria Girls is pretty much dependent on Equestria itself to draw its concepts and major characters, and to balance its character dynamics in mold of Equestria's. It would be nothing without the show to set its precedent. The problem with Equestria Girls is that it reduces setting in MLP from a constant to a variable. One of the proven attractions of the original show is replaced, and consequentially, to put it in TV Tropes terms, your mileage may vary.

However, I can understand preference for the human world. At times, Equestria is just too idealistic for some viewers' tastes. Characters are seen being paid back in fair dues for the work they put in and even complex issues like identity crises, self-confidence issues, and even totalitarian control are resolved to a manageable level in less than the space of a day. Most of the main characters are crossing the threshold between potential and achievement. Where the Mane 6 in Equestria are role models, quickly taking on new responsibilities, going on adventures, and making achievements most people in our general age group would envy, the Mane 6 in Equestria Girls still haven't gotten there yet. It's more realistic in that what they're dealing with is more localized to typical high school stuff. While it's a bit disappointing that more of the world itself hasn't been put under a critical lens in the movies as Season 5 has been doing to Equestria lately, to some, it's a bit closer to home and more familiar.

Although I don't find the Equestria Girls world nearly as interesting as Equestria, and its reasons for having been created in the first place certainly don't help it, it seems to have found a place in the franchise as a sort of counterbalance to the idealism and rapid evolution of FiM's main focus.

Honestly, I prefer MLP.

It's much better than Equestria Girls, to me. Equestria Girls was a bit...girly.

Girlier than a show about cute cartoon multi-colored horses, princesses, magic and friendship?

I must have missed the episode where all the characters drank protein shakes, went weight lifting and picked up chicks...

Friendship is Magic gets my vote, but at this point I'm not sure it's the most fair comparison. Friendship is Magic spans over 100 episodes. Equestria Girls is two (soon to be three) short movies. A bit hard to fairly judge something that's been going strong for some time to something that's relatively still new, especially when the latter is on the upscale.

I still maintain that the only major differences lie in the different settings and aesthetics. Friendship is Magic is more appealing to most because of its fantasy setting and animalian characters. Simply put, ponies are cuter than teenage kids. Magical faraway lands are more exciting than high school. Pretty simple.

But Equestria Girls, while flawed in some aspects, still has the same charm and wit, the same lighthearted tone, the same feel and themes, and for the most part, the same quality writing, acting, animation, music, and everything else that makes Friendship is Magic so great. The characters might seem a tad more flanderized perhaps, but I chalk that up to the fact that the EG branch is still in its infancy. The Humane Five (6,7, w/e) are not the exact same characters as their Equestrian counterparts and are simply less developed at this point.

I'm happy to report that I enjoy both very much. :)

I like my little pony more. If I explained why it would take up a whole page. :kindness:

Fluttershy because she's cute and my favorite pony!  :yay:

Also fluttershy because she's my favorite human (?) and also it would take up a whole page. I'll keep it simple and say my ideal girlfriend is exactly like eg fluttershy. More of the shy quiet type.  :squee:

I would say FiM, but it isn't really that fair.

EQG has more time to develop a story (not feeling as rushed as FiM) and it has some good songs.

FiM has more good songs, but shorter storylines. Thing is that it had been worked on for way longer than EQG.

They both have different content to pass on to the viewers. It isn't going to be completely the same (even though you can see how they intertwine [not really too much of a good attempt because it reminds us of Monster High]).

Personally, what I like about EQG is the one-universe-to-another thing.

I will have to agree with the others who have gave links to evidence and whatnot to why others found it to be bad, even though I don't mind a majority of them.

At the end, it still would be something I would watch but it wouldn't replace what I feel about FiM.

In all honesty, I'm not sure if I can answer this question fairly, as they're two different things within the same franchise, each with things that fit and don't fit their respective genres.

If it came down to "if I could only watch one for the rest of my life", though, I'd pick the main show.
