Help with Colours for new OC?

Odyssey

Recommended Posts

So I'm designing a new Pony OC/fancharacter. I've covered all of her personality quirks and am working on her backstory. The problem is however that, as stated in the title, she needs a cutie mark and a colour palette. I tried to think of many ideas for both, but it really isn't easy. That's where you come in. If you have any good cutie mark/colour palette ideas, let me know! Here's an image on what she looks like.

And this is what I kind of want in terms of brightness/shading-wise.

And here are some little bits and pieces about her. Also feel free to use the image above and colour her to give me and idea on what she'll look like. As for the one that's in greystyle, you don't even need to go for that same brightness/shading style. It's just an optional thing, really.

  • Her name is Magnum Opus. It means "great work" in Latin.
  • Magnum Opus is a painter. She likes all forms of art, but especially still-life and street art.
  • Like Fluttershy, she is a late bloomer and has had trouble with what she wanted to be. She got her cutie mark around that age.
  • Magnum loves being a painter and is passionate at what she does, but she can be also be pretty bashful and a little too modest with her work.
  • She is pretty absorbed in her job, however. Since companies put a lot of pressure on her, she almost never has time to meet friends. As a result, she can also come off as a little selfish and greedy.
  • She is born in Canterlot and grew up with a semi-rich family. While her parents are a little controlling, they're not by means bad ponies. They're actually polite once you get to know them. Magnum now lives in Manehattan.
  • When starting as an artist, she used to feel really jealous by how many artists they're are than her. But after a bit of encouragement, she had to get over it as quickly as possible.
  • She is tender-hearted and loves all of her friends, but sometimes can be a little too sappy.
  • Her friends affectionately call her Maggie.
  • Magnum loves fashion and dresses. She also would love to go to the Gala one day.
  • Magnum is an absolute foodie and loves to cook whenever she gets the chance. She eats like a pig, however.
  • Magnum has a great sense of humour and is good at impressions. Most of her taste in humour is sarcasm, however.

Go nuts.

EDIT: I have chosen a cutie mark for Magnum Opus!

How about an eisel with a heart shaped dress being painted on it?

Thanks for your suggestion! Admittedly, what you've explained sounds a little too detailed. I'm aiming for simpler cutie marks, but I will keep the idea of an easel cutie mark in mind. :)

All your loves in one image. I had the same problem but my original idea had 10+ images in it instead of three, at least until the music pointed me in the right direction. Shepherd King of Fire, bat winged pony skull, plus a flaming crown and shepherd's crook. Displays my role as a Leader, a Hero, and my fave band all in one.

Uh yes I'm sorry I just had to try to do something but I think I ruined it >< For some reason, the name Magnum Opus just gave me this image of this super regal pony who's like super fabulous, sort of like the ponies in the gallery with French Sweet & Elite (is that the name of the episode send help). In all honesty, I have no clue what her cutie mark means it just... Seemed to fit? Also, it fit the colour scheme so I just used it as a butt place holder ^^

I hope this points you in the right direction/gives you ideas/tells you what not to do! :D Best of luck, pony colour schemes don't come easy especially when you've invested so much into the written side of them c:

Really sorry for the late response, @MiniKirby123! I totally forgot about this topic. D:

It's funny to say since I chosen Magnum Opus as her name since it does sound regal and sophisticated. Probably a little too regal, but I still like it, haha.

Her cutie mark is brilliant! It matches both her status as a Canterlot citizen and her talent as a painter. I'll definitely be using this cutie mark then. Thank you very much! :D

The colour scheme is nice! Admittedly I do think that the colours could be a little more vivid, but I think I can work something out with this palette, if that's fine.

I would suggest this pallete inspired in colors commonly used in paints of the Renaissaince. As for the cutie mark, I chose a logarithmic spiral; also used frequently amongst painters of said time.

For her coat colour I would do a light minty green with a light pink mane with slightly darker pink streaks that flow through it, hope it help's! :squee:

For some reason, I don't know if it's the way you drew her, but I feel like her coat needs to be some shade of purple. Plus, Purple would go good with the colours of the cutie mark.

Maybe a bluish purple, with bright coloured eyes to really stand out? A Bright yellow would work really well, as it fits with the cutie mark. Then maybe make her mane a more pastel purple with a more pastel yellow.

Or a light purple, with medium blue eyes, and a dark coloured mane with blue or yellow highlights. maybe substitute all the blue in this with red, if you like.

I feel like the colour of her unicorn magic whatever stuff should be yellow, as well.

My goobles! Somehow it didn't give me the mention XD

Sweet! I don't think it's necessarily too royal - you can never be too fancy c: I'm super happy you like the cutie mark -  I just sort of put something together with crowns and stuff! ^^ Feel free to use the butt mark, and fiddle around with the colour scheme as much as you like - in hindsight, it could do with some brighter colours.

Your character is a painter, so I concluded that her coloring would be bright and themed on paints.

The three primary colors of paint are red, blue, and yellow, so against my better judgment, I muscled them all in and made do.

When working with light, however, the primary colors are red, green, and blue, so I thought why not throw green in too; but as it isn't a primary color of paint, I didn't think it was wise to overuse it, so I left it for her irises and eye shadow.

I chose yellow for the body color because it's brighter and I think it's likely her cutie mark will involve a brush, palette, or easel, which are classically mid-dark orange-brown-ish and wouldn't look as good on blue or red.

Thanks for your help, guys. I haven't decided on a palette yet, but I used your ideas to make thirteen potential ones. You can find them in the spoiler below.

@Galaxy,

Well, I have been giving it a small look, to see which one does have a better design for Odyssey's pone senpai, and here it is my vote:

0k73TXN.jpg

Putting this on perspective, this may be my favourite design, being both pleasant to the eye and being an standard of her status. The combination of different shades of blue is something that I loved instantly as soon as I saw it, but the yellow eyes... maybe it's just me, but I don't see them fitting. It may be because of their current design rather than the final color combination, and it is more of a nitpick, so ignore that.

Again, this is a design that stands out for its color combination. Without needing to use complex colors, it shows a regal presence that can be described as "High class" at first sight, without needing to think a lot about it.

But that's muh opinion, so take it as seriously as you want. Again, nice OC you got there! <3

@@Galaxy,

I'm throwing in my two cents again for palette! Personally, I'd have to go with @Lightwing! That design just stuck out to me the best, and I love it - much better than my original one. The eyes and eyeshadow do seem a bit off though - maybe try just flipping the two colours? The gold might look better as an eyeshadow with a couple of tweaks, and that blue is just too pretty to ignore.

Thanks for your input, you guys! I was going to go for the third colour palette of Magnum, but in the end I didn't go for it as it looks too much like Rarity's.

I do have two more palettes for you guys to choose from, however. I really liked the twelfth colour scheme of Magnum, so I decided to fix up a few things from it. For the longest time, I've always imangined her with a pinkish-red mane, but I couldn't find another nice colour to go along with it. Yet at the same time, I'm also worried if this colour palette puts her into one of those red/black OCs, so I made her mane blue as you can see below.

Tell me which one you like better! Once that's sone, Magnum's design will be finally finished!

I also have an OC named Magnum Opus, so take from this what you will, but I think this name feels a bit too much like a boy's name. :o "Magnum" itself is a boy's name irl, and the suffix "us"  from "Opus" is masculine (Greek), so maybe a slight change could be beneficial? I dunno.

Since she's an artist, I'd suggest a white body (like a blank canvas), then bright hair. Maybe orange, or peach with pink. Her eyes would look nice green, to complement the warmer shades.

Artsy cutie marks tend to be repetitive---paintbrushes, pencils, etc, but there's nothing wrong with that so long as you add a personal touch to it, like how Babs's cutie mark was a pair of scissors, but was also an apple to reflect her family/upbringing.
