"Amending Fences" question

Recommended Posts

"When I was young I was too busy to make any friends.

Such silliness did not seem worth the effort it expends."

MLP theme song

"My dear Twilight, there is more to a young pony's life than studying, so I'm sending you to supervise the preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration in this year's location: Ponyville. And, I have an even more essential task for you to complete: make some friends!"

Celestia's letter

So, my question is simple:

What the heck is going on in that episode? It was clearly stated that Twilight did not have any friends until she went to Ponyville. From what hole did those offended friends creep out? Why Twilight feels so guilty for missing the party, if it wasn't a party of a friend? I have no sinlge idea about anything in that episode. Just doesn't make any sense.

Please, anyone, explain it to me. I was thinking about it since this episode aired, and I need to know.

Thanks.

Perhaps it just meant she didn't have any close friends? I mean we all have acquaintances that we consider "friends" even though we probably seldom talk to them.

Then why she was upset about missing a birthday? Why did she literally jumped out of her skin to make up to Moondancer? I don't think anyone would've even bothered to apologise to their acquaintances for that.

Maybe the show creators are just retconing the whole "didn't have any friends" thing?

I see it as she had friends, but she did not really appreciate them, until she got to Ponyville then realized what friendship could be. Hey, just like the theme song! :D  So she basically neglected her friends in Canterlot, and was sent to make new friends in Ponyville, where she could see the magic of friendship first hand, or first hoof I suppose.

Then it has no sense. I thought that the show teaches not to leave your friends, but this episode shows that the Princess of Friendship herself left her friends? Then what we can expect from others, if the Friendship made flesh doesn't give a flying feather about basic values of friendship?

Note that in Episode 1 one of the Amending Fences group said something like "Honestly, I think that pony is more interested in studying than in making friends". That sounds like they didn't consider themselves her friends.

I agree with some of the posts above...I think it was a matter of Twi not appreciating friends at first, learning about how wonderful friendship is, and then realizing how she treated the ponies back in Canterlot who were reaching out to her and wanted to be better friends with her. Doesn't she even make that super-remorseful apology to them in Donut Joe's cafe?

Same goes for the birthday party, I think Twilight saw the situation, had a "what have I done" moment and tried to fix it.

She doesn't deserve to spread the magic of friendship, if she doesn't value it, then.

Same as some above: She had friends, but did not realize how important it was, and kinda gave them the cold shoulder at a whim. After being in ponyville she truly understood how important friendship was and then realized how she had been so mistaken. She then went to rectify this error of hers. That is what the episode is about. I mean, its even in the title "A mending fences", she is trying to mend something she had broken awhile back, her (although not fully realized) friendships from her days in Canterlot.

It just strikes close to home. I was abandoned by many friends in the past, so I thought that ponies, who actually teach us about friendship, won't do that. So, I was mistaken or what? Did she leave because the order of the Princess to prepare everything for Summer Celebration? Or because she figured out that Nightmare Moon will come back and wanted to do something about it? Or because she was ordered to make friends? If so, why Celestia didn't order her to make friends with Moondancer and the others? Did she think about them as friends?

I've got a lot of questions, and I don't know if someone is able to answer them.

"Amending Fences" is my favorite episode, so maybe I can help. It's as simple as Moondancer considering Twilight a friend, but Twilight not really thinking twice about MoonDancer. So, when Twilight realized how important she was to Moondancer, she felt terrible about what she did to her and wanted to make it up to her. Also, Princess Celestia was never clear about who to make friends with, she just simply said "make some friends." She never told Twilight whether she should make new friends in Ponyville or work on her relationships in Canterlot. Hope this helped!

I think the point of her being the element of Magic and spreading the magic of friendship was supposed to be her having a Eureka moment and then learning about friendship from then on, after experiencing the other elements in the pilot episode.

I don't think it's so much about Twi understanding friendship from the start as it is it being about Twi being "chosen" to go on adventures to learn about it.

She had friends but she was not a good friend to them nor did she really understand friendship. It is pretty obvious in the episode that she wasn't their friend considering she didn't even remember their names but she felt bad because she feels like she should have been a better friend and seeing that she is the Princess of Friendship she felt that she should make things right.

Twilight Sparkle was blind to the friends she had in Canterlot. Celestia made her have a change of scenery and start fresh.

Yup. It was pretty clear to me.

There is an old saying "would you learn to drop the bottle from a man who has never had a drop?" What that means is that Twilight has made MANY mistakes regarding friendship even after knowing better. It shows she's human (relatively speaking). Would you want to learn friendship from this perfect bastion of never does any wrong, ever? No. Other people can not relate to someone who has lived a flawless and perfect life. Twilight did not, so it makes her message about friendship all that much more special to the people she spreads it to.

It just strikes close to home. I was abandoned by many friends in the past, so I thought that ponies, who actually teach us about friendship, won't do that.

That's not what the show is saying. It's saying that people can change for the better and people make mistakes. Twilight learned from her mistakes and wanted to make amends.

If so, why Celestia didn't order her to make friends with Moondancer and the others? Did she think about them as friends?

Distractions. It was quite clear that with the huge library, the ready access to schooling, books and all the things that the city had to offer, Twilight had too much going on in Canterlot to where she was neglecting her friends. Celestia even said BEFORE she sent her to Ponyville to go and make some friends, but she never listened. Thus why Celestia eventually realized after Twilight MADE friends in Ponyville that it was the best place for her. Away from the impersonal experience of the city and in the small town hospitality setting. I mean it's not unlike real life. The stereotype of cities are that people are always busy and mind their own business. Most people won't even talk to you on the street.

Yeah, I guess I understood, that this episode proved that friendship and trust in Equestria worths less than a snowball during the snowy winter.

Not true! It's stressing the importance of learning from your mistakes and trying to make things right. If anything, Twilight had to expose weakness to make things correct. When you apologize to someone you're in a position of weakness, you're making yourself vulnerable to them even though they are mad at you. You're showing that you care.

Yes, I'd love to learn about it from the perfect society which is what Equestria supposed to be. I make a lot of mistakes on my own, I want to see how to make things right, not how to fix mistakes.

The show is saying that even the princess of friendship will abandon you.

I don't think Twilight really spent as much time as she should have been with her old friends, because she didn't know what the real meaning of friendship was at the time. That's why Celestia said to go and meet some REAL friends. After Twilight looked back, she realised she hadn't had treated them like real friends, so she went to amend the fence between her and her friends. That's my view on it.
