Nero watched Rome fall and did nothing but make it worse. He murdered his brother, slept with his mother and generally screwed up everything.

Nero was the one the first to persecute Christians, he did this very brutally and constantly. He used the burning bodies as a light source for his mansion.

It was said by Suetonius and Cassius Dio that Nero sang the "Sack of IIum" in stage costume while the city burned. Popular legend claims that Nero played the fiddle at the time of the fire, an anachrism based merely on the concept of the lyre, a stringed instrument associated with Nero and his performances. (There were no fiddles in 1st-century Rome.) Tacitus's account, however, has Nero in Antium at the time of the fire.Tacitus also said that Nero playing his lyre and singing while the city burned was only rumor.

Well the rest of the world was becoming mad at nero for his crimes and itallian senate sentenced him to death. after hearing of this Nero promptly killed himself outside of Rome.

Umm yeah sorry I tend to go on history rants sometimes... uhh anyway yes he was an awful awful man.

He also kinda looks like mark cuban....

Dude..... They get way worst the more we talk about them.

Those crazy Romans!

Check out Elgabalus/Heliogabalus too! So decadent and depraved he was assassinated while he was just 18 years old! Although you might be interested to know he officially replaced Jupiter, the head of the Roman gods, with Sol Invictus (the sun god - sounds like anypony we know?)

While on the subject of Roman deprivity and decadence, I would also like to point out Crassius, I think it was, might be named something else. The head of the private firefighting agency who was the richest man in Rome. He burned houses, showed up, offered to buy them at a low cost or watch them burn. Also the great poet Catullus, who wrote the most vulgar work in the history of poetry and writing. But yeah, Rome was full of these types. Elagabalus was bad too, he was an insane transgender emperor who asked a doctor to put female genitals on him somewhere, anywhere.

Are we better? In my opinion they were just horrible by looking at these 3 like really!

That's just...… wrong!

This thread has lead me to conclude that I love humanity. Never was human greatness more plainly put in front of my eyes, and I am in sheer awe. I commend all you Romans.

How do people like this even get into positions of power? This makes absolutely no sense. ._.

Yeah Nero, he was pretty evil. I reckon he wasn't as bad as Gaius (Caligula) though. And there were others, like Crassius too. Caligula was a total monster of Rome though, invading the sea, making a horse a consul, sleeping with both his sisters, laughing at the thought of killing senators in front of them and declaring himselfs the god Joves brother? Not to mention all the killing he did, sometimes his own family no less...

Yeah, that screams of evilness and insanity to me. Theres a reason he was killed by his own praetorian guards.

A random side note that has no relevance-I was reading this reply, and the first word to jump out at me was "praetorian guard". I must play too much RTW. http://mlpforums.com/public/style_emoticons/default/dry.png

Sense is not a factor. A child was the president of the USA for 2 terms and Italy had a pimp as leader for a long time. All it takes to obtain power is a little pizazz and a healthy dose of attacks and/or oppression.

Well Nero was adopted by his uncle Claudius to become his heir. He died in 54 and Nero, taking the name Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, was established as Emperor. Though accounts vary, many ancient historians state Claudius's wife poisoned Claudius.

I'll go by the "I, Claudius" and "Claudius the God" note and say that it was a plot by Claudius, putting Nero as leader because he would do so badly they would have to re-establish the republic.

Long story short, it didn't work. Of course this is just a theory, but Robert Graves was very, very learned on this subject.

With all this talk of evil Romans, we have to remember some Romans were heroic, fair and good. Like Julius Caeser, Augustus, Fabius Maximus, Scipio Africanus, Cato, Catullus, Marcus Aurellius, Constantine, Germanicus and many others. So they weren't all insane bad people.

As to how these people got into power, political assasinations, brought titles, being born into royally. Hell, some of them even brought the title of emperor, from the last one assassins, no less! That whole thing about the praetorian guards killing who they think of as a poor emperor, it actually happened alot. And many, many, many leaders were poisoned, sometimes by their own family members.

Well the topic is about Nero but I'll change the name to Roman Leaders after this post.

Was Juliius good to you? I personally love him and his crossing of the Rubicon. I would've done the same.

He was quite kind to those he conquered. Going against the Rubicon with his forces was very heroic and brave. Very valiant man. His conquests in Gaul make excellent reading, especially with his toed horse (or was it a mule?) and all. Thanks to him I would say we partly have modern day Britain and France. He truly was a great hero of the republic. And the things he said were often very smart. A competent commander and a great dictator. Better than Marcus Antonius and Pompeius In my eyes, he will always be a great model for what a man should be. Valiant, strong, cool-headed, well-spoken and determined. Did you know when he died he took great measures to make sure his clothes were held up for when he collapsed? Thats what I call modesty. Plus he was apparently extremely calm throughout the ordeal, or so they say And when Pompeius (was it Pompeius?) killed himself, he said he would have spared him, good dark humoured chap he was. Of course, not everyone would agree. (I'm looking at you, Brutus and the senate.)

Although I personally think Fabius Maximus, Cunctator was the true hero of the republic.
