Is the fantasy of FiM becoming extinct? Has FiM become My Little Pony Tales

One of the initial appeals of the show was how fantasy elements and applicable messages were worked into common slice-of-life plots. That's why, out of all of the shows airing at the same time the fandom first appeared that also had morals and common plots for kids' cartoons, this is the one that managed to attract a lot of attention. With that said, the main focus of the show never was the adventure and worldbuilding; it was the messages and character development that came from it. It's more a means than an end.

 

I don't see any reduction in the amount of episodes that take full advantage of the show's fantasy elements now compared to Season 1. Some do, and the ones that don't play a more straightforward interpretation of the plot that relies more on the strength of the characters.

Now that you mention it, S1 had a noticeable amount of adventure and fantasy compared to later seasons, which were heavily focused on SoL and keeping the fantasy in said settings. Adventure is now mostly kept for premieres and finales. I wouldn't say it affecting negatively the show, in fact, I believe most of SoL episodes these seasons are superior to the ones in precious ones.

From what I know of MLP Tales, which are horses in a middle school setting without magic (as far as I know), I think is silly comparing it to FiM, as magic and fantasy is adapted to the SoL setting

 

what I was saying was Pony Tales was all SoL. Which is why I compared it to FiM. I sure, there's bits of fantasy in the bookend seadon episodes, but not enough compared to gen 1, where every week, ponies would adventure to someplace and meet something other than a pony. They rarely ever focused on keeping to themselves in their castle playset in Ponyland.

Think of how much of Equestria we haven't seen yet.

gen 1 ponies, always having adventures and getting out to meet other creatures every week would've covered all of Equestria, 5 years in, already.

I feel like after seasons 1 and 2, everything began to feel so boxed in like there isn't much more to see of it. Maybe it's because the animation and characters were began to wear out on me. I used to love these characters now they're meh.

we don't even know much about all the fantasy stuff they've put into the world. How much do we know about Zebras? The Crystal Empire? Hell, how much do we know on the lore or origins of the flippin Tree of Harmony? Of Alicorns? Of Starswirl? How much do w know on dragon, or Manticores? Sea serpents? Diamond Dogs? Dracoequiseseses? Well I would hardly say that a cartoon about the magical adventures of talking ponies and a dragon is lacking fantasy elements.

Damn right. Season 4's finale blew my mind in a lot of ways. Season 5's sounds even better. This show can't possibly get any better, can it? ...CAN IT!? O_O

I like the idea of "magical electricity" because it's closer to the original renaissance/Victorian feel I got from the cartoon in the beginning. But I don't think that modern cities and "magical electricity" are mutually exclusive (other than the aesthetic presentation). You?

 

Sorry to take so long to respond---and no, I don't think they're mutually exclusive, but I'd always figured that each item that looks electrical had its own magic inside it to power it, not that everything was connected to a central power source like our power grids worked.

 

Then again, that's not something they've addressed in the show...they certainly could, and they could make plots out of things like blackouts or objects running out of magic all at the same time or things like that...!

I think it's a good mixture. I like their SOL and their adventure stories, unlike G1 where I loved the flutter ponies and seaponies and the villains and all things magical. When it changed to G1.5 I HATED it (though not as much as the following generations prior to FiM) It was boring and lost the magic that drew me to MLP in the first place. (I was a little girl/the targeted demographic at the time it first aired if you're wondering). The SOL episodes in FiM are much funnier, and have better music and more fleshed out characters so it's not the same.

That's been on my mind recently too.

 

Personally, I think what happened with Gen 1 is happening with FiM and they've removed a lot of the magic & monsters to grow up with its audience.

 

Those little girls aren't so little anymore, so it's about time to move on from fairytales & fantasy to more common, grounded issues (though the finale showed they'll still go there when they have to!)

Yeah, the adventure aspect has cut down since Season 1 and 2.

 

Rarity episodes where she has to go out with other Ponies to look for materials she couldn't get on the market. Return of the Diamond Dogs.
