Why do you call yourself a brony?

Titan Rising

Recommended Posts

Hi, this is my first post. I was wondering why everyone calls themselves "brony" or "pegasister". Is there a reason for this?

Why can't people just watch the cartoon because it's a cartoon? Why does age and gender have to constantly be something that's brought up? I think a lot of people do it as a "I watch MLP as an adult male and I'm proud" type of thing but honestly I think it does more harm than good, especially when near every MLP video on youtube is riddled with some pretty awful comments

Can anyone shed some light on the subject for me and explain why you call yourself a brony/pegasister?

Welcome to the forum! I'm kinda new here myself. :)

Anyways, the term "brony" refers to, simply one who watches the show passionately and are a part of their infitely-sized fanbase. People like you, me, and others watch it because it emits positive, happy sensations when you watch it (I personally think it feels like physical rainbows or something lol ^^).

I personally watch it because of the fact that this could be the beginning of a revolutionsl turn-around era for the cartoon industry. In my opinon, the cartoons of today (besides MLP of course) are low-quality, uncreative, and just not worth watching anymore. But with FiM, we have something we can watch again and immerse in the nostalgia! :D

I call myself a brony because that's what fans of MLP:FIM are called?

HA, you might think that's the only reason to call yourself a brony, but you know why I do?

I call myself a brony because it's the studliest, most masculine label out there!!! B)

I call myself a brony because everyone else in this fandom is.

I'd much rather be a "Pinkie Pie Crusader" but I fear that to be too unique :3

Also, the term brony comes from something that has to do with where it all started on 4chan. The term coming from "bro" is an incorrect fact. So technically, I think "brony" refers to fans both male and female.

First thing first, welcome to the forum! :P

Personally I won't call myself a Brony, I'm nothing but a MLP enthusiast, that's all

But it seems a lot of people in this fandom regarded the entire mlp:fim thing as a religion, calling themselves brony and be proud to announce it to anyone who cares to listen

You don't have to call yourself a brony to enjoy ponies! :P

I call myself a brony because that is what the internet has named me. I googled the word brony and I fit the description.

I'm not afraid to talk about ponies in public, I grow more comfortable with the topic everyday. But I don't expect anyone else to understand or watch the show. I just act like its no big deal and if they want to go check it out that's none of my business.

It is, it is! :) Even better, the creator happened to be none other than Mrs. Lauren Faust, who had major interaction with two of my childhood shows, The PowerPuff Girls, and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Both have quality that is MLP-tier.

Yea! Lauren Faust is the best! I wonder what would happen if she teamed up with the creators of Grim adventures of Billy and Mandy and Ed, Edd n Eddy for Season 3... on second thought maybe that might not be the best move haha

This is kinda how I feel about it, I love the show and cartoons and general and I just don't see the need to label myself as something just to say its a good show - much less a label that brings gender and stuff into it

Lauren unfortunately moved on at the beginning of Season 2... :,( She's currently working on new projects.

Anyways, I'm most shocked though from the fact that the show has gotten progressively better, plus the S2 finale to top it all off. :o

I believe she is still a consultant for the show or something of that nature, is that correct? I hope so, someone of her knowledgefulness needs to be keeping an eye on things to maintain quality control!

That said, if she didn't have anything to do with the quality of the finale then I'm glad they picked someone great to take her place

I'm a "Bro" (adult male) and I love "Ponies"

And I'm using the name because we are deviant, and by general courtesy, deviants tend to carry titles.

I just don't see how acknowledging yourself as a deviant actually helps anything though. By calling yourself a brony you are not only acknowledging that it isn't normal for an adult male to watch a cartoon that society deems "for young girls" but you are also acknowledging that it is indeed a cartoon for young girls because you are verifying that age/gender discrepancy.

My point is, I would think it would be more beneficial for everyone if tons of people just watched the show and viewed it as a good cartoon rather than a good [little girls] cartoon. If the objective is to break down social barriers wouldn't it be more effective to stop labeling ourselves with respect to our age and gender and simply recognize the cartoon for its greatness as a cartoon???

Sorry for going all sociological on this lol

I really don't call myself a brony... I just tell people I like MLP:FIM, brony is kind of a "blanket" label to me.

I HAD TO FALL TO LOSE IT ALL BUT IN THE END IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER /WRISTS

I call myself a brony because I'm so much more passionate about the show than just "Yeah, I like the show".

I feel like it has become a part of me.

Everything I have has to be pony-themed, I have tons of pony music and art on my iPod. Even my bedroom wall above my bed is decked out with pony pictures.

I feel dedicated to the show, and I feel like that kind of dedication sort of requires a special term to go with it. I call myself a brony because "fan" just isn't enough.

I call myself a brony because Its one of, if not, my favorite show of all time. Most cartoons aren't that good nowadays, and plus, MLP has a great fanbase with talented artists. Proud to be in the community.

I think I understand where you are coming from, but it seems you are looking at it from a, "We need to try and make it seem more normal", perspective which I don't agree with.

"I just don't see how acknowledging yourself as a deviant actually helps anything though."

Deviant is a term used by an individual or group to label another person or group does as inappropriate or unnatural. I could call anyone a deviant if I believe what they do is inappropriate or unnatural. If someone sees bronies as deviants changing what you phrase yourself won't make any difference. They will still see you as a deviant but with a different name.

"By calling yourself a brony you are not only acknowledging that it isn't normal for an adult male to watch a cartoon that society deems "for young girls" but you are also acknowledging that it is indeed a cartoon for young girls because you are verifying that age/gender discrepancy."

I believe it best to acknowledge both of those aspects. If we didn't acknowledge them then we could be deemed ignorant for choosing to ignore what the show actually is. We shouldn't have to explain ourselves for what we like or try and make it more socially acceptable. It would be nice if society understood us better, but I don't need their approval to be myself.

"If the objective is to break down social barriers wouldn't it be more effective to stop labeling ourselves with respect to our age and gender and simply recognize the cartoon for its greatness as a cartoon???"

I think most MLP watchers would agree that breaking social barriers is more of a side effect rather than our objective. Even if it wasn't socially abnormal to watch it, I would still like the show.

Let me put your logic in another situation: Feminism. Should they not label themselves as women because some people view women as inferior creatures(I personally do not believe women to be inferior) and that label would work against them? By labeling ourselves, we can work to make that label stand in a positive light. If we were to be a mass of individuals who watch MLP, people wouldn't think it any less strange. By using the label "Brony" we can work to show that even though our community may have an odd interest, we are good people that value and cherish love, kindness, generosity, tolerance, loyalty, honesty, and making people happy. Our societies need these qualities and people who uphold and understand their true values.

I am sorry if I came off a bit rough. I became a little irritated as I thought about how people are so quick to judge others.

So i can tell people with no internet experince that I'm a brony and they have no idea what it means :3

Really only because everybody else does. If someone decided to call us "FiM Fanatics" I probably would too just so I could be identified as part of the community.
