Fighting systems for video games

A topic made for discussing gaming combat systems and sharing tips and tricks about them for both gamers and (potential) developers.

Let's start with; Which game's combat is your favorite?

Mine are both KoA: Reckoning and it's inspiration, the 3D series of The Legend of Zelda. Both systems allow you to vary your loadout and Reckoning's system even rewards you for your effort.

What exactly do you mean by combat system?

There are a lot of things to take in to account before answering this :P

Or I could just go ahead and say what game's fighting mechanics I enjoy and why.

The phase when you're fighting your enemies, and your 3rd already has the answer .

I shall change the topic title to be more clear.

I particularly enjoy the mechanics of Super Smash Brothers. It's pretty deep, and there are so many things to take in account. :twi:

I'm pretty bad at the game myself, but I enjoy the mechanics anyway. :adorkable:

My favorite single-player mechanics have to go to CrossCode. It's a not well known game, and it's still early in development, but I enjoy this game sooooooooo much. It's just toooo good.

It's just sooo... smooth..

Or something.

Love to see the fast-paced combat style. Is the game coming on GOG, Steam, XBLA or Eshop?

Pretty much anythinf Platinum, the typical easy to learn/difficult to master fighting style, but when you master it, it can be oh-so satisfying. It's also great if you want ridiculous, over-the-top action, which is right up my alley

It's on Steam right now. It's still in early access, but I love playing it anyway.

Right now they're working on their third area. They've already got 2 areas plus one temple.

It's also surprisingly bug-free. I only know of two exploits. :toldya:

You can do extended jumps which allow you to access certain secret areas easier, and you can slightly increase your melee DPS with a certain button-mashing technique. :icwudt:

I particularly enjoy the mechanics of Super Smash Brothers.

I'll second that.  Smash Bros. games somehow manage to combine tournament fighting with platforming with crazy, and they do it in a way that actually works.

The combo system from Killer Instinct is what makes it one of my favorite tournament fighter series.  While a button masher would probably fare well enough (my friend used to successfuly button mash with Cinder in the SNES game - made me hate Cinder xD), learning the fairly straightforward combo mechanics will allow you to consistently perform long combos with relative ease.  I honestly had a SNES Fulgore combo memorized for over a decade.

I've always liked how combat was handled in grid and turn-based strategy games such as Final Fantasy Tactics.  It feels as though you're moving the characters around a giant chessboard.  There are turn-based roguelikes like Shiren the Wanderer and [Pokemon] Mystery Dungeon whose movement and combat elicit the same feeling, but they flow more smoothly and quickly.

(I honestly don't think I've played enough video games, but here goes nothing..)

Some of my favorite systems are Yandere Simulator and Undertale.

Undertale: While it is similar to some RPG battle systems, it's pretty unique, as you have the mercy option and can talk to the enemy.

Yandere Simulator: This is more of the up and coming system. Your attack time increases depending on your level of sanity. It gives a much better sense of realism and adds challenge to the game.

I gotta say that Virtua Fighter 5 might have my favorite fighting engine ever. It is fluid, deep, and all characters have real fighting styles. It is one of those things that is easy to get into but learning the characters and their moves and chaining them together feels oh so satisfying.

I like combat systems that allow for player choice in how they want to engage the enemy. Something like the Fallout games, which allow me to forgo guns entirely and project my IRL martial arts training into a fantasy of high kicking, sword swinging, fun. While someone else might be a dedicated sniper, a quick draw lawman/outlaw, techno-wizard, etc.

I also like beat 'em up games, not so much a lot of spectacle fighters but games that stick you in a small clearing with a bunch of burly brutes and slippery throat slitters and they're actually supposed to be a threat. Sadly, the amount of games that do such, like Remember Me or Sleeping Dogs are outnumbered by the God of Wars and Metal Gear Risings. (Which, to be clear, I'm not ragging on as I consider both fun.)

I don't have a particulary favorite one. I can play almost every system, from Smash Bros. to Virtua Fighter.

I think i could say the one in Street Fighter, because that's the one i am familiar with the most. :P

Batman: Arkham games has a fighting style that I instantly fell in love with since I first played Arkham City, fluid and responsive with a variety of moves that only Batman could pull off. If you haven't tried one of the games at all, you should!
