general media What really is worthy to be called news?

Assaults, terrorist attacks, unfortunate accidents that leave someone dead or injured, animal abuse cases, stuff like this is news worthy, tragic and depressing as they may be.

But things like "omg, Beyonce snezed on stage! She is human!" Absolutely should not be in the news. Because why?

I sneezed yesterday. I'm not on tv.

What things should qualify as news-worthy to you guys?

Anything worthwhile would usually be:

- Anything world changing

- Terrorist attacks/natural disasters

- Corruption/scandals

- New cures/treatments

- Civil rights movements

- revolutions

- Local/major leader figures being appointed or stepping down

- Scientific discoveries

- Major figure dies(yes this includes celebrities)

- New tech that's interesting(yes this would include gaming imo)

- something that challenges the way we live

Pretty sure I'm missing some, but basically anything that might have an effect on something, and not something that doesn't matter. Case in point, I don't give 80 billion fucks about what Justin Bieber is wearing or who Taylor Swift is dating. Stop wasting time on that shit

Crime and public safety alerts, politics, community affairs, and business/tech are tier 1 news to me. Then investigations, sports, entertainment, and human interest stories are tier 2. All in that exact order of priority, from most important to least important.

Prioritization is essential. Local news channels (all of them network O&Os where I live) have done an amazing job diluting the term "breaking news", especially using it on sports news or entertainment news.

My favorite local news outlet, which is the closest to following this structure, is NY1, which I unfortunately watch rarely because I don't have Time Warner. It's a format that's been so successful that it was exported to other metro areas like the Carolinas (as News 14), Orlando/Central Florida (as News 13), and Tampa Bay (as Bay News 9). Unfortunately, it hasn't caught on with other cable operators or OTA subchannels as much, with News 12 and FiOS1 being deployed in limited volumes.

Entertainment news can't be, "we spotted XXX doing YYY at ZZZ today". That's for checkout line magazines. I'm only interested if it affects the person's ability to do their job.

News is actually split into two types, hard and soft. Not sure why they use this terminology but its there. Hard news is

Assaults, terrorist attacks, unfortunate accidents that leave someone dead or injured, animal abuse cases, stuff like this is news worthy, tragic and depressing as they may be.

And soft news is...

"omg, Beyonce sneezed on stage! She is human!"

I personally think that soft news should be even classified as news, as its simply not needed. Like if this guy was a HUGE fan of Beyonce, then he would have figured out already that she sneezed on stage via some other source, he ain't gonna be scanning the news for it lol.
