(Rant) The Pokémon series need to change

Incoming rant!

It's 20 years and 7 generations ago since the first Pokémon games arrived and they still haven't evolved in terms of gameplay and other stuff. The same story, same combat phase and same stuff once again and I'm getting tired of it.

In all the years I've seen RPG's outside of of pokémon evolving in different terms. Look at Deus Ex's multiple choices you can make, and even KoA: Reckoning's combat system put other RPG's combat systems in shame. But you, Game Freak, you're still stuck in the outdated gameplay from the first generation and could risk the same faith as FFXIII. Luckily Square Enix learned from it's mistakes and decided to change with FFXV, and so should you.

Here a list of some changes I want to see.

  1. A new combat phase. I expect one where you can move the Pokémon and use different attack options to make combos and with both normal and elemental moves. Watch Reckoning's combat system for more inspiration.
  2. Stop making useless Pokémon and balance the stats. Nobody likes it when their favorite Pokémon is complete shit in battle.
  3. Give the player enough freedom, add character creation and don't do hand-holding. If the player chooses to not follow the main quest and want to do other stuff, let him/her be. Also allow sidequests and even the ability to join the villains and face the consequences of his/her choice.
  4. Add co-op. That's something I want for a long time and still not featured in the official games.
  5. Let the wild Pokémon grow with the level of your Pokémon. No more long and boring grinding by fighting against low-levels.
  6. And this: http://www.dorkly.com/post/49023/8-things-to-change-in-pokemon-to-make-it-exciting-for-andrew-bridgman-again. I agree with most of the things he suggested.

I hope that one day Game Freak is going to change the formula for the better. If not, I won't be surprised when a competitor is going to make a spiritual successor with modernized gameplay. For the rest I'll pass Sun and Moon just like I passed Black and White and X and Y. The series really need to evolve to be interesting again.

Rant ended. You can leave the vault now.

If I could play pokemon like playing them in the smash bros. series I'd be much more interested in it. Not running into random pokemon every 5 feet and having to defeat them would be a plus. Also side-quests. Maybe actual non-pokemon characters that aren't just there because they need to be, but that's just an extra.

In response to the list:

1. YES

2. That's based on opinion. Not everyone focuses on battle. I love my Wigglytuff to death and never use it for fighting.

3. It's gonna be a long time before they do that. From a marketing position, the same formula is still making oodles of money. Once it stops being profitable, they'll change it up.

4. That'd be fun, but same as reason response 3.

5. This is a good idea, but that would also make it difficult to handle when you capture a new low-level pokemon.

6. I agree with most of the stuff in the article, except the garbage pokemon concept. Once again, that's opinion. Some people like those pokemon that are not considered 'battle-worthy'.

You know what I want? A pokemon game that doesn't end around level 60, despite being able to reach level 100. Also, trainers that get stronger in a reasonable way. Normal games, you can plow through 15 trainers without stopping at a pokemon center. However, in fan games like Omicron, the trainers stay hella strong and I find myself retreating every 3 battles.

Okay, I agree Pokemon needs to make some changes, but If we change EVERYTHING, it's not going to feel like pokemon. Pokemon has one main goal: Become the champion. There are some other things on the side, like stopping the villains and tracking down legendaries. However, I do agree with a few things you said. Changing up the battles some would do it some good. I haven't gotten tired of the current system, but changing it would be refreshing nonetheless. Character creation is slowly being implemented and as I said above there are other things to do besides become champion (throughout all the games there have been other small things as well). However, the main goal of the game is still becoming champion. Erasing that would take away from the overall gameplay and reduce the quality of the game. The villain thing though would be very difficult to input and doesn't seem as though it would be all that fun (unless you're suggesting the villains succeed). Co-op I don't any idea how it would work. I don't think wild pokemon should grow, just that wild pokemon can have higher levels. The favorite pokemon thing is just eh. there are over 700 pokemon. It would take a long time to get everything balanced. As for the article, the only thing I agree with is the HM thing (surf and fly are actually pretty good though). The starter types shouldn't change, and they really don't have to. One of the largest parts of pokemon is your starter, so just taking away what that is isn't a good idea. And the random encounters thing is stupid, it's really easy to get around and such. Just let the animation play and flee. That'll be all.

Well Apparently my friends saw these changes on the list, here's what is gonna happen in these reponses

1. It's not gonna happen. Everything is turn-based nothing else. Normal and Pokemon Moves are for pokemon mystery dungeon only.

2. Some people are competitive, Having useless pokemon like magikarp makes the game less fun and Some people like to use their favorite pokemon for either for competitive battles or fun. There are some pokemon that you're forced to use including HM slaves.

3. That's what customizations are for, but that's not gonna happen as well. There are roadblocks, detours, and optional stories in the games. Joining sides isn't gonna happen.

4. That's what Online Team Battles are for, but if you're playing multi-battle with your friend and against 2 other people or, you have to cooperate with each other and not to mention true double battle that happened in emerald version. If in battle faculty, that's fine.

5. Not gonna happen. There are trades needed in terms of having extra pokemon that we don't want or use. For grinding matters, that's what blissey and audino are for. HM slaves, that's what they're for

and 6. No random encounters is what repels are for, but it's based on the leading pokemon's level in the party and the number of steps needed before repel expires. New starter types, not gonna happen and it will not make sense at all, and HMs have to be applied otherwise it's useless in field and battle. There's no pokemon that can learn HMs by level and have to be applied throughout the game including using the HM moves in competitive battles.

Sorry, but some changes will not apply.

Sorry, but some changes will not apply.

That's what I'm afraid for. I really wanted to see an updated Pokémon game to be interesting again.

Then I have no other choice than to put my faith in a dev who takes the feedback serious and does something about it.

I would actually enjoy seeing some more sidequests in the pokemon games and more balanced stats.

Besides that I would like to see a story with the same kind of effort put into like that in BW as well as better post game content.

That's why.

as well as better post game content.

Pokemon Gold and Silver had post game content, but where kinda gone in the generation, Just like the moving sprites in Crystal and the ability to let your Pokémon follow you in the Gold and Silver remakes.

Game Freak has a strange habit of adding new things and removing it in the next generation of games. Maybe it's a bit over now, but I still doubt.

They'll say the same thing as I said if you e-mail the suggestions about the changes to the company, but to add another reason to number 5 was that a lot of people tend to do EV train their pokemon regardless if they use S.T or not.

See, there are ways to make the game a little better. Even if Gamefreak won't make the changes, it's still fun to talk about.

Now, Pokemon Omicron is a fangame that was made through RPG maker. They made quite a few changes to the core of the game that were nice (like allowing you to catch 600+ pokemon in one singular game, including many gen 6 pokemon), but the biggest thing that they changed was that they added in HM items. Stuff like where the move 'rock climb' had an item alternative called 'climbing gear' or 'rock smash' had the alt called 'jackhammer'. This allowed me to run over to that one guy that allowed me to remove the HM moves and actually teach them moves that matter.

To be honest, stuff like this made the game far more enjoyable to play, because now, I didn't HAVE to have an HM slave. I don't HAVE to have my favorite pokemon know some useless move. And reasons like these are arguably part of why I haven't purchased a game since Gold and Silver.

Also, Omicron had a MUCH better storyline that actually spans 70+ hours.

I'd like to be able to have 2 characters instead of just one, visual pokemon encounters instead of random unseen ones every few steps (especially in caves), and the ability to join Team Rocket.

And being allowed to pick the type of starting pokemon instead of the usual 3. I like dark and ice types.

Pokemon needs multiple save files.

I do believe that the exception was pokepark 1 and 2 and Original Pokemon Rumble. Everything else is 1-file only otherwise it wouldn't make sense about that. Pokemon Puzzle League is profile only. you can create multiple save files for Pokemon Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness, but you need more than 1-2 memory cards if a save file exists in the memory card also not to mention how big the blocks are.

Even if you guys try to suggest to make the pokemon games better by making changes, it's still not gonna happen. This is nintendo and pokemon company that creates the pokemon games we're talking about even if you try to e-mail them with suggestions about the changes, they'll say the same thing as I told you guys. Pokemon Fan Made games are exception, but not the main and spin-off games.
